Hi friends! Inspired by Angie's OOTD, I decided I was in a pink mood today! It struck me that social distancing time is a perfect time for me to wear colour - since I'm not going out, I have no opportunities to feel uncomfortable in it #silverlinings

I have two pink tops that were appropriate for today:

1. A lighter, slightly-but-not-too dusty rose crewneck merino knit sweater from Uniqlo.

2. A deeper rose crewneck tee from Joe Fresh.

Question - and frank honestly appreciated, so I can learn! (You won't hurt my feelings, promise )

Which colour do you rather for me. Either, neither, one or the other? To keep things even, I didn't change up accessories and did a very neutral and simple makeup. Handily, the virus has prevented me from dealing with my grays, so this is pretty au naturel for me. (box dye to the rescue when I have a chance!)

I did make a choice for today and will share my outfit, but wanted to see what people's thoughts were first

Caveat: the camera didn't capture either colour perfectly, to my eye; I think it toned them both down somewhat - but given they have the same disadvantage (and colours look different in different circumstances anyway), I don't think it's worth fussing about that too much. The find for the Uniqlo one is even worse a representation! But the t-shirt photo's not bad.

Both look wonderful on you but I like the deeper tee a bit more on you.. your coloring seems mid to high contrast and this deeper color provides more co trash than the lighter pink. The deeper color looks more watermelon or strawberry than pink on my monitor though.

#2. The brighter pink IS your colour, TG. I think you wear the same colours as Suz’s palette (blues, whites, berry pinks, some red.)

Both are good color for you. But I prefer merino sweater at the moment, maybe
because of the shade of color . You look great.

I actually like the softer pink better, as it softens your face compared to the brighter. Something in between would probably be perfect though!

Joy, watermelon is a pretty good descriptor - I just looked at my "cool" swatchbook, and it's probably something like watermelon, but a bit pinker - or shocking pink, but a bit redder ... somewhere in there.

You've articulated by thinking well - sometimes which my colouring (fair, but more contrasted) there seems to be a bit of a trade-off between skin flattery (softer colour) and definition of features (more contrasting colour) ... hmmm ...

Have you looked at Imogen's articles about value contrast v color contrast?
You have pretty high value contrast, but neutral (beige + brown) coloring.

Bright coloring would be blonde/red hair, green/blue eyes, bright (more obviously golden or pinkish) skin-unrelated to darkness level. High color contrast would be those in combination- like Angie or me.

You can be (relatively) high value contrast and high color contrast at the same time, high color but low value contast, high value/low color, or low both (neutral hair + skin + eyes of nearly same darkness).

I like both, but prefer the pale pink. And I must be giving my unbiased view here because in my own life, I’m much more drawn to the brighter pink.

Suntiger, thanks - I've read this before but never understood where I fit; my eyes are a colour (greenish-hazel) but not an overly bright one I guess - I'll check it out again! Thanks! So - would this mean a deeper colour but a less colourful one would be ideal then, in your estimation? (ahem, navy hahahaha)

Both look great on you but I may be really aging and if so I love to see more contrast - watermelon is juicy and fresh-so my fave- otherwise I love a soft pink for ladylike outfits, too!:-)

Both colors look really good on you! Pale pink can be hard to pull off, but this tone is in perfect harmony with your skintone. As others pointed out, the bright provides a lovely contrast with your features that feels balanced and lively. The shades have quite a different effect - softening vs. brightening, so it's hard to pick a favorite!

They are both very good pinks on you as they both bring different aspects of your coloring.

Light pink/watermelon looks lovely with your skin tone ( perhaps a couple more silver chains layered together will add more shine to the look...).
Deeper rose top works well too - higher contrast is good for telecommuting. It depends on your mood and weather ( sunny-cloudy ).
You look great in both.

I was surprised to find that I prefer the pale pink in you. In general I'm a fan of deeper colours and high contrast, and I suspect you are too. But in the pale pink too, I "see" your face more. There is depth and warmth in the tones of your skin. In the darker pink, l see the contrast of eyes. and lips against your skin but it's flatter somehow

It’s interesting there’s such an even split on preference. I guess that means both will work equally well for you. Obviously the vibes and when you would wear them are different - sweater vs tee.

I think they both flatter you well. The first one is more tonal to your skin which really brings the attention to your face and thus away from your clothes. The second is obviously brighter and draws more attention to itself. It’s down to mood/personal preference/audience/context.

The dusty pink is sublime with your coloring! I think I'd probably like the deeper pink in summer. You can definitely wear both equally well!

I like them both on you - for different reasons... I've never been able to get my head around the whole idea of contrast/color, so I can't articulate it that way.

I think the lighter pink brightens your face, in a way that would support a brighter lippie, or darker eye makeup... the darker pink highlights your eyes.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind and helpful comments. I went down the Imogen rabbithole as per suntiger's comments, and that in combination with all your perspectives really helped me get my head around the whole value and colour contrast thing much better!

As I mentioned upthread, your perspectives really helped me articular one of the challenges I have with colour sometimes - the softer colours are more complimentary to my fair skin and green-gray hazel eyes, whereas the stronger colours work better with my higher contrast levels.

As per Imogen and suntiger, this makes total sense give my high value contrast (dark hair + pale skin) and lower colour contrast (very soft pink in the cheeks or else neutral skin, soft grey-green eyes, neutral hair). So everyone was exactly right and now I can play with how to use the two. (I agree with those who commented that a lot can be influenced by weather and mood, too).

In this case, I chose the pale pink, because I felt the colour was was more flattering overall, especially to my skintone. However, as those of you who preferred the brighter pink might agree, there is a bit of danger of veering into insipid territory without adding contrast. So I dug out this scarf, which is not perfect, but at least the pattern offers some contrast, which I think really makes the outfit look a lot better. Imogen's guidelines might say it would be better if it were darker overall, and if was neutral contrast + only 1 colour. The ideal might be something like a Burberry plaid-type scarf in say black/navy, the pink, and some white?

What do you think? (sorry for the horrendous lighting; it's gone very gray out)

The pastel is pretty, calming and fashionable - more your comfort zone
The bright is fresh, strong and flattering - spreads energy.

I did note the very soft pink of your cheeks. I assumed it was makeup. That is natural! GORGEOUS.

Delurked pointed out that the even split in preference suggests that both colors are flattering. I have to agree. I didn't vote because I could not pick one over the over.

Angie suggested the brighter color spreads energy. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but that makes really good sense to me too.

Finding the exact right shade of blush or pale pink to complement fair skin is *so* tricky. The Uniqlo sweater is a definite winner for that reason alone. It looks amazing on you! I like the bright top too, but it's hard for me to even think about wearing short sleeves right now. Still too chilly!

Both are good, but I prefer the second one slightly. I have been reading more about bright vs. soft colors, and I think you can handle the bright ones. Someone who is bright will look a little less vivid in soft colors. Now I am off to see what you picked!
