K/R: Eileen Fisher Eva sandals/ update w/ decision

It happens around this time each year, I think: I get restless with my current sandal selection and crave something new. This year I'm craving flat, walkable, yet chic sandals. Yesterday I brought home these Eileen Fisher Eva sandals, and today I'm trying them around the house. They are comfortable. I think they will be good walking sandals for my purposes (urban commuting, travel and sight-seeing, not on challenging terrain). I like that they are a little more refined looking than sandals that I usually choose. But are they me? One concern I have is the color, black. I tried on the camel, but didn't like the color against my skin. There were no other options. I thought the black looked good against my skin, but maybe it's too high-contrast? DH commented that they look "stark" with a dress. And I would want to wear them with dresses that I think would go with black, such as the one I'm wearing here.

What say you all? Yay (keep) or Nay (return)?

Your black sandals harmonize with the black stripes in your dress. They look fine.

These do not look stark to me, especially as they show lots of skin. I like them and would be considering a pair if I could wear sandals. I wish EF would make flats in more colors.

I think they look great, strappy enough and enough skin showing that they are not stark at all. You ask the question "are they you" well I think they look really good but to be honest I feel I am used to seeing you in slightly more edgy footwear... but I do like them.

Thanks, Joy. The skin does seem key. I have a pair of black sandals that are bootie-like, and they are a LOT more black. They don't look too good with a light summer dress, imo.
DH's comment gave me pause, though. I think he's used to seeing me in taupe shoes and sandals!
Deborah, I think that's another question I have about the style for me--a bit of missing edge--I couldn't put my finger on it. I'm drawn to the strappy look, though, and usually strappy doesn't work for me. These straps are smooth and don't feel like they are cutting into my skin, even though the sandals are quite snug and secure.

I like them, especially from the side/back...I think I'm unused to seeing you in this open of a shoe. Do you run cold at all? If so, I would think the season for those in Seattle would be awfully short.

I like them on you, but I'd like them more in pewter etc as they are a *bit* stark. [I type as one who has the same issue.]

Are you up for DIYing brand-new shoes with metallic leather shoe cream?

If so, Tarrago Antique Silver or Platinum would be my recs. In the jar, not anything else.

I have this gap also and it is quite a challenging gap to fill. I like these sandals and think they look great with this dress, and I can see them also with pants/shorts or other dresses. With your glasses or a black bag they work well.

What other colours could you do? Tan? Cognac? White? Metallic?

Vix, thanks for your thoughts on the starkness. I think with dark hair it might work better, huh? I would not venture to dye these shoes. The straps are elastic, and the shoes are too expensive for me to feel comfortable experimenting.

Jenn, you are right; the wearing period here would not be long for me. Good point! Ideally a less expensive sandal would be a better use of money.

JAileen, those are nice, too. I saw them on Nordstrom's site in two colors I might like, also. I wondered if they are too close to my P.Monjo's, which admittedly are not flat, but are extremely walkable for me (I don't have a Find, but they are pictured below).

Sal, I've been wanting some tan sandals, but tan or cognac are not really good colors for me. I would wear them (and have done so) in shoes. But I realize when I try on tan sandals, I like the idea better than I like the actual sandals on me. Warm shades of tan just don't look that great against my skin, to my eye. So my usual cool neutrals in taupe, gray, blue, sage, etc., are probably best. (I don't like bright white in footwear for myself, either.) Sometimes I think blues can bring out the spider veins in my legs that I wish to ignore.

Oh, my gosh, you guys--what about these? Oh, I just noticed they aren't the same heel, which is one of the things I like about the black ones. These are flatter. I find that little bit of a heel on the black ones helps overcome the lack of arch support, oddly enough.

Not everyone likes black footwear in the summer, or handbags for that matter. Your husband may not be used to the look. I wear black sandals all the time--my skin is quite light--I like the look. In any case, I think the EF sandals look good--great with what your wearing. Not exciting maybe but versatile I would think. I too was looking for a pair of comfortable "walking sandals" and found a pair from Naot in "metal" (pewter) that are very comfortable but not as refined as what you're looking for

I agree that a little bit of heel can make a difference in comfort (in a good way). I would find the 'Otto' tough to walk in for any distance--I think.

Jill, thank you! I like Naot, too. I can wear their medium width sandals, and have been scouring sites for those, too. I think they are a little more casual, and hence, too much like what I already have. I have the Naot Canaans, and they are very nice. I got them a year or two ago. Now I find I don't want to wear a platform as much as I used to.

Oh, and these are black, too, and I have no problem wearing them in summer. They aren't as dark as the Eileen Fishers, though, since they have a lighter footbed and some light tan on the straps--maybe that makes a difference to DH.

I love the 'Canaan'--very nice. I bought the 'Kayla' (for vacation walking) which is definitely more casual than what you're looking for.

Ooh firecracker - you can't go by me. I love them!! I think they are elegant and interesting, very classy. I'm into EF footwear. She makes sandals and flats I can wear without orthotics. I also like this can skew casual and dressy. But only you know if they are you. Lots of beautiful options above if you are not "feeling" them.

Well, finding the right type of warm-weather shoe for a certain combo of outfit/activity can be such a PITA that if you like them, get them.

EF doesn't do edgy so these are easily a shoe you can wear for a few seasons. If that bothers you, probably best to return.

Gryffin, "I also like this can skew casual and dressy." This is a big appeal to me, and what distinguishes them from my other sandals. I could walk in them all day and also wear them with a little nicer dress to go out. (Admittedly, that doesn't happen often, but I do have a summer dress or two.) Which brings up a good idea: I should put them on with those dresses and see how they do.

Here are some other dresses with the sandals. I have nude pumps that go with a few of these dresses, and I wear some of my casual sandals with some of them, too. So it's not like I have NO footwear to go with them. The blue, white, & green linen dress (photo 5--please excuse the wrinkles--I pulled it out of the hamper to photograph!) is a bit of a footwear challenge, though.

I still like them but now that I see them with more of your dresses, "are they me" is a good question.
You have kind of a bold style and I think you're probably more comfortable and better suited by shoes that have more interesting and/or unusual details.
I'm thinking the issue isn't the contrast between your skin and the black, it's that the only details are black straps and that doesn't merge well with your textured and rich colored wardrobe.

I can see that dress #5 could be hard to find footwear for and I don't think these sandals work. Probably your best nude shade would be better. I do like them with the black dress (#3) best.
