Ensemble: Easy Black & Blush

Earlier this week, we spoke about how to create an outfit that combines black with a pastel like blush pink. The variations depended on variables like your hair colour, and whether you preferred a less harsh statement by adding accent colours like shades of white, grey, blue denim and silver.

The outfit on the far left here is an outfit that I wear based on this colour palette. The exact items are represented in the collection. As a blonde, I prefer to add a bit of white to the outfit to soften the palette and bring out the lightness in my hair.

Here are three easy ways to pull together blush with black to get your creative juices flowing.

Black Bottoms, Blush Top & Support Act

Combine a pair of black trousers, jeans, harem pants, cropped pants, culottes or shorts with a blush shirt, tee, blouse or pullover that works with the vibe of the bottoms. Choose black, white or silver footwear to complement the silhouette of the bottoms. Choose a black, white, blush or silver bag.

Black Skirt, White Top & Blush Topper

Combine a white (or light grey) top with a black skirt or pair of culottes, and top the lot off with a blush jacket, coat or cardigan. Add black, silver, white or cream footwear that works with the style of the skirt. Choose a black, white, blush or silver bag.

Black Top, Blue Jeans & Blush Topper

Combine a black shirt, tee, blouse or pullover with blue jeans and top the lot off with a blush jacket, coat or cardigan. Finish off the look with black or silver footwear, and bag to match. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Ensemble: Easy Black & Blush

I LOVE the graphic, yet romantic integrity of these outfits and really want to get a blush wool coat this year. Remember that white pearls work well as the shade of white that you add to the outfit to soften the palette.

Wardrobe Maintenance Reminders for August

I’ve found that Mid August is a great time to attend to a few important aspects of my wardrobe before my work schedule gets a lot busier in late September or early October.

1. Send Outerwear to the Cleaners

I dry-clean our wool coats so that they are ready for another season of wear. I’m usually so done with Winter coats by the time our warm Spring weather rolls around that I forget to dry-clean outerwear in May or June. So I’ve made it a habit to take coats to the cleaners right in the middle of Summer when I know I won’t need them.

2. Fix Fall & Winter Footwear

My boots take quite a beating, which means that they need a little TLC before I start wearing them again in the Autumn and Winter. Heels need to be resoled, light leather needs a good clean, brown leather could do with a polish, and some of the insoles need repairing too. A visit to the cobbler is on the calendar.

3. Purchase Bras & Knickers

I replenish my underwear once a year, and might as well do it in August when I make a point of attending to other wardrobe maintenance tasks. The undies I like to wear don’t seem to go on sale so it makes little difference when I purchase them.

4. Review my Closet

I do a more simplified closet edit and review monthly, which keeps the process fast, easy and my closet space organized. But twice a year, just before the change of the retail season in August and February, I do a more detailed closet review so that I know what I have, what I need, and how I want to evolve my style. I go through every item and assess whether it stays, goes, or is demoted to a holding zone.

Finally, if I needed hot and warm weather items I would stock up on them now because stores will be full of woolly Fall merchandise by the time September rolls around.

Weekly Roundup: Comfy Boots & Oxfords

Usually, there aren’t many new items in stores in August in the Northern hemisphere. Retailers are clearing Summer stock with end-of-season sales. But this year, regular Fall stock is trickling in a month early. Maybe retailers know that it’s exciting to see fresh Fall merchandise despite our current hot weather reality.

I’m looking to add another pair of low-heeled, dressy cream boots to my cold weather footwear capsule because they’ve become a wardrobe essential for my style. Calvin Klein’s Narla Block Heel Booties are strong contenders because they’re comfortable, classic, sleek, simple, have gold hardware, and are not overly wide on my narrow ankle. I’d have preferred a closer fit on the ankle, but these look fine when I wear them with straight or flared cropped jeans or pants. There’s something about the wider hem of the crops that is a little more forgiving of the wider bootie fit around the ankle. It seems to offset the “stem in a flower pot” effect I have become quite intolerant of.

I’m having a good run with Topshop footwear so I also have high hopes for the two pairs of booties below. I’ve had low-heeled gold booties on my shopping list for a year, and the red leopard also looks very interesting. Both pairs of booties are bright (and so are cream booties, for that matter), and just what I need to help me get through our grey and wet Autumn and Winter. I’ll keep you posted on how they fit, look and feel.

In the meantime, here’s a collection of tried-and-tested styles that have recently worked on my clients. Some come in a variety of colours, so be sure to check them out. But most importantly, these styles are comfortable.

