Two looks with K/R vest for evaluation

I even wore a white shirt and a smile for Angie! I am totally willing to return this if it looks dated. That said, it seems so versatile and like it would work with almost everything a vest can work with in my closet.

Any new opinions? TIA!

I love both outfits! The vest seems like a great addition to your wardrobe. Is that a necklace or part of your shirt's neckline (I'm looking at these photos on a tiny screen)? It looks great whatever it is - it makes the white shirt so arty and interesting.

I sort of feel like Suz. I have been keeping my eye out for a long vest, and even tried a navy one at Zara, but none seemed quite right to the extent that I am not sure I even understand what quite right will look like.

I still like it, and I still like the look overall. I was a bit confused by the question of modernity. I see several versions of this kind of vest all over the place at work... granted I only work at one store, but it seems pretty trendy/modern to me.

When I think of thrift shop vests, I think of menswear styles.

It looks good to me, but I'm not sure I could identify a truly modern vest vs. a classic one vs. a dated one. For example, everyone seems to like my mullet vest on me, but I'm not sure where it fits in that continuum - or whether it's just saved by the fact that the back is such a statement piece it doesn't matter what the front looks like?

I am confused right along with you! I still think I want a plain black vest of some sort to replace the (clearly dated) F21 one, but I have no idea what I should be looking for. I'm even more confused because I want strong shoulders (works best with my body type) but I have no idea whether that is dated or not either!

Interesting. If I have to wear this with a sleeveless shirt then it is not practical or useful in any way. My idea was that it would substitute for a blazer over short and log sleeves. I could only wear it bare-armed casually or over long sleeved shirts and dresses.

With that in mind, maybe a vest is not in the cards for me?

I really like it! It's true that most of the looks I've admired with vests have been over sleeveless tops, and short sleeves aren't my very favorite look with it, but I personally think the vest is a keeper- and modern. But then I have one that's pretty similar, so I guess I'm biased.

I have just caught up on the vest posts;). I still think it looks great and I like it:). I think this will look best with a long sleeve underneath, a short structured sleeve and sleeveless top. What I am not so keen on is the tshirt sleeve...I think that is what is dating this not the vest.

So far I've only worn mine over long sleeved tops, and I like it that way a lot. Something with sleeve interest or contrasting sleeves is fun.

Commented while cooking so back to explain further.

Long sleeves in the same colour can create the look of a jacket, a contrasting colour almost creates a mixed media vibe. A scrunched sleeve would look good to scrunched up to the elbow. Tshirt sleeves can create a funny line and in these pictures adds a volume at the shoulder that I find not as attractive as the slimline look of a more fitted sleeve. Personally I don't need convincing on the vest but I would be interested to see this styled with the other short sleeved tops you might be considering. I would also love to see it with a sleeveless top. In the warmer weather I find that to be a really attractive look (and you have great arms).

I like it. A lot. The point hem in front is nice and the length nods to menswear without being it. I like it with the T, but with a grain of salt i am currently wearing a white T and the black dress as a vest and feeling fab so this could be my sugar eye....

Well, I'm a vest lover, in any decade, but this still seems quite modern and sleek to me. The short tee under vest does invoke the 90's a bit, but in a good-idea revisited way, not a dated way.

I have a completely biased opinion because I'm also on a vest hunt - I like the style and the versatility and I think the fit is spot on. The whole "modernity" of an item is confusing as all get out to me and raises the question if an item has just arrived new in the store, isn't it automatically modern?

I've tried a couple of vests last year but couldn't get it right so I'm not sure I can be of help. This one looks nice in fit and style to me. I wish they were coming in more colors than just black (for me at least). For spring/summer I could see a drapey grey or dusty mid-tone blue.

I really like it on you. It makes you look very sleek. Deborah is right about the sleeve issue. I don't like vests worn with sleeveless tops because the look is somewhat contrived. After all, if it's warm enough for a sleeveless top, why add another layer?

Ok, so the sleeve is an issue here. I wanted to show it with white so you could see detail. Does no one like the 80s/90s nod this way? I was hoping for a scrappy tomboy look like in Fried Green Tomatoes or Some Kind of Wonderful (talk about DATED!). But maybe I'm just stuck in the past with vests.

Deborah, great suggestions. I have the day off so will play around more.

Shannon, my question exactly although I think some items are more modern than others, and it's probably in the wearing that it's made classic, modern or dated. I want you to get that white vest.

Thanks so much for chiming in, Angie! That is a fantastic vest and I really considered it when you first recommended it. However, I am going to skip the whole vest thing for now if these aren't working. I am pretty sure I'm keeping the Madewell leather moto vest, and I was looking for a more androgynous/menswear vibe with these attempts. I already have so much moto clothing and am trying to stop indulging myself in it.

The Right Vest an ongoing HEWI for me, and it may just be my own sugar eye for it that is keeping me on the trail.

In the interest of learning, what I'd love to know is WHY this doesn't work - it is a case of "you just know it when you see it" and I'm blinded by my own sugar eye, or is there something specific I should pin down?

Is this vest tailored or like a jersey? Was there another vest that was also potentially outdated? I'm a bit confused. I like it and your two outfits here - esp sans socks.

I'm afraid tho that I live in a parallel universe, in Hipsterville. Everything reads differently against a backdrop of furniture made from shipping pallets (it's cool stuff I tell you! rawr!). If you were standing in the middle of Piccadilly Circus, I don't know...
