Capsule: Winter Career Wear

A wardrobe capsule is ANY collection of clothing, footwear and accessories that helps you to satisfy your dressing needs in one or more areas of your life. Seeing your wardrobe in terms of multiple capsules is effective because wardrobe items MUST relate well to each other. If they don’t, you’ll end up with a set of items that you love, but are hard to pull together into outfits. Furthermore, capsules break up your wardrobe into manageable chunks which makes shopping for items and creating outfits a lot easier.

A few points upfront:

  • A mix and match capsule is built around a colour palette, a season and a dress code. I’ve chosen dark neutrals with light neutral, citron and teal accents. I used both black and ink because they work well together in one outfit. The season is Winter with a nod to the start of Spring, and the dress code is business casual which means no jeans except for Casual Fridays.
  • This capsule serves as a TEMPLATE that consists of 4 bottoms, 6 tops, 3 inside toppers, 1 outside topper, 4 pairs of shoes, and 2 handbags. Use this template to build career wear capsules in other colours to create a functional working wardrobe.
  • This capsule is not supposed to represent your entire career wear wardrobe, but it would provide a solid starting point for one. You can either flesh out this capsule, or create another capsule using a different colour palette.
  • Career wear capsules that combine modern classics with trendy pieces are a winning formula. That way you’ll feel professional and fashionable at work.
  • All of the tops work with all of the bottoms. All of the toppers work over all of the tops. All of the tops, in turn, can be worn with any of the bottoms if you’re prepared to pattern mix and sport some arty outfits with drama and drape. Some of the footwear options work with all four bottoms.
  • The silhouette, texture and colour variety of the items in this capsule allows you to create many outfit combinations that are distinct from each other. From a simple column of dark neutrals right up to a maximal combination of sporting four patterns at once, and all the combinations in between.

Note: This capsule is not suited to a strict business formal work environment, which probably requires a matching suit. But even if this is your situation, you might find the capsule useful for your more casual workdays. I have also found that in recent years many work environments have transitioned to a more casual dress code.

On to the components of the capsule.

Career Wear Capsule

Bottoms

Choose an assortment of silhouettes and colours. Choose two dark and one light pair of trousers, and a patterned skirt. I chose a pair of classic bootcut trousers in ink, a trendy pair of ankle pants in light grey, a basic pair of black Ponte knit skinnies, and a classic pencil skirt in a fashion forward pattern. Keep all four bottoms solid if patterns aren’t your thing, or change the assortment to two pairs of pants and two pairs of skirts.

Tops

Choose an assortment of silhouettes, fabrics and colours across patterns and solids. Sticking to four neutrals and two colours is one way to go. Choose dark and light neutrals across classic and trendy styles. I chose a classic white blouse and citron pullover. I chose a trendy drape front blouse in grey, a fluid boat neck pullover in ink, a silk-front sweatshirt with a panel print in black, and an oversized avant-garde tunic in teal.

You can wear the oversized teal tunic semi-tucked at the side with the skirt. The patterned sweatshirt works with the patterned skirt and solid footwear, although throwing in the animal print flats is a fun addition. Wearing the plaid poncho over either of these ensembles will create an arty maximal outfit, which you might prefer to ground with solid black footwear and an ink bag.

Indoor Toppers

You have the option of leaving off indoor toppers, but most end up wearing them at some point during the day in cooler offices, especially over a lightweight blouse.

Choose an assortment of silhouettes, fabrics and colours. I chose three toppers and none of them are blazers. I made the black leather jacket the modern classic, and opted for two knitted toppers for extra comfort. A sweater jacket or tunic cardigan, and a plaid poncho wrap for a trendy touch.

Note that you can wear your outfit with the coat on the way to work, and leave the poncho and sweater jacket in the office to wear once you’ve removed your coat. They are often warmer and more comfortable than fitted blazers, and can look just as pulled together and chic.

Outdoor Topper

Choose a trendy or modern classic wool coat that fits over all the layers. Choose it in a neutral or colour.  Of course, you can use the indoor toppers as outerwear if the weather is mild, but you’ll probably need a warm coat for the commute. In some cases you’ll be able to layer the leather jacket under a roomy coat, and use the poncho as a gigantic scarf.

I chose a trendy ink wool man coat because it’s softer than black, and can work as a black coat. If wool coats aren’t sufficiently warm, wear a long puffer coat.

Footwear

Choose an assortment of silhouettes and colours. I chose a pair of high-vamped flats and pointy toe booties to amp up the trendy integrity of the capsule. The knee-high riding boots and pumps are modern classics. The black booties and pumps can be worn with all four bottoms, but the tall boots can only be worn with the skirt and Ponte pants. The flats can only be worn with three bottoms because the bootcut trousers have been hemmed for heels.

Black footwear is versatile for this capsule, but a little colour and pattern on a shoe helps to create more varied outfit options.

Accessories

You can stick to one bag for this capsule, but might like the variety of two. I chose a citron tote to lift the dark palette, but complemented it with an ink clutch when you’re not in the mood for a bright bag. Carrying a clutch inside a large tote is a great option for when you nip away from your desk, leaving the heavy tote behind while you carry the clutch.

