Stock Up On Sartorial Favourites

Fads are a thing of the past. Styles still go in and out of fashion, but the changes are much less extreme than they used to be. There are definite trends, but these days there are very few styles that are completely off-trend. Fashion is much more inclusive. You can pick and choose where you want to be trendy, and where you don’t.

What does change is the availability of certain styles in stores. Retailers will focus on the most trendy silhouettes. So while you might feel fine wearing a style that is less than trendy, you might struggle to find it at retail.

Which brings me to my point:

Stock up on sartorial favourites when they’re on trend and wear the heck out of them.

Unless you’re a fortunate thrifter or can track down the items on eBay, you can only purchase a sartorial favourite when it’s on trend and available in stores. That’s precisely when you need to snap them up, before they disappear for the next, or several, fashion cycles.

For example, stable and comfortable low block heels are currently on trend which is just what the doctor ordered for my feet and lifestyle. It’s been decades since they were last in fashion and therefore quite the HEWI (Highly Elusive Wardrobe Item.) I’ve been stocking up for the last few years and will continue to do so.

For you it might be a hard-to-find colour, silhouette of top, style of denim, length of rise, length of top, type of fit or type of pant. There’s no need to worry about the item dating too quickly because as I mentioned up top, items have much more fashionable longevity these days.

Wardrobe Essential: Simple Striped Top

wardrobe essential is a simple, versatile, current and indispensable wardrobe staple that makes the rest of your wardrobe more wearable. It is NOT a statement item or wardrobe basic, (wardrobe basics are items like underwear, sleepwear, socks, shapewear, hosiery and loungewear.) Think of a wardrobe essential as “the glue” that makes other items in your wardrobe work together to create a cohesive outfit.

There’s been lots of interesting discussion about wardrobe essentials on the blog and in the forum over the last few weeks. It emphasized just how PERSONAL a list of wardrobe essentials can be. What is essential to one person, is not necessarily essential to another. In fact, an essential to one person might be a statement piece to another.

This brings me to the simple striped top and its ability to be a fabulous wardrobe essential. It was not a popular item on the essentials lists of our forum members. Generally, I don’t think of the simple striped top as a statement item because it’s very basic. The collection below showcases an assortment of the types of striped T-shirts and pullovers I’m talking about. If you’re into the classics, choose a high-contrast stripe in black, navy or red paired with white. For a more subtle effect, go for a low-contrast stripe like charcoal and black, pearl grey and white, or navy and black.

Here are five reasons why a simple striped top can be a versatile item for your style:

  1. It’s a Modern Classic with a high longevity factor
  2. It has excellent pattern mixing potential
  3. It packs a visual punch, despite its simplicity
  4. It’s more interesting than a solid T-shirt or pullover
  5. You can choose a subtle or bold combination of stripes across a range of widths so that there’s a stripe to suit you

I’m adding the simple striped top to my list of wardrobe essentials for 2017. Since I added two more striped pullovers from Boden to my wardrobe this year, it’s definitely become an essential for Spring and Summer. Here are the exact items in my wardrobe.

Is the simple striped top a wardrobe essential for your style? Or is it too preppy, classic, sporty, geometric, bold or horizontal?

Wardrobe Capsules for Your Pet

Effective wardrobe capsules can be just as important for your pet as they are for you. It’s taken us almost two years to figure out what works best for our Yorkshire Terrier Sam’s body shape, active lifestyle, and our damp Seattle climate. If he wants to be taken seriously as a six-pounder, Sam has to dress the part. Together we’ve created a wardrobe that expresses his big personality, exceptional lust for adventure, unending curiosity, fearless strength, and very happy disposition.

Comfort is extremely important to Sam. He cannot tolerate stiff fabrics or fussy items. He’s happiest going au naturel, but that’s neither safe nor practical for daily activities. After trial and error and some soul searching, we’ve built a wonderful wardrobe that looks good and feels great.

Sam’s wardrobe consists of essentials and statement items.

Wardrobe Essentials

Sam has a large collection of wardrobe essentials. He has a bold personality, so what might be a statement piece for any other dog can be a daily essential for Sam.

Collars: An assortment of happy colours complete with personalized name tag are worn year round. Two are made of recycled plastic bottles, which is Sam doing his bit for the environment. He’ll soon be adding colours like yellow and lime green to this category.

