Petite Peplum Pizzazz

Freelance writer Glenda Harrison (49) lives in Southern California, and shares her thoughts on fashion and life over at So What to Twenty. Our 5’1″ blogger loves peplum tops, strapless dresses and flowy frocks. Her style is relaxed and polished with arty and dramatic touches. Glenda also likes drape, bright colours, statement belts and footwear, and she uses interesting jewellery to add extra personality to her impactful outfits.

“I believe my fashion taste is an extension of my overall style. The fashion part of Glenda isn’t a separate part of me, but a part of the total package that makes up Glenda’s style. To answer the question of whether or not my style has evolved, I’ll have to answer the question by saying that I, as a complete person have evolved in the past 5 years. The 40s have been very transformative years for me. I have become more in tune with myself and have discovered my value as a woman. I hope that my spirit translates through my writings and images on my blog. I want my readers to feel as if they know who I am without having had met me personally. My overall fashion aesthetic pretty much stays in tune with who I am as a person. I describe my style and my fashion sense as classic with a touch of bohemian and a bit of quirky. Yes, I love quality classics that stand the test of time, but I like to then combine a classic look with elements of bohemian and quirky to make the look less restraining, more interesting and mine. Since I’m a product of the 60s, that era seems to percolate through my veins. The bohemian spirit lives in me. I tell everyone that I think being a native Californian makes bohemian a part of my DNA. I always look for individuality. It could be the smallest detail, but if it’s unique and interesting, I tend to be quite attracted to it… that’s the quirky element.”

I call this look Casablanca Tomboy PI. The high-waisted wide leg trousers paired with flats are delightfully Katharine Hepburn-esque, while the cream trench adds Humprey Bogart flair. Tucking a fitted tee and belting the trousers creates waist definition and adds structure to the voluminous bottoms. The striped T-shirt gives this all neutrals outfit its playful vibe. The black and white are subtly picked up again in Glenda’s silver studded colour blocked Weejuns loafers. Cheeky fun. The midi trench is a lightweight fabric that collapses back onto the body, which helps temper the volume on our 5’1″ blogger. Silver jewellery and classic Ray-Bans finish off the look.

Glenda rocks a peplum top and sports them often. Here she’s picked one in a scuba material with two beautiful floral prints that strike me as a mix of an impressionist painting with a modern photographic print. The peplum section flows seamlessly into the flare of the full midi skirt, emphasizing the waistline and creating and elegant ladylike look. The top’s high neckline works well with Glenda’s super short ‘do and is the perfect canvas to showcase her large hoop earrings. Dainty sandals with thin double ankle straps echo the shine of the patent vintage clutch. Opting for a black bag and footwear allows the top to be the star of the show. A yellow cocktail ring adds arty spunk.

A Sporty Luxe look with a unique twist. The peplum waist and cut-out detail on the back of this sassy sweatshirt make for a very original piece. Glenda streamlines the volume of the extra roomy top by pairing it with rolled-at-the-ankle slim-fit jeans. Showcasing skin with the rolled sweater sleeves, open neckline and strappy sandals creates further structure. Grey with white always feels fresh for Summer. The sunny orange shoes and Missoni-esque chevron print wristlet add colourful punch. Our blogger has a knack for finding interesting jewellery, like this gold weighted ball pendant as the creative finishing touch.

Our blogger loves to sport strapless dresses, and this dramatic, Grecian-inspired flowy frock is a good one. With its billowy silhouette, asymmetric hemline, smocked bust and flouncy ruffles, this crisp white statement piece doesn’t need extra bells and whistles. The delicate necklace and watch, and small white clutch let the dress do all the talking, while the silver metallic lace-up sandals complement the Greek Goddess vibe.

When asked which Spring/Summer 2015 trends she is looking forward to sporting, Glenda said:

“I’ll always love a good gladiator inspired or tie-up sandal regardless if they’re trendy or not. I also love the cute little bohemian white dresses, and free-flowing Grecian dresses. Since I live in a warm climate, white is a staple in my wardrobe, as well as easy dressing. I recently wore an absolutely stunning, shocking yellow dress. When I wore this Grecian inspired dress I was reminded of the Valentino Spring/Summer 2015 show. That dress will be worn often.”