A scarf in a pattern or colour keeps you warm and provides outfit interest on days when you want to wear a little pattern next to your face. I chose a polka dot scarf because it’s a particularly easy pattern to mix. A belt is a must when partially tucking tops into pants because it finishes off the outfit. I chose a black studded belt so that the simplest outfit created from this capsule will have textural interest. Add jewellery, watch, eyewear and headgear as desired.

Add onto this capsule with a pair of jeans for casual Fridays, or a dress to wear under the indoor toppers. Feel free to add a few more tops, perhaps in a pattern. Another coat, pair of patterned pants and black pumps would also be welcome.

Few people are able to purchase a capsule of this size at once. The point is that you use the capsule as a template for creating capsules from your own wardrobe, identifying and filling in the gaps so that you can create more outfits with existing wardrobe items.

It’s not easy or fast planning your wardrobe this way, but purchasing your career wear wardrobe in capsules is one way to ensure that you have an assortment of mix and match outfit possibilities on hand. Having several mix and match capsules in your closet allows you to pick and choose your outfits daily from different capsules, thereby ensuring ongoing variety.

Link Love: Fashionable Flats for 2015

I’ve been browsing the Pre-Fall 2015 collections, and am thrilled to see that many designers are embracing flat footwear: Joseph, Tibi, M.Patmos, Thom Browne, Elizabeth and James, Public School, Gucci (a mix of stunning flat and high-heeled oxfords), and Michael Kors among others. I’m hoping this means we’ll have plenty of beautiful flats to choose from in stores come Fall too.

I also enjoyed this Guardian article in which four women discuss how they won’t be going back to wearing high heels anytime soon, and talk about their favourite styles and brands of flat footwear.

Scent and My Style

It recently occurred to me that scented products play quite a big role in my grooming regimen. I use Nivea’s Orange Blossom Body Wash when I shower. I moisturize with Nivea Extended Moisture Body Lotion, which is a subtle scent that disappears after application. Powder Fresh Lady Speed Stick is my deodorant, and a spritz of Kenzo Flower Eau De Parfum finishes off my outfit.

I wash my hair with Pureology Perfect Platinum Shampoo and Conditioner. I style my hair with Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Perfect Blowout Creme and Redken Shape Factor Sculpting Cream Paste. And for very sentimental reasons, I use Jurlique Jasmine and Rose Hand Cream. My facial cleanser and moisturizer are fragrance-free.

I really do enjoy the whiff of a fresh floral or citrus fragrance. On some level, I equate the scent with feeling safe and loved because I would smell my Mama’s perfume when I cuddled up to her as a child. So it’s no surprise that these types of fragrances lift my mood and are comforting to me. I also feel fresher and more polished when I’m using scented products. For similar reasons I love the smell of Greg’s aftershave balm.

I am not allergic to scented products (neither is Greg), and I don’t work in a scent-free environment. To be considerate to those who are put off by strong fragrances, I’m sparing in my use of the eau de parfum. In the event that I know that someone I’m meeting during the day is allergic to scent or doesn’t like it, I don’t use any at all and I leave off my hand cream. If I worked in a scent-free environment, although I’d miss my scents, I would refresh my grooming regimen with a set of fragrance-free products.

When it comes to the scents other people wear, I enjoy them. But I’ve come to realize that I’m in the minority. So while I’m the first one to eagerly rip open the scent samples in fashion magazines, I’m also very conscious of the effect the scents I wear have on other people.

Over to you. Do you use scented products?

Roundup: Sleeved Dresses from Anthroplogie

There are some great new sleeved frocks at Anthropologie that look fresh. Wear them with hosiery and boots, or over skinny jeans or cigarette pants as a tunic. Pop a jacket or coat (or both) over the top and Bob’s your uncle.

  • Yael Dress: I loved the subtle pattern on this dress, which looks like a false plain. Formfitting but not clingy. Knitted, comfortable, and a good length.
  • Ondine Hanky Hem Shirtdress: A mauve and blush casual roomy high-low dress that's gorgeous with cognac accents. It's just fitted enough, and great with tall boots too.
  • Moonflower Dress: A structured '60s inspired shift that's fun to wear over skinny jeans.
  • Janie Swing Dress: Feminine and dressy in an on trend relaxed way. Great elbow-length sleeves.
  • Jersey Midi Dress: A fit-and-flare midi is beautifully '70s when worn with knee-high boots. It's fun with short booties for a "just flattering enough" effect.
  • Embroidered Peasant Dress: Boho fabness. Smocking looks quite fresh right now, and I like the red stitching. Can also be worn over black cigarette bottoms.
  • Modernity Silk Swing Dress: Mod, sack-like and dramatic. You have to be at peace with how the inside of the pattern shines through to the front from the back lower hem. Retro, graphic and modern.
  • Dori Cable Sweater Dress: The A-line silhouette on this sweater dress makes it quite flattering. Cozy and casual.
  • Homestead Shirtdress: I liked this dress best of all. The asymmetrical length drapes beautifully, and the flare swooshes in an elegant way when you stride. They also had me with the plaid.

