Colour, Pattern, and Statement Jewellery

Psyche Southwell (36) is a poverty researcher and style contributor living in St. Louis, who documents her outfits on Economy of Style. Her style is Modern Classic, Preppy and feminine with the occasional mod touch. Our blogger is an expert pattern mixer who can’t resist a good print. She’s into statement jewellery and sporting her favourite pieces as often as possible. As a budget-conscious shopper, she is also a big believer in high-low style. Her beautiful curls and radiant smile are an integral part of her look.

“At the core, my style is classic. I build my wardrobe around timeless staples, and I make them my own by playing with color, print, and statement accessories. These days, I’m more inclined to push the envelope when it comes to my personal styling.

Psyche’s windowpane print trapeze top is the centrepiece of this polished casual look. The tiered layers make it extra interesting and more voluminous. The volume is toned down by pairing it with dark wash skinny jeans. The fitted, hip-length cardigan also streamlines the outfit, and is a great way to transition a Summer blouse into Fall. The cobalt blue pops against the white. Opting for dark red suede pumps creates an even richer colour palette. Currant lippie, a girly floral print clutch and statement mixed resin pendant earrings subtly add more colour and pattern.

Swingy peplum tops are a staple in Psyche’s wardrobe. They fit her feminine and fun style persona to a T. This flirty chambray number has cuffed elbow-length sleeves and a roomy, but not oversized fit above the bustline, which creates structure. The pleated peplum then tapers out over slim-fit shorts, which also adds visual balance. When browsing Pysche’s blog, you’ll quickly notice that she adores patterned footwear, and these fun fabric d’Orsay flats are just one example from her wonderful collection. The all-blue colour palette is complemented by an arty stone grid necklace in white, a big tortoise sport watch, bright fuchsia lipstick and cute colour splash clutch.

A borrowed-from-the-boys look that’s brilliant in its simplicity. Psyche built this high-low look around a well-fitting tailored Theyskens Theory blazer that she found on deep sale. She’s wearing it over a simple fitted white tee and black slim-fit ankle-length pants. A sleek silhouette that fits the menswear vibe perfectly. Black patent loafers add subtle sheen. Our blogger’s fabulous curls add lots of pizzazz. As always, Psyche’s accessories game is on point too. The chain strap on the citron clutch echoes the arty gold-toned rings Psyche is sporting on both hands. The eye-catching spiky bracelet adds refined hard edge. A silver chocker necklace and sunburst stud earrings add subtle bling up top. Bright lipstick and our blogger’s beautiful smile are the stylish finishing touches.

Psyche is an expert pattern mixer with a great eye for colour and proportions. Just looking at this vivid tomato red paired with the striped bag and marvelous floral print satin pumps makes me smile from ear to ear. The pleated midi hits our 5’4″ blogger just below the knee. Tucking the V-neck tee lengthens the leg line. The high-heeled pumps do the same. Wearing the dressy skirt with a simple tee and cheeky denim jacket is a fun way to casualize this red, white, and blue look. And notice how Psyche is wearing the same jewellery as in the previous outfit. She’s a huge fan of frequently sporting her favourite accessories. Here’s to Team Repeat!

When asked which Fall/Winter 2015 trend she is looking forward to the most, Psyche said:

“I’m most excited about the new approaches to pattern play (really unusual mixes of prints) and the apparent global influences on that trend. I plan to have fun experimenting with unexpected combinations using old and new additions to my closet.”

The peplum top from outfit two makes another appearance. This time, Psyche wore it for a trip to NYC. Comfort and practicality were key, so she paired it with black Ponte knit pants and fun flat ankle strap sandals. The chambray blouse is a statement piece that allows for plenty of movement, which makes it a great item to travel in. The white and black speckled part of the sandals adds some patterned fun to the mix (and matches Psyche’s gorgeous doggy). Our blogger’s toenail polish echoes the cobalt blue tote. Nice detail! The cuff bracelet and tribal-inspired bell pendant are the accessories du jour. Psyche’s curls and pink lipstick are the feminine finishing touches.

We can’t see the outfit underneath, but I picked this mod-inspired look to demonstrate what a huge impact outerwear and fab Winter accessories can have on your overall style. Psyche’s gorgeous colour blocked coat is undoubtedly the star of the show. The tailored A-line style fits her perfectly. The navy, orange, hot pink and grey colour combo is unusual and will brighten the dreariest Winter day. The leather toggle closures are a chic detail. Psyche’s pattern mixing talent comes out to play once again. The abstract print scarf works beautifully with the “stripes” of the coat because she’s kept all the colours in the same family. Her magenta lipstick and crocheted beanie also fit the bright colour palette, while the knit adds textural interest. Shiny rain boots and leather gloves with contrast stitching, both in a rich plum, are the playfully elegant finishing touches.

I’m curious to hear if you can pick a favourite outfit. Let us know in the comments, and be sure to browse the rest of Psyche’s marvelous outfits over at Economy of Style. Or check out what inspires her on Pinterest.

