Link Love: Australian Stylewatch

I’m enjoying The Guardian’s Oz Stylewatch series, and wanted to share three pieces I found particularly interesting:

This article explains why it is so hard to find Australian-made shoes.

“Starting a fashion label in Australia is notoriously risky. Starting a footwear label is even harder. The production is more expensive; the makers are harder to find and more selective about who they’re willing to work with. Unless footwear craftsmanship becomes a hot new trade to learn, the mid-range shoe shortage isn’t going to change.”

Alyx Gorman explains how “office-ish” clothing is the new trend for Australia’s growing creative sector.

“This kind of clothing is office-ish. It takes workwear staples such as shirts and tailoring but changes the proportions and prints into something too quirky to pass for conventional business gear.”

Luxurious, bathrobe-esque coats are apparently the latest must-have for the Australian Winter, and have “muscled their way to ‘staple’ status”.

“Finally, a luxuriant bathrobe is a status symbol the high street cannot replicate. Without Max Mara’s specially milled cashmeres and wools (the real deal will cost you between $1,700 to upwards of $8,000, depending on fabrication and your fondness for fur trims), or Guo Pei’s yards of fur, these garments would be plain old cereal-and-milk encrusted dressing gowns. In a rich textile, the style is dangerous and beguiling, it begs ‘touch me’. It suggests you know what you’re doing. In a poly-wool blend, it simply says: ‘I have given up on wearing real clothes’.”

“Shopping has to be fun,” Boscov said. “It’s not that you need anything. Shopping is entertainment and should be fun, and we have to remember that.” Vildy loved this quote from the chain store’s CEO Jim Boscov, and adds that she recently visited one of their department stores and thought it was delightful.

Watermelon Birthday Lace

Although I’m working a hectic shift helping clients with their preselections at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I’m wearing this outfit all day. Yes, it’s a formal dress, but it’s my birthday and reason enough to wear whatever I want. I turned 45 years young today and feel fabulous.

It’s tradition that Greg helps me purchase my birthday outfit and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Shopping with him for my gift is part of the present and extra fun. This year we went shopping in London while on our trip. The outfit that I chose for my birthday was L.K. Bennett’s Wardour Lace Overlay Dress in a happy shade of watermelon. My in-house fashion stylist said it’s the prettiest dress he’s seen me wear, which was of course welcome validation. In two ticks the dress was mine — the only one left and just in my size — and I couldn’t wait to wear it.

I don’t wear formal dresses all that often, but when I do, I absolutely LOVE them. There is something special about wearing an exquisitely made dress that makes me feel like a million bucks. And the quality of this dress is sublime. The lace is weighty, but super soft. The lining is made of a lustrous crepe. Some of the seams are French, while others are beautifully bound with piping. There is twill tape on the inside of the black slit and an extra placket on the inside of the zipper. Truly, the finish on this dress is so impeccable that you could wear it inside out.

The fit is tailored but not too tight, and there is ample length on the sleeves and hem. The style has a high longevity factor because it’s a modern classic, and the colour alone will keep me interested in wearing it. This was the perfect birthday dress.

The contrast grey lining of the dress effectively dulls the colour of the lace. It’s also why I chose to wear silver grey ankle strap pumps with the frock. When trying the dress on in the dressing room, I thought I’d need to buy light grey heels to match the lining. But all I needed to do was shop my closet for the perfect pair of grey heels, which are very comfortable to boot. The fact that they’re a few seasons old puts a spring in my step because I like outfits that remix old pieces with new ones.

Birthday Lace - Jacket

I combined the dress and shoes with a very special light blue Radley London handbag. It was a gift from my brother Hugo and sis-in-law Keri when I went shopping with them in London. I’ve been looking for the right light blue bag for a while. The colour is versatile — much like faded denim — so it’s going to work well in my wardrobe.

I like this outfit best without a topper because it allows the lace and the colour to shine. But since I’ll be working in air conditioning all day I’ll need a jacket. Greg, my in-house stylist, chose an old cropped and fitted Diesel denim jacket as the topper. He has a thing for denim jackets so it’s no wonder that he liked this combination best. The denim effectively dresses down the formality of the frock, which is a good idea for my workday. But when I wear this dress again in a fortnight for a fancy 60th birthday party, I’ll be topping it off with something more dressy.

Nordstrom Roundup: Comfy Lace-Up Sandals

Sandals with lace-up vamp detailing are a fringe trend. The flat styles look particularly Greek and Romanesque. This style of sandal fits a range of foot widths because you can adjust the position of the laces. Tie them tighter for low volume feet, or looser for high volume feet. My initial reaction to seeing this style was that they would be uncomfortable. But I was very wrong. If the leather and laces are soft, and the footbed is cushioning, then they are surprisingly comfortable.

Here’s a selection of trendy and comfy lace-up sandals, most of which I’ve tried on my own feet. Choose your favourite heel height and browse through all the colour options.

Bold Statuesque Style

London-based Marsha Campbell writes about life and fashion over at Style of a London Tall Girl. Our 6 feet tall blogger is a jewellery maximalist who mixes Modern Classics with on trend items and arty pieces. Her style is bold, ladylike and polished. She sports bright colours and neutrals with equal pizzazz, loves to accentuate her waist, and has an amazing eye for colour and impactful outfit combinations.