It’s hard to find a casual dress with sleeves and sufficient hem length that doesn’t suck the living daylights out of you. Good job Anthroplogie for creating styles that fit the bill.

Urban Chic and Happy Colours

New York City-based Kelly Augustine (28) works in Non-Profit Communications and blogs about personal style over at Kelly Augustine. Her style is a mix of on trend casual looks and dressier fun feminine outfits. She is just as happy sporting head-to-toe black as she is rocking bright colours. Kelly likes to showcase her curves, loves statement jewellery, and enjoys experimenting with different hairstyles. She’s also not afraid of smiling in her pictures. The ultimate stylish touch!

“Over the last 5 years, my style has evolved immensely. I’ve learned to accept who I am and accept my body, and have fully embraced the right clothing for my body type. At the moment, I would describe my style as… comfortably me, both figuratively and literally. I am comfortable in who I am and dress to accommodate my mood, while dressing comfortably enough to navigate my NYC lifestyle. I’m always running around somewhere!”

Sporting head-to-toe black can sometimes look a little severe. Breaking up the black in subtle ways, like Kelly is doing here, is one way around that. Combining texture-rich fabrications like the leather skirt with a soft wool pullover, suede booties and sheer hosiery gives the look a lively lift. The black pencil skirt also has a self-pattern that reads like a stripe, which adds extra visual interest. The tucked sweater accentuates Kelly’s waist, while the midi skirt is a flattering length on our blogger. The gold hardware on the smooth leather satchel, and the gold studs and zipper on the booties create a bit of glitz that adds further textural interest. As do Kelly’s beautiful curls.

If you needed more proof that you can create a wonderful outfit with “just” a dress, then this is it. Going with hot pink is a statement in itself that doesn’t need extra bells and whistles. The pretty chiffon material gives the frock that happy “twirl factor”. The trellis-like neckline is a great way to create textural interest while staying covered up. Kelly likes to showcase her waistline, and used a wide marigold belt to reign in the volume of the dress. The sunny yellow is an unexpected colour accent that works beautifully with the bright pink. Pairing a just-above-the-knee hemline with low-vamped pointy-toe flats lengthens the legline. Notice how the gold metallic footwear doesn’t match but goes perfectly with the warm yellow of the belt. Dangly pearl earrings finish off this fun ladylike look.

Kelly’s made-to-order wrap coat is undoubtedly the star of this outfit. The full-skirted topper came with a fabric sash belt, which our blogger replaced with a black skinny belt with charming gold bow. It showcases Kelly’s waist, while the open shawl collar creates a long line that is flattering on a larger bust. The tailoring, bold geometric pattern, and Fall colours that seem to vary with the incidence of light, make it a work of art. Simple black jeggings and open-toed pumps balance out the volume up top. The cognac bag complements the rusty brown of the coat. An oversized chain link necklace in different shades of brown fills in the open neckline and makes an arty statement. Kelly’s long hair worn down and back fits the elegant vibe of this look.

Kelly enjoys experimenting with different hairstyles and likes to regularly change up her ‘do:

“I LOVE changing my hairstyle! My top tip for curly hair is to make sure it fits your lifestyle. When I’m on an active binge, I usually put my hair in braids/twists. When I want a longer look, I go for extensions. Again, it’s all about being comfortable. Fashion and style should never feel forced.”

The combination of the casual booties, tough edge leather jacket and luxurious stole makes for a great irregular outfit juxtaposition. Kelly is wearing a fitted moto jacket layered over a very cosy looking dress with subtle A-line. The sassy pinstripe creates an elongating effect. Black opaque tights provide warmth, and help to eliminate cutting horizontal lines when sporting ankle boots with a dress. Removing the leather jacket reveals a fun surprise: a double V-neckline that gives the whole an unexpected alluring touch. Adding a chic faux fur stole amps up the cosiness and texture factor. Coral lipstick and a bright blue watch play up the graphic black and white colour palette.

What a fab volume-on-volume look with cropped sweater. The waistband on the full midi skirt is fitted, and the bare midriff adds just enough structure to the outfit. The bright yellow sweater forms such a happy pairing with the colourful abstract print skirt. The coverage of the high neckline, elbow-length sleeves, and midi-length skirt balance out the bare midriff. Colour-loving Kelly throws in another bright colour with her footwear: orange-red jelly sandals that give this playful Summer look a quirky touch. Her breezy top knot, perfect for a warm day in the city, adds a ballerina-esque vibe. A geometric vintage necklace, simple gold cuff and stud earrings dress up the look. And, as always, Kelly’s genuine smile is her best accessory.

Kelly also likes to wear simpler outfits. Here she is rocking a pair of mid-blue skinnies with simple white top. Tucking the long-sleeved top accentuates our blogger’s curves. The scrunched skinnies cover the top part of the high-heeled booties to create a long leg line. Keeping the top and bottom simple allows the beautiful light grey plaid coat to shine. The colour also works beautifully with the taupe open toe booties. Our blogger’s luscious curls add playful charm. A modern cuff bracelet, silver ring with similar design, large pearl drop earrings and cherry red lipstick are the finishing touches.