Greg’s Anniversary Sale Purchases

Greg doesn’t like to shop for himself, but he does like to wear nice clothes. So when I had some time in between client appointments at the NAS, I popped into the men’s section. To put things into context, Greg wears dark colours like black, charcoal, chocolate brown, ink and navy 95% of the time. He does have white jeans, a few white shirts, red Converse and cream Converse, and likes to wear those items too. He leads a very casual lifestyle because he works from home. He prefers to have fewer better-end items. Greg wears his stuff for ages. He is still wearing a few excellent quality shirts that we bought when we lived in France twelve years ago.

I came home with six items and three of them were winners. It does not come as a surprise that these were his favourites. Hugo Boss features prominently in his wardrobe and Theory is gaining momentum.

  • Theory 'Zack Ps.Azure' Trim Fit Plaid Sport Shirt: The fabric is SCRUMPTIOUS. Gorgeous lightweight cotton that "feels wet", it's that crisp and soft. The fit is quite slim through the torso, but ample on the shoulders, which is great for Greg's broad shoulder line. The length is quite short when worn out, which is excellent for Greg's 5 feet 9 inches. The pattern is an unusual check. Definitely a dressier casual shirt, but not a dress shirt.
  • Theory 'Zack Ps.Corvo' Trim Fit Gingham Sport Shirt: AMAZING fabric. The crispness of cotton that feels luxurious and cool against the skin. I wish I could find shirts made of this fabric. Fit is broad through the shoulder and slimmer through the torso. Too short for tall men.
  • Boss 'Maine 2' Check Five-Pocket Pants: A brilliant pair of lightweight microchecked blue trousers that are dressier than jeans but more casual than dress pants. A trendy pair of chinos. Wear them rolled at the hem or with a regular hem. Might run a size small.

Greg will wear the shirts untucked with a black undergarment tee, pairing them with his assortment of funky distressed jeans. He’ll top off the look with an edgy black denim jacket from All Saints or his blue one from Kenneth Cole, or one of his trusty Hugo Boss nylon or leather jackets. He also has a great selection of sports blazers that he used to wear a lot, but he’s been off them for a while, favouring his shorter toppers or wool coats.

He’ll probably finish off the outfits with his brand new pair of Dr. Martens Louis Gusset Slip Ons, which we bought over the weekend at the Dr. Martens store. The slip-ons will also look good with the new checked pants paired with a solid black shirt, zip-top or sleek pullover with leather trim.

The Return of the Dressy Jean

Many of my clients are bringing dressier jeans back into their wardrobes this year, which makes complete sense. It seems that our “everyday” jeans are becoming more distressed by the season because it’s fashionable to sport that look. It’s also fashionable to create a dramatic juxtaposition of items in your outfit — like combining shredded jeans with an ultra dressy top, jacket and pair of shoes. And to top it all, the baggy boyfriend jeans trend makes already distressed jeans even more casual. As a result, many of my clients are feeling sloppy and not so fab in their trendy jeans unless they are in very casual settings.

Enter the dressy jean to fill an unexpected wardrobe hole. It’s the kind of bottom that some of my business casual clients can wear to work on casual Fridays. Clients with less strict dress codes can wear them to work a few times a week. Or they can wear them smart casually out to dinner, for get-togethers with friends and family, or when they travel and want to look a little dressier than they would in sports gear.

In our age of casualization, it can be inappropriate to look overly dressed in some settings. Dressy jeans are a good solution because they are casual, but not too casual. Dress them up further with a nice top, shoes, bag, and perhaps a jacket, and you’ve put the smart back into casual.

My clients’ preferences for dressy jeans run the gamut, but they all have two things in common — the fit is tailored and there are no rips and shreds in the denim. Lighter wash blue denim is fine, as long as the wash is fairly even across the garment. Medium and dark blue denim washes with straight legs and flared legs have been popular, as have skinny or straight black, white, red, burgundy and coated jeans. The collection below provides examples of the styles of dressy jeans my clients have been purchasing recently.

I discovered this exact wardrobe hole last year and purchased the dramatic J. Brand Love Story Jeans. I loved them so much that I had to get a pair of white flared jeans too. Weather permitting, both pairs of dressier jeans are my go-to for dinners out, get-togethers with friends, and some client appointments. Who else is in the mood for dressier jeans?

Metallic Blues

A new outfit from Valerie Husemann of Simple et Chic, whom we introduced to YLF in November 2014.

The metallic fringed clutch and oversized denim jacket make this polished casual look. The roomy acid wash topper is ’80s fun, the bag playfully Boho-Lite, which makes for a fab outfit juxtaposition against the dressy trousers. Together with the pointy toe pumps, the pleated and tapered pants add structure to the volume up top. The sci-fi silver clutch has a blue tinge to it that makes all the other blues come to life. Valerie’s orange red lipstick further amps up the vibrancy.

