Trend: Bermuda Shorts

Since the ‘90s are on-trend, Bermuda shorts are having their fashion moment. They are so named because of their popularity in Bermuda, where they were considered appropriate business attire for men when made of suit-like material and worn with knee-length socks, a dress shirt, tie, and blazer. Bermudas are dressier, long structured shorts. Lengths vary from an inch above the top of the kneecap, to covering the kneecap. They are shorter than cropped pants, clamdiggers and capris that extend further down the knee. Bermudas are also known as walk shorts and dress shorts.

Bermuda shorts are tailored, although their silhouettes can greatly differ. They are made of woven trouser fabric, which runs the gamut across natural and man-made fibres. Lengths hover around the knee, but look visually different when the kneecap is exposed or covered. The leg fit can be super slim, straight, or flare out a little like culottes. Waistbands can be pleated or flat. Hems can be cuffed. Rises are usually mid to high-rise. Bermudas are generally solid, although patterns are coming through. You’ll see them with matching vests and blazers to create a suit too. The collection below shows examples.

Denim Bermuda shorts tend to look different to non-denim ones. They look like very short tailored five-pocket jeans as opposed to denim trousers. Lengths vary from an inch above the top of the kneecap, to covering the kneecap. Fits are tailored as opposed to slouchy, although leg widths differ. Some are tapered, and others flare out a bit. Sometimes the cuffs are rolled. You’ll find all sorts of denim washes and distressing, a few patterns, and some colours. The more distressed the denim, the more casual the vibe. Here are some examples.

My clients, friends and family vary in their affection for Bermudas. Some find their length awfully unflattering, and much prefer shorter shorts. Conversely, some will wear long shorts like Bermudas almost exclusively. Some will wear Bermudas if they are denim and NOT pleated. Some will wear them if they are dressy, and not denim. Some will wear Bermudas if they are straight and tapered so that they don’t flare out on the thighs. Others enjoy the A-line flare, and a pleated look. And some stick to skirts and dresses, and don’t wear shorts at all.

I like Bermuda shorts because visually, I adore their long length. It looks soooo good to my eye! Personally, my preferred length is knee-covering, and I don’t make exceptions. I like their tailored and dressy vibe, and enjoy the casual denim versions too. I like all sorts of Bermudas, and have worn them since the ‘90s. I like pleats and flat fronts, cuffs and no cuffs, high and mid rises, flared and tapered legs, and across a range of colours and patterns. It’s all good in my book.

At the moment, I have precisely two pairs of shorts, and they are denim Bermudas. One blue, one white, and they are shown in the collection. I wear them UN-rolled so that they cover my knees. They form part of my beach capsule but very occasionally come out to play in the city.

Although I adore wearing long dressier shorts, I don’t have a pair because I’m devoted to wearing midi and midaxi dresses in the Summer, or cropped white jeans. I can’t seem to get enough of those items in the short time frame that I can wear them in Seattle. As a result, dressy shorts fall off my radar. I need to put them back on my radar.

Over to you. Do you like and wear Bermuda shorts, and do you fancy the trend?

The sleeves are voluminous but shorter, which tapers their volume a bit. Breezy and covered. It has a glam '70s vibe to it. Looks good tucked into bottoms too. I wore it smart casually tucked into wide leg '70s jeans with pink loafers and bag that are an exact match.
  • Reiss Cierra Off-Shoulder Strap Top: This top looks like a good way to wear an off-the-shoulder style that stays put. Fab for Team Alluring Shoulder Line. You might be able to layer it over a tank top for a fun layered effect. It can work under a jacket. Comes in other neutrals. I might try it.

  • Ganni Straight Leg Organic Cotton Jeans: I got these and they are more ecru and colour-blocked in person. That will make them work well into Autumn and Winter. On-trend barrel shape in a more architectural way. Love them! They are as wide and balloon-shaped as they look. 100% organic cotton, no stretch, making them crisp yet soft. I'm 5ft 6, and they finish on the ankle bone on me. Longer than on the model. The rise is high, but it drops at the crotch point, so it finishes neatly on the waist.
  • Madewell The Perfect Straight Low Rise Jeans: For those who enjoy lower rises, try these. Less fitted on the leg and can work for a slightly curvier and straighter body type.

Fashion News Roundup: May 2022

The first federal fashion bill, a major Coco Chanel exhibition, and more news from this month’s fashion trenches.

Fun Fashion Fact

Did you know that milliner turned mogul Jeanne Lanvin was one of the designers who popularized the cloche hat. “In 1922 she realized that the intrusive hat laden with trimmings that she had always shown was not in the mood of the day. She willingly adapted her aesthetics to the sporty, boyish young looks that chic Parisians wanted by giving them the cloche — one of millinery’s most enduring fashions, loved for its chic, but also for the sense of freedom it brought. It was the standard fashionable hat for almost 10 years.”

Outfit Formula: All White

There are many ways to create an all white outfit in the Spring and Summer. Remember to choose your favourite white. It’s optical white for some, or ivory, cream, tan, bone, or even a very pale pearl grey for others. It’s also fine to mix different whites. They don’t need to match perfectly, unless that’s your preference.

You can choose white footwear to match the outfit, or go for something like a metallic, grey, tan, or blush. Rich browns, and animal print can work too. Black shoes might bookend your hair.

Here are some fabulous all white looks.

I LOVE crisp, all white outfits, and do a version every Spring and Summer. Sometimes I mix white, cream, and off-white, and sometimes I match the whites. I use white jeans as bottoms, and add a white top, bag, and shoes. Sometimes I wear a blush bag and shoes. I hope to find the right white dress and pants suit at some point.

Here are four specific outfit ideas.

1. White Suit

Here’s a beautiful white linen suit with on-trend pleated pants, waist tie, and classic blazer to match. The simple layering camisole is white too. The extra long length of the slouchy pants looks great in theory, but they are awfully impractical street sweepers. The length will slip under your feet as you stride too. My suggestion is to wear them a little shorter. White jeans and shorts are another option. I can see a very light silvery grey or tan camisole work well too. Brown loafers or mules break up the white, and a bag to match is a nice option.

White Suit

2. White Dress

Wearing a Summery white dress is an easy way to wear white from head to toe. I like the textured fabric of this one because it adds interest to the expanse of flat white, and makes the fabric more substantial. The white ankle-strap toe sandals are a perfect match with the dress, and bookend the model’s platinum hair.

3. Casual White

A very light tan or ecru pair of bottoms are a great way to wear ‘white’ bottoms if optical white is not your thing. Here a pair of tan culottes is paired with an open-weave polo shirt that’s layered over a white camisole. The white slides match the top, and a straw hat matches the culottes. I vote white or tan bag.

Casual White

4. White Layers

Here’s a look with white layers, and the whites match and are textured. An oversized open-weave swingy sweater is worn over an untucked white tank top. The cropped length and asymmetrical hem of the top showcase a hint of waist and hip definition, which tempers its volume. The tops are combined with a pair of very baggy and wide white pants. These are at a safe and easier to walk in length that won’t sweep the floor. The volume of the white items make them more opaque. White heeled sandals complete the fun arty and architectural look. Add jewellery, watch, headgear and eyewear as desired.
