Fab Finds: Talbots Tops and Bottoms

Talbots is an East Coast clothing brand that is very size inclusive. It offers petite, regular, plus, and plus petite sizing across many of its items. Unfortunately this is not reflected in the body shapes of the models who showcase the merchandise, so you need to click and search for the items in your size. For example, the stock photo of a top is shown in a regular size model (which Talbots calls “misses”), but on the product page you’ll see the availability across a large range of sizes under the headings, “petite,” “plus,” and “plus petite.”

Several of my clients have had an extremely good run with Talbots, so I’m sharing some of the winners below. The merchandise is generally fabulous quality, and fabrics are quite luxe. The inside of the garments are fabulously finished. Knitted tops and tees are particularly lovely quality and launder well. Lots of items are on sale now too.

1. Talbots Tops

As some of my clients say, “Talbots gets my body.” Their tops seem to find a fabulous balance between being sufficiently fluid in the right places so that they don’t cling to the midsection, and sufficiently tapered in the right places so that they don’t hang like tents. They can be worn untucked with some structure. There is plenty of room in the shoulders and bust, and armholes aren’t cut too low. Necklines aren’t always high and constricting. There are also lots of small interesting design details on cuffs, hemlines, and necklines that denote quality and add that bit of punchy extra. You might need to size down on tops. Lots of patterns, colours, and size options when you click through the links.

2. Talbots Bottoms

Talbots pants and jeans tend to be a good fit on those who like room in the thighs and seat, and on the midsection. They can work as well for pear-shaped body types as they do for apple-shaped body types. Rises are generally in a good spot, and fabrics are substantial. Talbots skirts are equally great and come in a range of silhouettes. Their knitted skirts are particularly comfortable and drape well. Like tops, you might need to size down. Lots of patterns, colours, and size options when you click through the links.

Outfit Formula: Seasalt Cornwall

Today’s outfit inspiration comes from Seasalt Cornwall who make lovely quality clothing and accessories that are woven with stories of Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Cornwall’s wild landscape, artistic culture and maritime heritage inspire their casual and useful designs.

I particularly appreciate how relatable, comfortable, practical and easy the styling of the brand’s outfits are. The attention to detail is fabulous and the patterns are interesting. Here are some my favourites of their Summer collection.

1. Tee, Pencil, Jumper, Sneakers

A relaxed patterned pencil skirt is combined with a fluid long-sleeved tee. It’s tucked into the skirt to create some structure. White sneakers pick up the white of the tee, and keep the look super casual. A navy pullover that picks up the blue in the skirt is draped over the model’s shoulders like a scarf, and can be worn when temperatures cool. I see a small crossbody bag that works with the palette of the outfit to finish off the look.

2. Matchy-Matchy Dress and Tote

This is a hard one to copy because you need a dress and tote in the same pattern. It’s delightful how they match! By all means combine a dress and bag in similar or complementary patterns for an equally great look. The breezy and interesting outfit is completed with dressy flat brown oxfords, which pick up the browns in the model’s hair. Unexpected and a fun touch.

3. Wide Crops, Blouse, Sandals, and Straw Bag

This is a crisp and easier look to pull together. Combine a pair of white wide crops with a fluid and breezy patterned blouse that isn’t too long. Leave it untucked. Flat brown sandals add to the relaxed vibe and bookend the model’s hair. A straw bag is a classic addition. You might prefer the outfit combination in colours that are more to your taste. Treat the look as a template and do your own thing.

4. Jeans, Tee, Anorak, Sneakers

This might not seem like a Summer look, but it can get chilly by the seaside in the middle of Summer, in which case you need to wrap up and wear layers. Living in the Pacific North West, I totally get that you need an anorak or raincoat of sorts at some point during the day when you live close to the water. Here, boyfriend jeans are combined with a striped tee, and topped with an anorak that picks up the navy and mustard stripes of the tee. The white and mustard sneakers further pick up the colours in the striped tee. Fably matched, polished and practical. Add jewellery, eyewear, bag, and watch as desired.

One-Shoulder Dressing: Yay or Nay

One-shoulder silhouettes waft in and out of fashion. We see them every season, and especially in formal wear. The silhouette has more momentum some seasons than others, and is especially popular in Summer when it’s comfortable to wear clothing with less coverage. To my eye, one-shoulder dressing is iconically classic, and has been having its fashion moment for a while. The cut is most common in formal and casual dresses, but we’re seeing it come through in jumpsuits, blouses, knitted tops, T-shirts, sweatshirts, knitwear, activewear and swimwear.

Some one-shoulder styles are skimpier than others. Sometimes one shoulder and the arm are bare, and sometimes it’s just one shoulder. Sometimes the shoulder baring component is quite modest, and other times less so. Here are some examples.

One-shoulder dressing probably means you need to wear a strapless bra, which can be annoying, although one-shoulder bras do exist. You can also wear bra cups, bra tape, or go braless if you’re comfortable with those options.

I find one-shoulder dressing stunning. Big YAY. Shoulders are gorgeous and it’s compelling to see them accentuated and uncovered. The asymmetrical aspect is artistic and interesting. There is something unexpected and glam about the vibe, and of course alluring. I like all the iterations.

Despite loving the look, I don’t have any one-shouldered wardrobe items. I’m enamoured with the one-shoulder draped knitwear from Reiss that shows one shoulder but covers the rest of the torso and arms. One of the styles is called “Angie” so that might be a sign. I keep putting the orange and blue in a shopping cart, but chicken out because I fear feeling cold and can’t wear a camisole with the top. Maybe I need to order it and wear it when it’s warm, and finally commit to getting a new strapless bra. I also like one-shoulder swimwear, and will look into that next year when I embellish my beachwear capsule.

Over to you. What do you think of one-shoulder dressing. Would you wear the look, and if not, do you like it on others?

Disappointing Naadam Knitwear

In 2020, I spotlighted Naadam as a sustainably and ethically producing knitwear brand that is committed to making high-quality clothing designed to last so that consumers pass on fewer products and ultimately create less waste. Naadam prided itself on using long fibres when creating yarn to use for their knitwear, because it makes the cashmere stronger and minimizes pilling. It’s precisely when yarn fibres are short or broken that knitwear is most prone to pilling.

I haven’t personally bought from Naadam, but some of my clients did after my endorsement. I’ve since helped these clients edit and review their wardrobes, only to find that many of the Naadam items have pilled. And it’s some of the worst pilling I’ve seen on knitwear. Most items were beyond the trouble of de-pilling with special tools at home. Maybe there were a bunch of bad yarn batches and pandemic challenges with production. Regardless of the reason, this is disappointing.

These days, purchasing knitwear that doesn’t pill is a crapshoot. The best advice I can offer is to purchase 100% cotton knitwear, because that fibre content has the best track record so far. I hope you were luckier with the quality of your Naadam knitwear than my clients were. I hope that Naadam sorts out the quality issues because their story, business model, and goals are compelling.