Harnesses: Two harnesses in neutral tones and ultra soft breathable fabric complement his colourful collars and keep Sam comfortable on energetic walks.

Fleece Jackets: It took us a LONG time to find the perfect essential topper for Sam, because his slender little body is hard to fit. The style had to be unfussy, and the fabric super soft. An assortment of warm and washable fleece jackets in brights and navy turned out to be ideal. Sam wears them out on a walk for six months of the year because he feels the cold more than large dogs with thicker fur. He has two in navy to match Greg’s outerwear. Duplication for the win.

Leads: Two leads in softer colours work well with the brights of the collars and jackets.

Sam has an affinity for colour mixing, so he combines all the leads, harnesses and fleece jackets. He can also create a matchy-matchy look with striped collar, turquoise jacket and turquoise lead.

Statement Holiday Capsule

Sam is slowly but surely building his holiday capsule. He’s not overly fond of his striped hoodie from the Gap because it’s a bit high on the fussiness factor. Bandanas and ties that make a simple and comfortable statement are best.

Statement SuperBowl Capsule

Sam is a Seattle Seahawks fan and enjoys showing his support during NFL season. He likes his Seahawks collar and bandana best, and is lucky to look awfully dashing in navy. Festive and fun.

Statement Super Hero Capsule

Sam spends a lot of time guarding, defending and protecting the Cox Castle as BatSam or SuperSam. For this line of work, which he takes VERY seriously, Sam needs indestructible outfits that mean business. These powerful statement looks speak for themselves.

Here is Sam’s complete wardrobe as a collection.

And here are some pictures of him today in stylish action.

Fashion News Roundup: March 2017

A Braille smartwatch, H&M launching a new venture, and other news from the style trenches in March.

Fun Fashion Fact

Did you know that Rootstein mannequins with their extremely lifelike features — they even had facial pores — were long considered the Rolls Royce of fashion dummies. South African-born Adel Rootstein started making mannequins in the kitchen of her basement flat in Earls Court in 1956, and over the years the mannequins would be modelled on real-life people like Pat Cleveland, a young Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon and Joan Collins during her days of playing Alexis Colby in Dynasty.

Ensemble: Easy Wide Cropped Jeans

This ensemble was inspired by some of the outfits that I put together with my new wide cropped Rayner trouser jeans. I’m enjoying the wide cropped pants silhouette because it’s tailored, fresh, and looks architectural in substantial fabrics. The exact items in the outfits are represented in the collection below. I mixed and matched the footwear, bags and toppers. Note that I wear the twinset as a top, and don’t remove the cardigan.

I like to wear my wide crops with flats or low heels up to one and half inches. This means that I wear them at a length that’s two and a half to three inches above the ankle bone, AND with a shorter top so that the leg line is lengthened from the hips upward.

The outfits in the ensemble below are almost exact replicas of my outfits. A bold and high-contrast rendition on the left and a dark column of colour on the right. Each outfit worn with bright shoes and bags.

Here are the components of the ensemble.

Wide Cropped Pants: Choose a pair of wide cropped jeans or trousers, much like a streamlined pair of culottes. Make sure the length is no longer than two inches above the ankle bone to create an intentional look. If you like to wear flats and very low heels, sport the length even shorter, like three to four inches above the ankle bone.

Shorter Top: Style wide cropped pants much like a flared midi skirt, which means pairing it with a shorter top to create structure and lengthen the leg line from the hips upward. The top can be fitted, fluid, or drapey and oversized. Tops with welts work well because they tailor the fit on the hips. A fitted and cropped cardigan can be buttoned through to create the effect of a short, fitted top.

Wear the top untucked when you’re short-waisted. Feel free to tuck a longer top into the jeans or pants for structure with a regular or long waist.

Footwear: Choose footwear to work with the outfit. I chose tailored booties and hi-tops in a shade of white, and bright red loafers. The white bookends my hair. Sandal booties, pumps, ankle strap footwear, and pointy toe flats will work as well. Flat oxfords are a little trickier, but can look fun too.

Topper: I like the look best with a short or long topper, so I chose a moto and knee-length military coat. That in-between mid-thigh coat length tends to chop up proportions and look more “horizontal”, although it IS a trendy combination.

Accessories: Finish off the look with a bag that tickles your fancy. I chose a chain strap crossbody and satchel in brights because they make me happy. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.