A loose-fit, dropped-waist peplum top that surrenders the waistline is a comfortable and breezy option for hot weather when you can’t stand feeling constricted by your clothing. Just like its waist-defining counterpart, this style works well over structured slim-fit bottoms. Glenda has a playful nautical vibe going on with the bright red jeans and blue and white stripes. The ruffled peplum hemline is feminine fun, the pointy toe silver ankle strap pumps further amp up the ladylike integrity. Small earrings and a silver bird lariat necklace, another great jewellery find, are the accessories of choice.

This graphic black and white outfit is proof that a long, flowing tunic can work on a petite frame. Glenda’s voluminous blouse is fitted on the shoulders and slightly shaped at the waist, which creates structure, before flaring out dramatically over leggings that streamline the look. The high-low assymetric hemline creates diagonal lines and outfit movement which adds extra structure. Sporting a low or high heel, like Glenda’s black strappy sandals, lengthens the legline. A vegan black crossbody that converts into a nifty little backpack is the perfect accompaniment to this arty eclectic look.

Rack Roundup: Breezy Pieces

Here’s a selection of well-priced items from the Nordstrom Rack that are fashionable and breezy for Summer. Although most of the items are neutral, they can be combined with coloured footwear, jewellery and handbags. The short dresses can be worn over leggings or skinny cropped jeans if the hem lengths are too short.

You can collect the items below, or visit the collection page to see the items alongside my descriptions.

Three Summer Capsules for my 77 Year Young Client

I have several clients who are in their seventies, and I absolutely LOVE working with them. They’re graceful, positive, confident, wise, energetic and have lots of verve. I’m on a huge high when I come back from a work session with these clients because I find them extremely inspiring.

I shopped with a delightful client last week who, as she puts it, is “77 years young”. My client is petite, but we had no problem shopping regular sizes. She is an active busy bee who leads a very casual lifestyle. She likes bright colours, lighter neutrals for Summer, and very comfortable clothing. She much prefers pants and jeans to skirts and dresses. She also runs cold, so toppers are a necessity most of the time.

Our shopping goal: To create a few mix-and-match capsules for a Seattle Spring and Summer that she could wear right now and in future seasons. We wanted to create complete outfits during our shopping session so that it would be easy for my client to transition into her refreshed look. We shopped at Nordstrom, Zara and Banana Republic, and were done in three and a half hours.

We put together three capsules. The orange, red and white was the largest. The black and white was next, and the olive capsule was the smallest. Here are two “work in progress” photos in the Nordstrom dressing room. With one exception all of these items followed my client home.

Dressing Room

A few points upfront:

  • Apart from the handbag, denim jacket and orange sweeping cardigan, the items in these capsules are the EXACT pieces that we bought
  • My client had a stone tote and denim jacket in her existing wardrobe that became essentials for these capsules.
  • We bought a different Nic & Zoe drape front cardigan in a shade of watermelon, which you can see in the photos but is not available online.
  • There is only one pair of shoes because my client had a pair of white low wedge peep-toe booties and fashion sneakers to use with these outfits.
  • We viewed the items in terms of three separate capsules, but the items can also be remixed with items across all three capsules.
  • Sleeveless tops were fine as long as they could be covered with a topper.
  • My client is happy to mix two bright colours together in one outfit.
  • Although we only bought one pair of white jeans, they’re represented in all three capsules. My client might duplicate them because they work well for her lifestyle.

Orange Capsule

We bought two pairs of ankle length NYDJ jeans in red and white that can be rolled at the hem for a breezy and fashionable look (my client is not comfortable in shorts). We paired them with an assortment of knitted tops that can be worn untucked and easily layered with a cardigan or jacket. The curved hemlines of the tops were important in order to create a flattering effect when worn out over jeans.

The white tank top is thick and functions like a T-shirt. It can be worn under the drape front watermelon cardigan and the coral knitted tab sleeve shirt. The orange Zara blazer is for dressier occasions, and looks amazing over the ink blue Zara two-tone T-shirt or Nic & Zoe printed top with white jeans. Both tops look equally great under the watermelon drape cardigan. The blue denim jacket works equally well as a topper in this capsule.

My client is a dark blonde, making Munro’s ultra comfy Abbey slingback booties in a golden taupe a brilliant bookending tool. She can wear them with every outfit we created, it was that easy.

Black, White and Blue Capsule

We fell in love with Vince Camuto’s fun palm tree printed skinnies because they were an excellent full-length fit, working well with my client’s curves and her preference for a higher rise. They look great with black, white and blue tops, so we repeated the knitted tab sleeve shirt and tank top in black, and added Eileen Fisher’s bateau neck linen sweater in a dark turquoise. We also added a black and white micro striped drape cardigan, which can be worn over both black and white tank tops, as well the turquoise linen sweater. The denim jacket is an extra topper option here too.

