My Favourite YLF Moments of 2015

We’ll be slowing things down this week as I recap our year of fashion and style. First up are my favourite YLF moments, of which there are of course too many to count. But five stick out most in my mind.

The New Look YLF

YLF started the next leg of its style journey with a completely refreshed design. I love the typeface, blue header and picture-rich visual integrity. The new design’s modern, simple and friendly aesthetic makes me smile each time I use it, which is about a million times a day.

We made another big change later in the year, removing banner ads for logged in members. And members who would like to support the ongoing maintenance and development of YLF can become patrons. We haven’t reached the point where the support from patrons compensates completely for lost ad revenue, but it does feel very good to offer an ad free option.

Three International YLF Gatherings

Greg and I did a lot of international travel this year, and were welcomed with open arms by YLF’ers across the globe. The international nature of YLF is one of my favourite things about it, because our diverse backgrounds, cultures and personas are uniquely, unconditionally, and effortlessly united through fashion and style. That’s a gift that enriches my life more than I ever imagined.

We met members of the YLF community in Hong Kong, Amsterdam and London this year. The Amsterdam gathering was small, but very powerful. Liz, Inge and I marched up and down those cobbled streets like there was no tomorrow. We soaked up the style, bought treasures along the way, ate to our heart’s content, laughed up a storm, and yakked till the cows came home. It was SO much fun.

The London gathering was special in many ways. Inge and Liz travelled from Amsterdam and Antwerp to have a ball all over again. Other fabbers travelled from within the UK, Paris and Tel Aviv. With us coming through from Seattle it was indeed a global effort. We walked till our feet gave in, ate till our tummies burst, laughed till our cheekbones hurt, and enjoyed each other’s banter for hours and hours. The warmth, wit and wisdom of the women made it a brilliant day.

Sharing My Travel Capsule

Although I am an experienced packer, this was the first time that I shared exactly what I packed and wore on one of our trips. We documented my outfits on the go for an entire month as we visited family and friends in the Netherlands and England. The trip spanned a range of temperatures, activities and locations, which kept things interesting. The photo shoots in all sorts of new places kept photographer Greg happy and motivated. The capsule, the reasoning behind what I packed, and the way I remixed the outfits was well received by our readers, making it a worthwhile effort.

The Forum Fashion Era Challenge

I challenged our forum members to create outfits that were inspired by their favourite fashion eras. So over the course of three weeks, many of our forum members did just that. They pulled out vintage pieces, wore wigs, did their hair, adjusted their make-up, and played dress up with the best of them. It was sublime, and I didn’t want the challenge to end. Our members covered most fashion eras and did it with panache. It was hard to pick a favourite but I’m going with the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s renditions because they are closest to my heart. And I’m demanding an encore for 2016.

Our Photo Shoot With Sam

Our eight month old Yorkie Sam is a natural in front of the camera. His photo shoot at home showcasing his holiday ensembles brought out his sweet disposition, playful persona and mischievous streak. It was an absolute joy prepping and styling our pint size pup with big personality. Sam is as adorable as it gets.

To cap things off, YLF recently passed 170,000 likes on Facebook, which is a lovely way to end the year.

What were your favorite YLF moments of 2015?

Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale: Designer Items

I was browsing through the Nordstrom sale and these designer items caught my eye. Many of the pieces are neutral, which tends to be the norm with designer wear these days. So if you’re a neutral gal, scour those sales racks.

There is lots more on sale across ALL price points, so be sure to browse through all the items when you have a moment.

Sam’s Holiday Capsule

The holidays are special at the Cox Castle this year because it’s our first Christmas with Sam. The Yorkshire Terrier who came into our lives when he was ten weeks is now eight months old, weighs six pounds, and is as precious as can be. He keeps us on our toes with his boundless energy, hilarious behaviour, and adoring affection. He has a very bold, smart and sweet personality, and is the most playful puppy of all time. Sam enjoys his toys more than his food, and he loves his food! His gruff big-dog bark is adorable and he takes his watchdog role very seriously.

Xmas Sam - Couch Toy

We do a lot of celebrating and socializing at this time of year and enjoy looking festive and spreading good cheer. Sam’s holiday capsule was fun to put together and also quite the learning curve for his fashion stylist Mama. Unlike our other Yorkies Rosie and Jasmine, Sam does NOT like to wear sweaters, coats, T-shirts, or collars that jingle. His free spirit and very playful lifestyle mean that unfussy accessories that are soft, lightweight and comfortable are the only way to go. Sam’s holiday ensembles have to be an extension of his collar so that they don’t get in the way of eating, playing, bone chewing, sleeping, standing guard, walking and cuddling.

Xmas Sam - Bowtie

After some trial and error, I found just the right pieces for Sam’s holiday look. A dapper bow tie and a fun reversible bandana. As luck would have it, the one side of the bandana is black which is Greg’s happy colour, while the other side is lime green — my happy colour. Sam is indifferent to the colours of his wardrobe items. As long as he can play in his outfit – he’s happy as a clam.

Xmas Sam - Couch Toy

Xmas Sam - Black Bandana

We can’t adequately express how much we love our little Sam. He makes our house a home and enriches our lives in that incomparable way that doggies do. We at YLF wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas, and safe travels.

