Outfit Formula: Fab Fall Textures

Aside from the cosy weather, fun layers, and earthy colour palettes, my clients generally like dressing in the Autumn because of the abundance of textures. Many of them also like to pattern mix in both subtle and bold ways. To kick off Fall, here are texture-rich outfit ideas that might tickle your fancy. Choose any colour palette.

1. Playful Dandy

The multiple fabrics in this outfit amplify its high textural integrity. The palette is brown with a dash of blue. A pair of wide cropped corduroy pants is combined with a checked flannel shirt. It’s topped with a tweed jacket in a false plain. Boots, belt and necktie in brown leather add further textural interest, and a finishing touch. A felt hat adds a dramatic touch. The pendant necklace on a leather chord adds some shine. Maximally harmonious.

Playful Dandy

2. Western

A soft cotton patterned fit-and-flare midi dress is combined with a long over-the-knee patterned woolly sweater coat. The gentle flow of the dress creates an interesting contrast with the straight cut of the topper. Cowboy boots with complex embroideries, and the shearling trim on the sweater coat add further textural interest. A leather belt and its metal hardware and layered beaded necklaces complete the look.

Western

3. Geometric Slouch

The earthy quiet geometric pattern of the bottoms works well with the earthy loud chevron pattern of the sweater. The pullover is very slouchy, and semi-tucked to showcase some waistline, which adds structure to the outfit. Patent taupe boots match the palette and add a dramatic touch. Textural interest comes through by combining smooth, ribbed, and shiny fabrics.

4. Romantic Hard Edge

And last, an almost all-black look with a sprinkling of magenta is another way to wear autumnal texture. A black lace skirt is combined with a cosy and soft woolly turtleneck. Feel free to make this component neutral if that’s more to your taste. It’s topped with a black patent leather jacket that’s shiny and dramatic. Studded black loafers add further textural interest and a little more shine. Ribbed black ankle socks are a trendy finishing touch. Works wonderfully well. Add jewellery, watch and bag as desired.

Who else enjoys to create textural interest in their Autumn outfits?

Link Love: The Sizing Issue

Recently, The Guardian published several articles diving deeper into the complexity of sizing clothes and how people are struggling to find the right fit. In “Why Women’s Clothing Sizes Don’t Measure Up“, they discuss how brands match their product sizes to their target market, which means that a size 12 at store one fits differently to the same size in a different store.

One size fits nobody: markers of high-quality clothing are getting harder to find“, was also an interesting read. From poorly finished seams to an over-reliance on elastane, cost-cutting in the manufacturing process is leading to less comfortable, less durable clothing.

In “The challenge of finding size-inclusive jeans“, four size-diverse fashion industry workers share what they look for in a pair of jeans — and where they’ve found the right fit.

Runcarla found this discussion of the role the fantasy self plays in style and fashion quite moving: “I think the takeaway was not that the fantasy self takes away from one’s style, but needs to be acknowledged, understood, and honoured — but in balance with real life.”

Margaret Howell’s high-quality classic workwear is bit of an inspiration for Olive Green, and she directs us to this article about the art and craft of making clothes with lasting appeal.

As a lover of all things Bloomsbury, Suz enjoyed this discussion of the way the group is influencing style — yet again.

More on the subject of Bloomsbury and design: “the Bloomsbury Group’s casually ornamental style is inspiring designers today.

She also liked “Has the Era of Peacocking Come to an End?

Suz also likes how in this article on dress codes in the US Senate, the author insists that clothes send messages, and also pays heed to the fact that for women and non-binary people, these decisions are always more complicated.

LaPed really enjoyed this interview between one of her favorite poets, Ocean Vuong, and up-and-coming designer Peter Do. She found their reflections on cultural identity (both are Vietnamese-American) and how it informs their relationship to clothing and consumer goods in general thought-provoking. (Note: the photos feature some nudity, so perhaps NSFW.)

Zaeobi found it interesting to see what AI (in this case, MidJourney) ‘thinks’ of each US state’s fashion trends and standout features.

Angie doesn’t take much notice of what fashion editors are wearing, but she enjoyed this article! It puts into practice the dramatic or more subtle juxtaposition of casual and dressy wardrobe items, which defines our current fashion era. Slouch with tailoring, sporty items with formal ones, and a whole lot of creative remixing so that we wear wardrobe items for longer and in new ways. A sustainable style solution!

Finding a perfect fitting bra can be an exercise in frustration. Nuancedream was surprised to learn that the best ones are made in Poland.

Although Jaime loves street style, she finds a lot of it over the top or too many pictures to digest. So she especially appreciated this article.

Four Essential Shopping Tools

You need a high level of focus to create a functional, wearable and sustainable wardrobe. Whether you’re shopping for five minutes or a full day, it’s important to have a mental toolbox with your goals, list, budget, and positivity close at hand.

Shop with Sharp Tools

Goals should include both what you do and don’t want to achieve. Building your list with seasonal priorities is best. Make your budget count by deciding upfront where to skimp and spend. Shop with emotion and a positive attitude.