The black top, turquoise sweater and striped cardigan here look just as smashing with the red jeans from the orange capsule. And the ink blue Zara two-tone T-shirt from the orange capsule looks great with the palm tree skinnies from this capsule. The denim jacket is an extra topper option just in case.

Olive Capsule

We built the final smaller and more trendy capsule at Banana Republic, which was extra fun. My client has light green eyes which shone like gemstones in this shade of olive. We matched the textured blue slim-fit ankle pants with two tops. An olive high-low silk blouse and a fashionable dropped shoulder orange sweater — both with round hems to look good when worn untucked. We topped the outfits off with a boxy utility jacket in the same shade of olive.

Of course, the blue ankle pants can be worn with all the tops, both cardigans, and the orange jacket in the first two capsules. The white and red jeans can be worn with the olive and orange tops from this capsule. And the olive jacket looks great over all the tops.

We took photos of the outfit combinations for easy reference as we put together the capsules in stores. It looks like my client might bottle neck with the solid black and white tops, but she had a few extras at home that she could remix into these capsules. She also has a pair of dark cobalt jeans that she could add to the black and white capsule.

My client was delighted with her many casual and smart casual outfits for our mild Summer weather in Seattle. She definitely bats for Team Wear because the next day she wore her new white jeans rolled at the hems with the olive silk blouse, olive jacket and taupe gold sandals out to a luncheon with friends. She received many compliments and felt fantastic. She’s also having a ball selecting the combination she’s going to wear next. With happy tears in my eyes, ladies, you are NEVER too old to have fun with fashion

Playful Allure with Open-Back Top

A new outfit from Medge Beauvoir from My Voguish Diaries, who we introduced to YLF in December 2014.

Matching a curve-hugging pencil skirt with an untucked drapey top effectively de-bombshells the look. Picking a top that partially exposes the back adds back in a playfully alluring touch. The high-low hemline paired with the knee-length skirt creates flattering proportions on our petite blogger. The sleeveless style and knit fabrication of both pieces keeps things breezy and comfortable for Summer. A statement necklace, gold watch and patent wide-strap sandals dress up this casual look. Medge’s nonchalant side braid and the high neckline on the front of the top allow the back to really shine. Bright orange-red lipstick adds extra punch.

Clever tip from Medge: Safety pin the inside flap to your bra if you don’t want to feel too exposed with the top flying open.

Warm Versus Cold Weather Outfit Variety

It recently occurred to me that there is a lot more variety in my Spring and Summer style than there is in my Autumn and Winter style. In Spring and Summer (when we have a proper Spring that doesn’t feel like Winter), I wear skirts, dresses, blouses, shirts, open-weave knitwear, Spring cashmere, jackets, pumps, loafers, oxfords, ankle strap pumps, pointy toe flats and ankle strap flats along with all sorts of jeans, pants and cropped pants silhouettes.

This is tremendous variety compared to my Autumn and Winter style which consists of jeans, trousers, pullovers, heavier weight jackets, coats and booties. I do not wear skirts and dresses, because no matter how I try to stay warm with hosiery, I’m still too cold. I also need to wear footwear with cozy socks to feel comfortably warm, which means booties are my best bet. And I don’t wear pumps or loafers in Autumn and Winter because I prefer those styles of footwear without socks. The wet weather limits my jeans and trouser silhouettes to tapered hems, restricting my outfit variety even further.

I’m too practical by nature to not dress in a way that isn’t sufficiently comfortable and warm,  but I DO want more variety for what is actually my dominant season and have a few ideas for how I’m going to do that this year.

First, I would love to get a few pairs of knee-high boots. For years I have been looking for a non-stretchy, non-black, fashionable and tailored pair of boots to fit a 13 inch calf circumference. I’m seriously thinking of having a pair of authentic riding boots custom made in a rich shade of brown. At this stage it might be my best option, as well as a nod to the equestrian aspect of my style persona.

Second, I’ll be on the sharp lookout for more variety in jeans, trousers and knitwear. Perhaps I’ll find some comfortable mid-calf boots to fit that aren’t casual and rugged. A coat in a shade of pastel would also be fab.

Over to you. Does your warm weather style also have more variety than your cold weather style? And are you happy with this level of variety.