  • Earth 'Intrepid' Peep Toe Bootie (Women): Works on low and regular volume feet. A neat and tidy fit around the ankle. Looks better on the foot than in the photo. Both the black and tan are fab. Well made.
  • CLOUD 'Aline' Bootie (Women): Adorable extra casual booties to wear with rolled hem jeans. Good fit on narrow ankles. All the colours are nice.
  • Paul Green 'Willow' Peep Toe Sandal (Women): The sandal bootie looks best in the Earth Metallic colour option. Think sparkly brown and quite unique. Works best on a high volume foot and ankle. Impeccable quality.
  • Topshop 'Aubergine Perspex' Clear Heel Bootie (Women): Buttery soft leather and a good fit on narrow ankles. Fab for low and regular volume feet. Nice rounded square toe box too. The shaft does not dig into you as you stride. The see-through heel is interesting, and showcases the nails that are used to keep the heel in place. I found the effect overly "rough around the edges" for my own style, but clients loved it.
  • Topshop 'Maggie' Flared Heel Bootie (Women): Modern Retro Fabness. Looks like a go-go boot with current sass. So far, the best trendy silver high-shaft bootie of the season. The shaft does not dig into you as you stride. Works on a low and regular volume foot. Good fit on a narrow ankle. NOTE: the colour is off in the photo. They are quite a bit darker, and a blue slate grey. The metallic does not look like it will scuff that easily.
  • Summit 'Galene' Bootie (Women): This one is for Team Casual Glitz with low volume feet and long toes. A fun warm weather bootie. Both colours are nice.
  • Calvin Klein Narla: Sleek, simple, classic and dressy. All the colours are nice, although the navy and cream are the most unique. They'll work for low and regular volume feet. Elegant on the foot. The opening is a little wide for narrow ankles, and becomes wider the larger the size. But wearing them with straight or flared crops offsets the wideness of the opening, somehow.
  • Summit White Mountain Dawson: Versatile, statement flat oxfords that you can wear with just about anything these days to create an interesting outfit juxtaposition. Buttery soft, supportive, and accommodates long toes.
  • Ahnu 'Emery' Oxford (Women): Buttery soft and very casual. Can accommodate a higher volume foot. All the colours are nice, but the grey with red laces is the most unique. Read the rave reviews.

You can see the items alongside my descriptions on the collection page.

’80s Inspired Jumpsuit & Denim Vest

A new outfit from Natalie Live of The Tiny Closet, whom we introduced to YLF in May 2014.

This hectically patterned jumpsuit with oversized denim vest and sneakers is delightfully ’80s. Natalie’s lightweight jumpsuit is voluminous all over, making it a playful and breezy option for hot Summer days. Pairing it with a two-toned oversized denim vest gives the look a tomboy and slightly rough-around-the-edges vibe that works well with our blogger’s relaxed casual style. A low neckline, bare ankles and arms create structure, so that this oversized look doesn’t overwhelm 5 foot tall Natalie. Her short curly ‘do and red lipstick are the girly finishing touches.

Outfit Formula: Tunic, Cropped Pants, Jacket & Heels

This post was inspired by one of my clients, who recently wore the outfit combination to our shopping session. She combined a dress length tunic with tailored cropped pants, a fitted denim jacket, and cage heels. She’s 5ft 2 and looked absolutely sensational, so you definitely don’t have to be tall to wear the look.

Here are the components of the outfit:

Dramatic Tunic

You’re after a tunic that has drama, which means a length that grazes your knees, or goes beyond your knees. In fact, dresses make the perfect tunics for this outfit combination. Hemlines can be asymmetrical, handkerchief or high-low. Sleeved, sleeveless, solid, patterned, knitted or woven – take your pick. Silhouettes can be straight, A-line, cocoon, or fit-and-flare. The dresses and tunics in the collection provide good examples of the vibe.

Cropped Pants

Choose a pair of sleek cropped pants or jeans to layer under the tunic or the dress. A hem that finishes two to four inches above the ankle bone is a flop proof cropped pants or jeans length. The hems of the pants can be skinny, straight or flared. I vote no leggings because jeans and pants create a more architectural integrity which lends itself well to this look. Create a low contrast between the top and the bottom if you want to lengthen the line of the leg. Wear any colour bottom that works with the top and footwear.

Cropped Jacket

A cropped and tailored denim jacket or moto is an easy option. But do try other short jacket silhouettes with the combination. The range of styles in the collection are another way to go. Create a low contrast between the jacket and top if you’re worried about “chopping up your look”, but know that adding heels can offset the chopped effect.

Heels or Flats

Choose dressy or casual footwear that works with the length and style of the cropped pants. Heels, both low and high, work well because they lengthen the leg line and offset the horizontal lines that the layers create across the body. But don’t think you can’t wear flats either. I do! I’ve worn a very casual rendition of this outfit formula a few times with flat white sandals. You can see the exact pieces of my outfit in this collection. It’s not a column of colour, but the low contrast between the dress, jeans and jacket elongates the outfit so that I felt just fine finishing things off with flats.

ExampleAnd finally, a little dressy street style inspiration to get those creative juices flowing. The jacket is longer, but its tailored fit helps offset the length – as does the fact that it’s worn quite open, thereby creating a strong vertical line down the front of the body. The flared crops are at a perfect shorter length, while the asymmetrical hem and diagonal lines of the dress add structure. The extra high heels further elongate the outfit and make it dressy.