These tools are intuitive for some and more regimented for others. Use them to create a balance between wardrobe discipline and having spontaneous fun with fashion. Shop without them, and you may end up with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.

Lilacs, Pinks, and Pearls in the UK

Josephine Lalwan (73) lives in the UK and spends part of the year in the South of France. She documents her outfits on her blog, chic at any age, and on Instagram. Josephine’s style is classic with on-trend touches. She likes to sport maxi skirts, loves pearls and hats, and looks amazing in lilac and pinks.

“My style has not really changed over the years. I tend to buy classic investment pieces for my basic wardrobe and then add accessories especially jewellery, scarves and hats to personalise my outfits. I like to experiment with different combinations. I give a nod to the fashion trends, however generally stick to the shapes that suit me. I do like a bit of humour and quirkiness. I like to have fun with my clothes”

Josephine Lalwan - 1

This is a fab example of Angie’s Easy Summer Dress Outfit Formula. Josephine is sporting a relaxed-fit linen midaxi shirtdress in eye-catching magenta. The white top peeking out adds crispness and bookends our blogger’s on-trend sneakers. The side slits allow for breezy ease of movement and add an alluring touch. The button tab is a fun little design detail. An oversized beach bag in cream and white amps up the casually relaxed Summer vibe. The dusty pink floppy hat is unexpected paired with the magenta dress, and brings playful glam to the look.

Josephine Lalwan - 2

When the sun is very strong, Josephine likes to wear roomy, loose-fitting tops, like this white blouse with mandarin collar. The A-line silhouette, crisp fabric, and layered front create an architectural effect. The fitted shoulder adds structure and tempers the volume. Our blogger has paired the blouse with black relaxed-fit tapered trousers, and trendy fisherman sandals. The white footwear bookends Josephine’s silver hair. The cut-outs on the sandals are a subtle way to add a bit of textural interest. Sunnies and orange-red lippy complete this polished graphic-vibe look.

Josephine Lalwan - 3

Lilac is one of my favourite colours, and Josephine is rocking this cool-toned shade of pastel purple. She’s wearing a linen maxi shirtdress with V-neckline that is perfect to showcase her playful bubble pearl necklace. The silver metallic belt with laser cut-outs adds structure and a bit of subtle bling. The outfit would look great with silver or white sandals, or fashion sneakers. A white fedora and black sunnies add flamboyant flair. The white clutch, pink lipstick, and soft scarf in shades of pink, purple and light blue that work beautifully with the dress complete the look.

Josephine Lalwan - 4

Josephine combines cropped navy trousers with a pink geometric patterned blouse for this polished casual Spring look. The barrel trousers subtly “balloon” away from the thighs, while the hems taper back to the leg, which adds structure. The blouse’s flowy silhouette and balloon sleeves create a volume-on-volume look. Josephine has tied the tie-neck laces lower on the chest so that they don’t compete with the chic string of white knotted pearls. At first, I thought the sandals had a floral print, but they are in fact adorned with sparkly, bright-coloured rhinestones. So fun! Red lippy and toenails, sunnies, and a cream fedora finish off the look.

Josephine Lalwan - 5

Josephine dresses up a flowing casual maxi skirt with a white button-down shirt. Tying the shirt at the waist lengthens the leg line from the waist down and adds a sassy effect. So do the popped collar and scrunched sleeves. Our blogger’s white fisherman sandals make a second appearance, and pick up the white floral pattern in the blue skirt. Knotted pearls further dress up the look, and add subtle lustre.

Josephine Lalwan - 6

This is another magnificent-in-lilac look! Here, our blogger has paired crisp white relaxed leg trousers with an oversized sweatshirt for a nonchalant volume-on-volume look. Folding back the sleeves adds some structure. Adding a scarf in a slightly darker shade of lilac creates a tonal effect that feels harmonizing and fresh combined with the white pants. A pearl bracelet, pink lipstick and Josephine’s trusted white fedora are the accessories of choice. I can see white, lilac, or light pink sneakers working beautifully here.

I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of Josephine’s wonderful outfits. Let us know in the comments, and check out her blog and Instagram account for more style inspiration.

Fall and Winter Trends

The ’90s has been the biggest influence on fashion over the last few years. Interestingly, it was a decade that showcased very varied fashion. The ’90s started with a meaningful nod to the ’80s and then moved into a revival of ‘70s fashion in the second half of the decade. As a result, its fashion influence feels like three decades instead of one. This diversity of silhouettes is very welcome in 2023.

My denim trends guide for Fall and Winter is very much what it was for Spring and Summer. Additionally, here are eleven bigger trends, vibes, and colours that deserve a fashionable mention. As always, pick and choose from the buffet of trends, add a personal stamp to the vibe, and do your own thing.

1. Red and Chocolate

Red, in all its shades and tones is the colour of the season. From the brightest tomato red and electric fire engine, to the darkest wines and burgundies, and everything in between. Brown is the next biggest colour so think dark and milk chocolate, espresso, mocha and mahogany. Think patterns and solids. Wear reds with browns, and in any wardrobe item.

