9 additional comfy footwear options for Summer

June 26th, 2009

So far, I’ve singled out Clarks “Brulees”, Kenneth Cole Reaction “Cedar City wedges”, and Me Too “Nadias” as this season’s comfortable 4 to 10 hour walking shoe options. I own them all, have put them through their paces, and am thrilled with the results.

Here are 9 more comfy, tried-and-test footwear options that have been favourites amongst my clients for Spring and Summer 2009. My clients put them through their paces and they’ve passed with flying colours. Some styles will go as a far as the 12 hour mark. Unbelievable.

They may not be the most fashion forward shoes, but they’re super sweet once you add a buffed foot and great outfit. That way, you’ll increase the style quotient of the shoe while enjoying its unstoppable comfort. Mum’s on the go I hope you’re listening.

ECCO Coto BallerinaClarks LongmeadowDansko SissyJosef Seibel Catalonia 06Clarks BelenBorn MacadamiaClarks LucenaHush Puppies SonnetECCO Bouillon

These styles come in an assortment of colours so be sure to check the different options. Also remember that you can alter shoes if they’re not perfect right off the bat. All foot beds are gloriously cushiony with straps as soft as butter. The ballet flat styles allow the addition of orthotics if you require extra arch support. If you’re still not convinced of their comfort levels, check out the Zappos review for each style. Cheers to happy feet!

Thanks for the nice choice of comfy shoes, Angie! I like the ECCO ballet flats and the gladiator sandal very much. Often comfy shoes make you look like your own grandma, but you just showed me two helpful details:
bright colors and stylish metallics make them look very up to date.
I´ll go for the metallic ECCOs, I guess…..

I love these, all of them. They are gorgeous to me. All of them are as fashion forward as I get. I have 2 pair on the list! Yay!

well timed, Angie. I was just lamenting how difficult it is for me to find comfy shoes. I was also thinking of how much I rely on your reviews to find new shoes and wondering if that’s a little SWF-ish. (joking).

This mum-on-the-go has some hearing issues. :-) I love the red ballet flats and the gladiators, which is really what I wear on the weekends. Everything else looks too comfortable for me. I am weird about shoes, if there is even a hint of a grandma in the shoe styling, I run in the opposite direction. ..

I have to add that many of these shoes do not work for wide footed women. I loved the look of the ECCO flats (bouillon) but they were too long and narrow for me. Same for the Me Too flats. Unfortunately, it’s hard to for a wide footed girl to be comfortable and cute (I recommend the flats from Palladium. You can’t get them on Zappos but they are available on from other online retailers, like shoebuy or even overstocks). http://www.amazon.com/exec/obi.....=Palladium

Angie

thank you so much for these options. I am wondering if I should go ahead and order some or wait until my client shopping day with you—i am considering the clark longmeadow and the Dansko sissy and the clark lucena. my only hesitation is color. should I wait or take a stab at it?

That Clarks Belen looks very interesting – I like a sandal I can slip on and go (no buckling!). The red ballet flat is on the cute side too.

I agree with Danja. I try on the comfort brands…but usually no. It’s a good thing I don’t have fussy feet.

Hi Angie,
You must put on this list Joseph Siebel’s Lorraine or Zeke sandals. They’re in Nordstrom and a bit pricey (about $110) but are SO comfortable and look cute. I have a pair from last year in lime green and I love them.

I have a comfortable-shoe-shopping-suggestion that may be a bit unconventional, but it works for me: Shop the children’s shoe department. True, one can use this tip only if they have relatively small feet. I wear a six-and-a-half in women’s shoes, so that’s not exactly miniscule, but perhaps smaller-than-average (and translates to a size four or five in kids’ sizes). Anyway, I have found great girls’ shoes at Dillard’s, Kohl’s, and Target. In most cases, they’re more comfortable than “adult” shoes because they are designed with kids in mind. There’s more traction on the sole, the foot beds are a tad wider, the heels are a little lower than women’s shoes, and the straps usually feature Velcro closures instead of buckles. Also, they can be quite trendy. I have found several ADORABLE wedge sandals from the Candie’s children’s line at Kohl’s in the past two years. Oh, and they’re usually around half the price as adult shoes!

