K/R: Chanel type jacket and print top

I've been so in the mood for spring lately, even though we haven't even had the worst of winter yet. My Pinterest page is covered with cheery bright colors!

I'm looking for some spring color in polished casual wear, but I'm having so much trouble finding anything that works for me. I ordered about 10 things from Ann Taylor and I'm taking them all back. It's so discouraging!

I think this Esprit jacket has some possibilities, but I don't know how to style it. Here it's with a print tee with diagonal ruffles from Banana Republic, and I'm afraid it's too busy with it.

The jacket is sort of dark blue and black cotton tweed with a little metallic sheen in the mix and with a fringy edge. It doesn't show up well in my pictures.

Is it too short? Is it too busy with this top? If so, what would you wear it with? Do the pearls look stupid with it?

Verrry cute jacket! I agree that the BR top isn't the right one though.

What about some ivory top, or something in the red/pinks (I'm always tired of red right after Christmas though).

Or my personal favorite would be citron

I think the pearls are good with it. They lay perfectly in the rounded neck.

Don't forget that sometimes a turtleneck (long enough to extend lower than the jacket) can look really nice. Then you might want to skip the necklace or try a pendant.

Parsley I like the jacket and have one similar that I am also working out what to wear it with. I will watching this post closely for the responses.

I actually like the patterned top underneath. The colors are pretty and it creates interest. I personally don't think that you need the pearls. I would add a long pendant rather than something short.

Would you try a striped top underneath he jacket? Would that constitute Parisian Chic? Im still learning.

Thanks, Deborah. I thought about a long pendant, but I was afraid it would be too much going on with the ruffles on the top, and actually I don't really have a good option. Note to self: look for long pendant!

I think it would be great with a striped top, but unfortunately the only one I have was too long and too bulky to look good under it. I might look for a different one and try it.

I just bought a very similar jacket like that today at Ann Taylor and I plan to wear it with faded skinny jeans and a white or cream tank.

I like them both, but maybe not together? i like the idea of a long necklace, then maybe they'd look better together? The top is a really pretty color!

I agree, citron would be great! Or maybe a bright pink. Red would look good, but for some reason it's not what I'm looking for with it.

This is really showing me what gaping holes I have in my wardrobe!

One thing leads to another, doesn't it? I don't have the right top to go under, the right pendant, the right shoes... Aacckk! I need to get shopping!

Parsley, I think because the jacket has very classic elements, the top underneath needs to (or rather could have) a more edgy element, otherwise it could end up looking too conservative. I think that's why I see a patterned top of some description under it because it is kind of unexpected. I think I have seen Sveta do something similar. I will see i I can find it and add the link.

I love the jacket! It seems like it has a lot of styling potential, from casual to dressed up. I like the short length and think you will have fun adding longer tops underneath. You could go either way patternwise in your under layer -- go crazy with a bright print or color or understated with a monochromatic solid.

However, do you think it's an issue if it doesn't work with other things you currently have?

You're right, I'm not wanting to make this too conservative, so I'd like to wear it with jeans or casual pants, and that's why I was afraid the pearls would be just too Chanel-esque.

I'm going to be on the lookout for a striped tank or tee and a pendant.

Oh, I just remembered that I have a lime green tank! That might work! i just have to dig it up, but it'll have to be tomorrow.

cciele, sadly, NOTHING works with what I already have unless it goes with black or gray. I really am in a renewal phase and I'm willing to buy a few pieces to have a some outfits that I feel good in.

I think I read a blog somewhere, about corporate dressing, and they listed jacket types and how to style them, nut unfortunately, she put channel last and the reason was 'difficult to style'. i have a black one that is an orphan so I will be very interested to see how you finally decide to wear it! I might get mine out again.

I've ordered another kind of Chanel-style jacket, as well (pictured below), and I'm thinking that it might be easier because it has so many different colors in it. We'll see!

Sara, Wow! That's so helpful- Thanks for going to all that trouble! It does seem that a lot of people wore a longer top underneath, and skinnies. I tried that, but didn't think it was flattering on me. (see picture below)
Also my shoes are not a good color in this picture, and please ignore the silly expression!

I think the silhouette looks great on you with the skinnies. But the top is throwing me off. It's a great top for the skinnies, just not with this jacket (for me at least).

I DO like the shoe color though If you had an ivory (or ivory with black polka dots) top, then the shoes could be great fun!

Okay, well here I go...I LOVE the two pieces together, Parsley. I love the longer top underneath (a great look on almost everyone---makes it more interesting to have some different proportions). The "blues" are going to be VERY big this year and with your dark hair, they are gorgeous! I like the fabrication and style of the Chanel jacket against the silky look of the top and think it's a great look to take into the office and then put with skinny jeans for a night out. Frankly, I wouldn't change a thing---

Gorgeous jacket! It's similar to one that Scarlet recently bought, I believe.

I think I'd prefer it with a different top, but the general idea is great!

The boxier, collarless jacket can feel difficult to style at first. One of my denim jackets is collarless; i also have a sort of scoop neck Chanel style jacket; you can see it in this thread: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....he-haircut.

I find, for myself, that when I'm wearing it with skinnies, a loose blousy top is not the best. I like a snugger fitting longer top. In cooler months I like a scarf at the neckline. But this will depend on individual proportions a bit.

The other jacket you've chosen has the tweedy feel but is fitted with a collar; it will have a very different vibe.

I'm with fauxpas -- I like the blue silky top under the jacket. Nice contrast, and the blue in the shoes complement the blues in the top.

Suz, I appreciate your thoughtful comments, and for sharing the pictures of how you've styled yours. OT, but that was the first picture I've seen of you with your old hairstyle. It was pretty, but your short style has so much more sass!
I like the crossover cowl neckline you've put with the scoopneck jacket. I wonder how something like that would work with mine.

So I'm pretty sure I want to keep the jacket, and I'll be trying some different tops with it later today when I have time and undoubtedly ask opinions!

Parsley, I like your jacket and the way you've paired it with the blue top! That's thinking outside the box and is inspiring to me. I have a Chanel-inspired jacket, too, but mine has a collar. I usually wear it with black, which isn't very creative, but I like the idea of using stripes, or Ana's suggestion of a white or cream tank! I think I'm going to try that next time to juxtapose dressy with casual.

Hey there! I love the style of this jacket! You could pop it over one of your fab new dresses (didn't you just get one or two in a bright color) and I like Suz's idea of wearing it over a form fitting solid T with a patterned scarf at the neck. I tend to style these in the "expected" way (plain blouse and pearls) and date myself....I'm really trying to find ways to edge up these classic pieces, but it's hard when everything else in my closet is classic, too!

What I really want to figure out though, is a way to make it a fun, casual look with jeans or casual pants since that's mostly what I wear.

Well, today I went shopping and tried some striped tank tops that might work. Maybe I should start another post for opinions on those.

Not to be dense, but what would constitute an edgy white top?
I have to be a little careful of white tops because they're often not too forgiving of little tummy bulges.