2. Magenta, Orchid, Teal, Cobalt, and Butter

Those starved of jewel tones like cool magenta pinks, fuchsia, all sorts of purples, teal greens and blues, and electric cobalt will finally see it coming through. Unexpectedly, a pastel buttery yellow is making an Autumn and Winter appearance. It’s combined with earth tones and teal.

Speaking of earth tones, they are not in short supply. They continue to feature strongly in the US, which makes me think they sell well at retail.

3. Tall Boots

Tall boots are the biggest shoe trend of all. Think dressy and casual mid-calf, knee-high, or over-the-knee boot silhouettes in a heel height that you can manage. Tall flat boots are fab too. Iconic and classic western boots are enjoying a particularly fab fashion moment.

Tall boots are combined with skirts, dresses, culottes, and shorts across all lengths. They are also worn over sleek pants and jeans equestrian style, and over baggier pants and jeans, ‘70s style.

4. Loose Jeans and Pants

Pants and jeans are wider and looser all over. Some pants and jeans are VERY wide, whereas others are gently wide or flared at the hems. Some wide silhouettes are barrel and lantern-shaped, and taper back at the hem. Tailored looks are as on-trend as slouchy looks.

Rise lengths and hem lengths vary enormously, just like they did throughout the ‘90s. Low, mid, and high rises are on-trend, and either flat or pleated at the waist. Lengths vary from crops that are two to three inches above the ankle bone, to full-length hems that skim the vamps of shoes, the surface of the floor, or slouch in a heap on the ground.

Full-length pants are having a particularly strong fashion moment. Full-length silhouettes with narrower hems scrunch a little or a lot over footwear.

5. Dark Romance

Head-to-toe textured black, or black and other very dark colours, or patterns with black backgrounds continue the mid to late ‘90s theme. Think black lace, tulle, sequins, patent leather, faux fur, textured leather, velvet, moody dark florals, textured knits, tweedy wovens, rosettes, satin, chiffon, silk, jacquards, corsetry, dark nail polish, dark eyewear, and dark lipstick. Interpret the looks minimally or maximally.

6. Tuxedos and Pants Suits

Trouser suiting continues to be strong, and is offered in a range of fits and silhouettes. Tailored, fluidly tailored, or oversized, so take your pick. Some blazers are big and long, and others are structured, hip-bone length, or short. Belted blazers are having a fab fashion moment.

Pants suits are thought of as versatile attire because they can be dressed up or down. For example, wear a dressier suit in a loosely tailored or fluid fit with a tee, shirt, sweater, knitted top, sneakers, hi-tops, boots, loafers, and crossbody bag or backpack.

A pants suit is not only meant to be an occasion dressing thing. Wear the suit like you would any pair of bottoms and jacket — only they match — and get on with your day. ‘70s corduroy pants suits are coming through too. In fact, corduroy is having a fun fashion moment.

The trouser suit revival for dressy attire comes in handy for work, over the holiday season, or for Winter occasion dressing. It’s practical and keeps you warm. I love wearing pants suits for dressy occasions precisely for those reasons.

7. Maxis, Midaxis, Midis, Minis

Hemlines vary greatly, just like they did throughout the ‘90s. Midi, midaxi and maxi dresses and skirts are there but knee-length, above the knee, and mini skirts are coming through too. Most of the silhouettes are A-line, pleated, tiered, wrap, babydoll, trumpet, shift, fluidly column, shirt, sack, and flared in some way for ease of movement. Maxi pencil skirts with long slits are fringe trending.

Sweater dresses, full circle skirts, and layering dresses and skirts over pants, are silhouettes and combinations enjoying their fashionable moment. The idea is to wear any length of dress and skirt with tall boots.

8. Metallics

Gold, silver, pewter, and copper footwear, bags, and belts are strong. You’ll see metallic non-neutrals too. Big metal belt buckles are having a fashion moment. Metallic clothing is a fringe trend and has its futuristic appeal. Coated metallic jeans are fringe tending. Metallics can be worn more subtly when shimmery threads are woven through the fabrics of any wardrobe item, in any pattern, solid or colour.

9. Peplums

A peplum is a short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s top, sweater, dress, or jacket to create a flounce. Sometimes peplums feature in the front or back of a garment, and not both.

10. Leather Clothing

Leather and faux leather clothing continues to be strong. Think leather or faux leather jackets, coats, pants, skirts, shorts, shirts, dresses, and vests in any colour and silhouette. The quality of faux leather improves every year, and costs a fraction of real leather clothing.

11. Statement Socks

Making a bold or subtle statement with socks has gained momentum. Match solid or patterned neutral or non-neutral socks with your outfit. Create a low or high contrast with your shoes. Socks can be thick and woolly, or refined and thin. Wear socks with loafers, pumps, Mary Janes, and dressy sandals too. Allow socks to peek out from the tops of taller and shorter boots when wearing them with skirts, dresses, or shorts. And if statement socks aren’t your thing, have fun with hosiery instead.

Half of these trends greatly appeal to me, and are well represented in my wardrobe. A big YES to red, tall boots, looser jeans and pants, pants suits, faux leather clothing, metallics, midis, and midaxis. A smaller nod to chocolate brown and peplums. How about you?