Wow! Nine comfy shoe options! You always have something new up your sleeve for us, don’t you Angie. Love it!

By the way, when the page first opened, I could only see the pictures in the top row, and I was reminded of Nina’s red shoe collection:

Perfect Vacation Shoes! And I still think they are stylish :) I’ve heard from others how much they love this brand. I MUST buy a pair now :)

Perfect timing! After finally finding my jeans (yippee) I was going to do shoe shopping today. I will try some of the flats, but I’m most excited about trying the KC Cedar City wedges- wish me luck!

Posted on June 26th, 2009 at 9:05 am

I’ve been eyeing those Born gladiators for a while now … perhaps its time to take the plunge!

Phoebe, you’re spot on. Sometimes the colour of a shoe can make it completely stylish. The devil is in the detail.

San, I know you have two pairs of shoes on this list! It’s great to hear your personal validation.

Christie, excuse my ignorance, but what does SWF-ish mean?

Danja abd Chris, I hear you. And I totally agree that most comfort shoes don’t look so fab. But people have to do the best that they can if their feet are REALLY hard to please. Also, seeing the big picture can make a HUGE difference: adding in a fab hairstyle, outfit, handbag seals the deal. I wouldn’t let any of my clients look frumpy. Promise :-)

Sabrina, I know it sounds absolutely crazy but many of these shoes have actually worked on wide-footed women. It depends on two things:

o Where your foot is wide

o Can the snug area be stretched with an at-home foot stretcher

Wide shoes don’t *always* work for wide feet. If your foot is wide in front but narrow in the back, you need a regular shoe that can be stretched over the toe box area. But I hear you that these particular styles do not work. I like your suggestion of Palladium shoes though. Thank you!

Debbie, take a stab at it immediately because there is no time like the present. Then we can rule out those options when we meet.

Thanks Meredith2. I am all for buying one pair of fabulous and comfortable shoes that cost the earth, instead of getting three pairs that are okay.

Nice suggestion, LisaP. I wear a 6.5 which means I’ll check out those recommendations.

Red shoes make me smile too Inge, and good luck Sinead. Keep us posted.

Yay Angie, sooo many options! I love them! Thanks so much I will definitely check some out (you know I have a thing for red shoes *grin*)! This was definitely worth the wait!

I love them all really!! This are reality shoes :-)
I do hope there is a vegan pair, there are more and more stunning vegan pairs too!

Angie how do these compare to the KC’s. Those are super cute and comfy looking. Are they all day shoes too?

SWF – single white female? I’m guessing. Those Born glads are going to be mine! I’ve seen a few pairs here and there, and I can’t run fast enough to ask where she got them! But they are exactly what I’ve been wanting. Thanks for getting these checked out for us, you always have the eye for what we’re looking for.

Posted on June 26th, 2009 at 10:47 am

The red ballet flats look great. It’s fashion forward, in my opinion. :D

Why does comfy have to be so boring? At least Frye puts style first and then adds the comfort on where it should be…second-place!

I don’t think these shoes are boring! I’ve seen someone in the Dansko Sissy sandals (the red patent, top right) and they are fab. She wore them with a printed skirt and blouse and the effect was cool and artsy.

I am eyeing two pairs on this list and I already have 2 of the 3 you mentioned up top (Yes, I snagged a pair of brulees! :-D ) I’ve even had a chance to try on the KC Cedar City wedges at Macy’s the other day and gosh they are so light for a wedge!

I have to leave a shout out for Aerosoles though. Their styles have been quite nice lately. Their high heel sandals and wedges are pretty, SO comfortable, last forever (even for me who wears out shoes VERY fast) AND I haven’t spent more than $40 on pair on sale or at an overstock store.

I have the Hush Puppies and they are very comfy. I don’t view them as very sharp looking, but they do the job and look good under jeans.

