The Advantages of V-Necks

Ten years ago V-necks on tops, dresses and knitwear were widely available. As fashion trends moved to higher necklines, they became less and less available. At one point, garments with V-necks were almost impossible to find, which was a missed retail opportunity because they look good on most women. There should always be a good selection of V-neck merchandise in stores during the height of a retail reason.

V-necklines are very popular with my clients. In addition to looking alluring and feeling breezy, they tend to create a visually flattering effect on women with the following body type modifiers:

  • Large bust: A lower neckline breaks up the expanse of the bust very effectively. Conversely, a high neckline tends to make the bust look larger.
  • Short neck: A V-neck elongates the length of the neck.  A high neckline shortens the length of the neck.
  • Broad shoulder line: A V-neck narrows the width of the shoulder line by accentuating vertical integrity.
  • Petite height: A shorter person tends to look more proportioned in a V-neck because of its elongating and vertical qualities.
  • Short waist: Sometimes a V-neck can offset the short length of a waist by drawing the eye in a vertical direction.

If you can tick one or more boxes above, you’ll probably enjoy wearing V-necks as long as they aren’t cut too wide or too low. And you’re in luck because Spring and Summer 2017 collections are full of V-necks. They’re back with a vengeance!

My body type modifiers are the polar opposite to those best suited to V-necks. I’m regular height with a regular size bust, regular length waist, narrow shoulder line, and extremely long neck. My long neck looks even longer with my very short hairstyle. My preference is for high necklines that shorten the length of the neck and widen the shoulders. I do wear unbuttoned shirts that create an effective V-neck, but in that case the collar makes all the difference.

Over to you. Do you like to wear V-necks, and if so tell us why?

Ensemble: Modern Audrey

RosamarieThis ensemble was inspired by last month’s featured blogger Rosamarie, who combined a column of black with dressy loafers, scarf and statement bag. It’s an easy outfit to pull together, and one that you might be able to shop for in your closet right away. To my eye it’s the pops of contrasting colour that make the look. It’s one that is particularly suited to those with black or dark brown hair. There is something about a column of black and black footwear that works really well with very dark hair.

I’ve shown two renditions of the look, and red and green as the pops of colour. Feel free to choose any accent colours to combine with the black. Here are the components of the outfit:

Black Ankle Pants: Choose a pair of fitted black ankle pants that are tapered, straight or flared at the hem. Two to three inches above the ankle bone is a good length. Any longer and you’ll look like you’re wearing “high water pants” that are neither here nor there. Make sure the length of your crops looks intentional, ESPECIALLY when wearing flats with the look. Petites watch out, and ensure that the pants are sufficiently short.

Black Top: Choose a solid pullover or knitted top — fitted, fluid or oversized — with a neckline of your choice to create the column of black. The neckline needs to be low enough to tie a scarf onto bare skin. Wear it untucked.

Dressy Loafers or Oxfords: Add a pair of black dressy oxfords or loafers. Heeled or flat Mary Janes will also work, and will add to the Modern Retro vibe of the outfit. By all means, add a pair of non-neutral shoes to the mix. This could be super cute if it picks up the colours in your accessories.

Add sheer black knee-highs or dainty trouser socks to keep your feet and ankles warm. If you like, you could also play around with a subtle patterned sock, but that will dress down the outfit.

Topper: Top the outfit off with a neutral or coloured wool coat, trench coat, or moto jacket.

Dressy Accessories: A silky square scarf is a must and makes the look. Tie it in a reef or square knot snugly against the neck, making sure the ends lie flat (this post on knot tying shows you how to do that). If you have a shorter neck, tie the knot loosely around the neck, and wear a top with a V-neckline. Finish off the look with a dressy non-neutral bag in a solid or pattern that matches the scarf. The match is not a must, but will help pull the outfit together. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Ensemble: Modern Audrey

I would wear these outfits minus the black footwear. I would choose red, cream or gold to complement my pale complexion. I’d also amp up the brights and wear pearls with the scarf. How about you?

Weekly Roundup: Fun Sale Items

Retailers are clearing out stock to make room for Spring collections. The best of Fall and Winter merchandise is gone, but every so often, you get lucky with a perfect purchase that’s on sale right at the end of the season. That happened to me when I found my ink blue Soia & Kyo puffer coat on sale a few weeks ago. It’s turned out to be the best heavy puffer coat of all time, and I couldn’t be happier with it.

Many of the items below can be worn well into Spring. Browse all the colour options.

You can see my descriptions alongside the items on the collection page.

Travelling and Missing My Wardrobe

I just got back from a trip to the Netherlands, for which I packed a practical and colourful Winter travel capsule. It was extremely effective, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I was warm enough in below freezing temperatures, and my feet were happy — a must since I did a lot of walking. I could create both casual and smart casual outfits. I wasn’t bored with wearing the same outfit formula because items varied in colour and fabrication. Check the forum to see all the outfit combinations in action.

Travel Capsule

Despite being very happy with what I packed and how the outfits came together, I need to change things up as soon as I get home. For a while I need to wear outfits that feel different to those in my travel capsule.

Today, the day after I returned, the last thing I wanted to wear was a pair of blue jeans. So I reached for a pair of white boyfriend jeans and finished off the look with an ink blue turtleneck, ink boots, cognac belt, short toffee puffer, and citron clutch. I had missed wearing white jeans, earth tones, and a clutch all week. Here are the exact items.

Tomorrow I’ll want a more dramatic change, which makes a cosy sweater dress with dainty hosiery and tall ink blue boots a strong contender for the day. After wearing jeans and pants for a while, I missed my dresses.

Being separated from most of my wardrobe makes me miss it, appreciate it, and excited to wear something with a different vibe when I get home. The creative juices flow as I imagine new combinations of old wardrobe items.

Do you also feel this way when you are separated from your wardrobe for a while?