Marsha - 1

Marsha loves to accentuate her waistline, and the self belt on this bold striped kimono-esque blouse makes it easy to do just that. The blouse flares out nicely over black skinny jeans. Notice how the skinny fit tempers the volume of the bell sleeves. Marsha picked a cropped tweed jacket, in a hard to find mint green, to throw over the outfit. It adds Chanel chic to the outfit, and works well with the green, blue and white stripes. Cobalt blue sandals with lace-up detail bookend the sunglasses and pick up the blue in the striped top. A statement necklace in lime and khaki doesn’t match but complements the main colour palette. The earthy fringed clutch brings a touch of Boho to the look, the black hat and mirrored sunnies add playful drama.

I call this one Arty Chanel Girl. Marsha has a knack for finding interesting pieces. Here she’s paired a sleeveless sage green top with eye-catching floral print trousers. The top’s funnel neckline, asymmetrical hemline, and rather rigid fabrication create strong architectural lines, which are further emphasized by the black obi belt. The voluminous pleated trousers — don’t they have a fun bloomers feel to them — taper to the calf, which reins in the volume. The large-scale antique floral print against the dark background make them even more dramatic. Our blogger is a jewellery maximalist, and accessorized this look accordingly. A pearl bracelet, pearl earrings and shiny brooch channel her inner Chanel girl. A big link bracelet and partly transparent cuff on the other arm add more bling. The classic Channel bag, a casually draped white moto jacket and pointy-toe sci-fi silver flats finish off this ladylike look.

A white suit feels powerful and timeless to me. It’s eye-catching on its own, but Marsha amps up the oomph factor with cleverly chosen colours. The single button blazer hits at the hip, and is tailored longer in the torso to perfectly fit tall ladies. The matching cropped trousers with tapered hems draw the eye to our blogger’s fun green pumps that are an exact colour match for the structured satchel. Pairing the white suit with a zingy animal print blouse in orange and turquoise is unexpected. Adding a yellow Winter coat is more proof that Marsha knows her way around a stunning colour palette. The coat’s fuzzy fabric creates cosy textural interest. The silver bib necklace worn over the fully buttoned blouse, and Marsha’s beloved Chanel brooch add shine. Her bright pink lippie and neon pink nail polish are the unexpected maximal finishing touches.

Marsha - 4

The unusual colour combo is the first thing that caught my eye. Soft, feminine and elegant. Marsha is sporting a blush turtleneck sweater over a pleated faux leather knee-length skirt in cognac. The chunky knit paired with the perforated material of the skirt creates unique textural interest. Our blogger reins in the volume of the big sweater by scrunching the sleeves and belting it with a colour blocked waist bag that cleverly picks up the colours in her outfit. Blush pointy-toe pumps echo the colour of the sweater. Tucking her long locks inside the collar streamlines the look. A pink twisted rope embellished necklace, big link bracelet and burgundy Panama hat also complement the soft colour palette. Marsha’s bright pink lipstick is a sassy finishing touch.

These white denim flares make 6 feet tall Marsha’s legs go on forever. Hurrah for perfect pant lengths! She’s wearing the jeans with a mid-thigh length A-line tunic with quirky palm leaf print that makes the white look extra crisp. This time, Marsha accentuated her waist by knotting a thin gold braided belt. Keeping her triple row necklace, link bracelet, on trend leaf ear cuff, and pointy toe pumps gold gives the look an extra Summer-y feel. Putting up her hair in a top knot and sporting big sunnies further emphasizes that effect. Draping a versatile denim jacket over her shoulders adds a nonchalant touch. Plus, the blue denim works well with Marsha’s oversized envelope clutch.

What a happy explosion of colour and pattern! The big poncho is the star of the show with all the other pieces working together to create a gorgeous impactful look. The elbow-length sleeves and side slits balance out the volume of the poncho. Wearing it over a simple white tee and skinny jeans does the same. Marsha makes mixing four different patterns — a tartan scarf, Aztec print topper, patchwork jeans and graphic grid print bag — look like a piece of cake. Picking one dominant colour combo, red, white and black, pulls together the entire look. Bookending the vibrant tomato red Chelsea boots with a stylish red Panama hat creates visual harmony.

I’m very curious to hear what your favourite outfit is. Let us know in the comments, and be sure to hop on over to Marsha’s blog to browse the rest of her fab outfits.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is Almost Here

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale always generates a lot of excitement. Many YLF readers love the fact that unlike typical end of season sales, the NAS offers merchandise from the upcoming Fall and Winter season at discounted prices. But not everyone can shop at Nordstrom, so this year we’re creating a special area in the forum for NAS conversations.

NAS preselections (or “Early Access”) is starting on July 9th and ending on July 16th. If you have a Nordstrom card you can book a preselection appointment with a Nordstrom sales associate. The official start date is July 17th and the sale will run for two weeks before the prices of brand new Fall & Winter merchandise go back up. I’ll be posting my top picks lists on the blog early on the morning of July 17th.

The NAS is a great opportunity to get some quality items at discounted prices. Of course, lower prices are never a reason to buy items you wouldn’t have otherwise added to your wardrobe. All the tips I mentioned in this old post from 2009 still apply.