Elegant Modern Classic in Chicago

Former TV news anchor and reporter Mary Murnane hails from Chicago and writes about style, culture, design and life on her namesake blog. Her Modern Classic style is simple, chic, ultra polished and elegant. Mary has an amazing coat collection and a keen eye for beautiful fabrics and pieces that make an impactful statement.

Mary Murnane - 1

Classics that fit perfectly are hard to beat. When purchasing new pieces Mary looks for excellent quality fabrics with great drape and unique design details to set her outfits apart. Here it’s the saddle leather side-belting of the pencil skirt that turns things up a notch. Tucking the button-down shirt into the knee-length skirt draws attention to the belt, and creates a long leg line. Leopard print pointy toe pumps add subtle oomph. A streamlined bag in a rich brown that matches the belt detail on the skirt, and works beautifully with the navy and light blue colour palette, completes this elegant polished look.

Bundling up during Chicago Winters is a necessity. No wonder that our blogger has an enviable coat collection. Mary dresses up a casual outfit consisting of black skinny jeans and a cashmere jumper with an oversized camel hooded shearling coat. The cream borders add visual contrast and keep her extra toasty. Wearing skinnies tucked into ankle boots tempers the volume of the topper. The cinnamon suede booties with three buckle straps provide textural interest. Black and white animal print gloves form a fun contrast with the warm-toned coat. A small pebbled leather clutch further ties the black and camel together.

A fun twist on the festive suit. Mary shakes things up by opting for a feminine bustier instead of the more ubiquitous black blazer or a tuxedo jacket. A great idea for a holiday party, work reception or date night. Layering the bustier over an untucked classic white shirt creates a fab graphic colour block effect. The cropped tailored trousers streamline the look. Showing some ankle skin and sporting refined black pointy toe pumps strikes the right balance between androgynous chic and subtle allure. Our blogger’s ruffled tomato red clutch, sleek blonde hair and pink lipstick are the ladylike finishing touches.

It took several tries before Mary found a way of styling her blanket scarf in a way that felt fab instead of frumpy. In the end securing it with a kilt pin and creating a pseudo-poncho look did the trick for her. Our blogger layered the plaid scarf over a longer length ink turtleneck sweater and trendy cropped skinny jeans. A casual and easy combination that lets the beautiful colours and big plaid pattern do all the talking. The fitted silhouette of the skinnies offsets the volume of the scarf. Baring some ankle skin also adds structure. Plus, the colour of Mary’s suede buckle ankle boots is low-contrast against her skin, which lengthens the leg line. A structured crossbody in a rich shade of brown and classic pearl stud earrings finish off the look.

A trendy outfit with a gorgeous brown suede A-line skirt is the star of the show. It’s also a great example of how you can wear a boho item like this buttoned skirt in a very crisp and modern way. Pairing booties with taller shafts with a midi skirt can be tricky but Mary pulls it off beautifully. She has layered a chunky knit sleeveless sweater over a black turtleneck body suit. The cropped pullover showcases the entirety of the skirt, which creates vertical integrity. The black boots are high-contrast against our blogger’s pale skin, but choosing a heeled style that snugly hugs the leg helps streamline the look. Baring part of the leg also adds structure. A small cognac crossbody with chain strap is a further fun nod to ‘70s Boho style.

Sophisticated chic with tailored layering and a monochrome colour palette. Mary is sporting wide-legged trousers with beautiful drape that are the perfect length for her platform pumps. She’s paired them with a crisp striped button-down worn untucked under a blue pullover that is just slouchy enough. Belting the sweater adds a bit of structure. There’s some subtle pattern mixing going on with the striped shirt sleeves, hem and collar peeking out from under the marled pullover and the self-patterned trousers. The green snakeskin T-strap pumps add more visual interest and are just plain fun. A simple black wristlet is the accessory of choice. Finally, our blogger’s sleek blonde do and polished make-up complete the stylish Modern Classic picture.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Mary’s elegant and chic Modern Classic style. Let us know in the comments, and then hop on over to her blog to check out the rest of her fab outfits.

The Colour Green and Your Style

It seems fitting to talk about green at this time of year because, like red, it’s thought of as a Christmassy colour. All shades of green count, from muted olive or rich forest greens, to brighter chartreuse, emerald, lime and neon greens.

Forest green used to be a mainstream colour. It has made a bit of a comeback recently and I believe it can go mainstream again. I have plenty of clients who adore this shade of green and would like to see more of it at retail. It works well with neutrals like black and white and is sufficiently muted to be combined like a neutral.

Emerald green was Pantone’s colour of the year a few seasons ago, and chartreuse floats in and out of fashion. We see olive in all its shades every year and it is gaining momentum. Neon green was big in the ‘80s, and lime or apple green had its fashionable moment in the ‘90s. Neither colours have gone mainstream since then.

I don’t think that green wardrobe items should be saved for festive holiday dressing. If you like the colour, wear it year round whenever it strikes your fancy. Wear it with shades of red if that makes you happy. Why not!

Lime green is my favourite colour. In fact, something between a lime and apple green was one of the main colours in the original YLF site design. Although I don’t wear much green clothing, I do wear bright green specs every single day. My iPhone 6 Plus case is lime green, and so is the beaded tissue holder that I keep in my handbag. I also have a cropped neon green Spring coat that makes me smile. I LOVE green. How about you?