My feet are relaxing just from looking at the Danskos (ever since San showed them). They look so soft and cushiony.

I decided I am taking notes on flats for future reference :)

I think these shoes look nice, comfy and stylish. My problem is the huge orthotics I have to wear to manage major foot, knee, and hip problems I’ve had since childhood. I also often need to wear a bulky knee-brace that makes pants and skirts an issue as well. My present pattern is to skip my appliances for short periods if I need to be dressed up for something like a wedding, but for day-long events where walking is involved, I am stuck with orthopedic clunky shoes. I wonder, is there a way to look stylish when you’re struggling with disability-related appliances?

Posted on June 26th, 2009 at 4:08 pm

Apparently, I am a lone wolf, but I don’t like most of these shoes…at all! Maybe the ECCO ballet flats or the gladiators, but I’d have to see them on.

The ballet flats are cute, and I like the Danskos you’ve shown too. The way San wore them with her jeans was fab.

I think the SWF-ish joke is refers to the movie “Single White Female” with a “stalker” storyline. The twist is that one female roommate idolizes the other female roommate, and wants to be like her. Its been ages since I’ve seen this though, so I could not be recalling it exactly.

Thanks for the great suggestions Angie and I ordered two of the pairs. I agree with those who have an aversion to shoes that even hint at “comfy”, but for those of us with difficult feet we simply have no choice. I’m pleased when I can find something that fits my 11N feet at all and unfortunately “cute” has to take a back seat. Sandals are very tricky for me because often pairs marked “N” are not “N” enough for me and the straps just float above my foot. I do miss the days when I could wear cute, trendy shoes, but I suppose nothing was ever that cute in an 11 anyway! Oh well…

Posted on June 26th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I can personally recommend the Ecco ballet flats. They’ve been a staple of my warddrobe since Christmas. Easy to jazz up as well with slip on covers to go over the buttons as well.

I confess that at first I thought Clark’s would be ugly.

But.

I found a strappy wedge with an espadrille style heel at Ross, and it is so darn cool and comfy!

I also found a pair of Clark’s slide in low platforms. So comfy.

I am rethinking my summer sandals.

Posted on June 27th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Kyle, you were blessed with the ability to wear cutting edge fashion shoes no matter what their height or comfort level. This is a talent worth noting on your CV! (Resume if you’re American). You are a lucky fish! It’s no wonder that these don’t light your fire. If I had your shoe wearing skill, these peds wouldn’t do either.

You can’t leave a retail stone unturned. Every season, every brand deserves the chance to start over. That in itself is fabulous.

Posted on June 27th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

That Dansko Sissy sandal has been on my wish list all summer. I have the Sela in green and absolutely love it (from same collection of soft foobed Danskos). I’m hoping to find the Sissy on sale at the end of the summer!

Um, so what about the poor people like me who can’t afford a $120 shoe. Sorry, but unless I randomly get rich, affordability HAS to come before comfort. So yeah.

Posted on June 28th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

I hear you, budget constraints are unfortunately a way of life. But in America shoes are discounted left, right and centre especially when you order online and enter a discount coupon. I got my KC strappy wedges for $54 – quite different to $120.

I have the Clarks in the middle. Love these shoes. Sooo comfortable!

Ecco’s are always good for your feet. It’s a shame they don’t always look fashionable.

Posted on June 29th, 2009 at 2:30 am

Besides the cute flat gladiator style shown, Born has many other great styles of summer sandals. In particuar, I find they thongs and slides with “height” — 2.5 or 3″ wedge heels — to be really cool and comfy.

Fantasia nailed it — “reality shoes.” I hope you know (and suspect you do, Angie) how much it means to me/us to have you finding shoes that we can wear without either shame at their dowdiness or dismay at their discomfort. I got my first pair of Swanns this week (shopper alert: DSW has them online) and almost cried in gratitude at how comfy they were during a running-around day yesterday. Thank you, thank you!

Thanks for the post! I’ve been eying those shiny red Danskos. Not generally a Danskos person, but perhaps they’re worth a try.