What I Bought While Travelling in June

In June we visited family and friends in the Netherlands and England. Not being light travellers, we popped our suitcases in the hold. So we had plenty of room to bring back treasures for our home, our snack cupboard and of course, our wardrobes. I LOVE bringing back pieces from our travels because they’re usually unique and a reminder of happy times. Closet souvenirs are the best.

I should mention that these purchases exceeded my normal monthly budget quite significantly, but some of them were birthday gifts and I also set aside some money for travel purchases just because it’s an opportunity to get something different.

I brought back ten items: One pair of jeans, one denim jacket, two dresses, two handbags, a wallet, two pairs of shoes, and a pair of sunglasses. All carefully chosen over the space of four weeks to replace items that no longer work, fill wardrobe holes, and refresh my style.

  1. G-Star Elwood Skinny Jeans: G-Star is a Dutch brand, so it was appropriate that I purchase these from their home base. Having lived in boyfriend jeans for three years, and being a bit tired of the silhouette in blue denim, I needed to refresh my skinnies capsule. I chose a pair that are described as “white painted” — a mottled shade of bone. The asymmetrical zipper is fab, and the moto jeans styling is softened by the colour.
  2. J Brand Classic Light-Wash Jean Jacket: At first I was dead set against purchasing J Brand in Amsterdam because it’s something I can get back home. But when this pretty powder blue denim jacket with extraordinary WHITE BUTTONS was the only one left in my size, fit perfectly, and was on sale, I saw it as a sign that it had to be mine. It was also a great way to remember my super fun shopping day with Inge and forum member Approprio.
  3. Bradly Chain Crossbody Bag: I am not into crossbody bags because I typically find them uncomfortable, so this is a wild card. It came from a bespoke boutique in the Negen Straatjes in Amsterdam called the “Amsterdam Bag Company”. I was drawn to the tomato red right away and loved the gold hardware. I learned that I do like crossbody bags as long as they’re small and lightweight. That way they don’t feel uncomfortable on my neck and shoulders.
  4. Ray-Ban RB2180 Sunglasses: I’ve been looking for another pair of sunnies all year, but nothing fit the bill until I went back to trying on Ray-Bans at Schiphol airport on our way to London. Clearly I’m a Ray-Bans gal because they’re the sunnies that fit and look the best by far. I chose a fashionable oversized round pair in a classic brown tortoise shell. They were also on sale. Score.
  5. L.K. Bennet Wardour Lace Overlay Dress: Greg bought me a watermelon lace dress with silver grey lining for my birthday. We found it at an L.K. Bennet store in Kingston, close to where my brother lives. It was also the only one left in my size and on sale. It’s the most perfect Summer birthday dress.
  6. Furla Wallet: I regretted not getting a turquoise wallet to match my Furla bag when I bought it in Hong Kong earlier this year. Then I found this gorgeous citron Furla wallet on sale in London. I’ve been after a smaller size wallet for a while because it will work better with my smaller bags. Every time I open my bag and see the pop of citron it makes me happy.
  7. Clarks Chinaberry Ice Ankle Strap Pumps: I’m always on the lookout for comfortable dressy shoes because my Okala pumps won’t last forever. As a lover of ankle straps, I was drawn to this pair of snakeskin pumps at a Clarks store in London. I like their trendy ‘90s low block heel and their amazing comfort factor. I’m a pointy toe gal, so the square toe is a bit of a departure for me. Another wild card. I love them, and as Greg said, they look modern. I wore these all day last week to preselect with clients at the NAS and they passed the comfort test with flying colours.
  8. COS Cotton Shirtdress: Adding more tomato red to my wardrobe was one of my style goals this year, as was getting an on-trend casual shirtdress. Originally, I wanted a fitted and belted style in a bright colour. But when I saw this ‘80s rendition, I changed my mind. The crisp cotton textured fabric “feels wet” and is amazingly soft. And since we’re having a lovely hot Summer in Seattle, this will NOT be orphaned.
  9. Gabor Gibson Perforated Zip Detail Flat Oxfords: These are possibly the most comfortable Summer shoes I’ve ever had on my feet. They are more comfortable than the white sneakers I bought last year. I prefer to wear closed shoes in the Summer so these are perfect for our current hot weather. Breezier than the white loafers and sneakers. They match my upscale white backpack and look great with the the COS dress and moto jeans.
  10. Radley Millbank Leather Multiway Bag: I’ve had a light blue bag on my shopping list for while because it’s a versatile colour (much like faded denim). You can’t get Radleys in Seattle, so this one piqued my interest. This was a birthday gift from my brother and his wife, and it’s perfect.

We’ve been back for three weeks and I’ve put all of these items to good use already. The wallet was christened right away. I’ve worn the denim jacket, white oxfords and both bags multiple times already because they’re very versatile. The sunglasses went into rotation as soon as I’d added prescription lenses. I’ve worn the COS dress a few times, but the jeans only once because it’s been unseasonably hot here in Seattle. And my lace dress will get its second outing for a fancy do this week.

I couldn’t be more pleased with my new items, especially since some of them are wild cards. My style is evolving and it feels good to have bought items that are a little different from my norm.
