Adapt Your Wardrobe to a Changing Climate

One of the biggest factors impacting our style is our climate. A wardrobe must reflect our dominant season in order to be functional. Shopping for an imaginary climate makes little practical sense.

When our climate changes, we must adapt our wardrobes accordingly. Sometimes the changes are subtle, and sometimes they are dramatic. Sometimes we enjoy the wardrobe changes, and sometimes we don’t.

For the last three years, Summers in Seattle have been hot and record-breaking. No longer mild, we are experiencing heatwave after heatwave, and it’s Summer weather right through to September. We used to be wearing boots and Fall clothing the second week of September, but not anymore.

Adapting to this new normal, I made it a style goal to embellish my hot-weather capsule. I added some pretty, breezy tops, a bias-cut skirt, two dresses, and two pairs of sandals. I’ve also been wearing my old long denim and white shorts from my beach capsule. I will continue embellishing my hot-weather capsule next year, because I’ve passed on some dresses that will need replacing. I hope to find fab non-neutral dresses, a white dress, another skirt, dip my toes into the soft wide pants trend, throw in another pair of long shorts, and refresh my beach and pool capsule.

The alarming impacts of climate change aside, I do enjoy Summer dressing and the wardrobe changes I’ve made. Our Winters are also wetter and snowier than they used to be. But I have my cold-weather dressing formulas down, and simply replenish and refresh as needed.

Over to you. Have you needed to adapt your wardrobe to a change in climate? Are you adding more hot-weather items like I am?

Vibrant and Unique in NYC

Fifty-something Debra Da Costa lives in New York City, and runs her own made-to-order clothing brand, La Canuck Kreyòl. Sporting her own creations, she wears one-of-a-kind pieces. Debra loves bright colours and creative pairings, and documents her outfits on Instagram.

“One of my fondest childhood memories is watching my mom make quilts by hand. Yes, by hand! She would use a variety of fabrics to make one quilt, which could take months. I loved the different prints, colors and hues, and textures. I was seven years old, and through this experience, my love for vibrant colors and fabrics was born.

As an avid shopper of designer threads, I used to experiment with and closely follow the latest fashion trends. But my style has evolved over the last five years. I now love to balance low- and high-priced fashion. Because of my attention to detail and obsession with striking colors, and funky prints, making clothes that I can’t find from my favorite brands or stores has become a must. As a result, I have been able to express my personal style rather than being boxed into the fast pace of fashion.

Today I would describe my style as versatile with a consistent bold undertone, and unabashedly unique with a touch of edge. And, who knows, my style may evolve in another five years. That is what I love about fashion.”

Debra’s lace sunflower blouse is a bright ray of sunshine in this casual denim outfit. She’s layered it over a black camisole tucked into on-trend and extra slouchy boyfriend jeans. The distressed denim dresses down the look while the unique blouse adds back some dressiness. The black cami matches the black flower hearts, and makes the sunny yellow sing even louder. The broad cuffs on the jeans showcase vibrant red pointy-toe cowboy boots. The red footwear and lipstick addition makes the yellow pop even more. Finally, our blogger’s gorgeous curly blunt bob amps up the WOW factor.

Debra wears neutrals and colours equally well. Here she’s paired a black tiered midi skirt with a cap-sleeved chambray shirt and black leather peplum belt. The two tiers on the skirt add volume and movement. The wide belt accentuates our blogger’s waist, and by dividing up the shirt into two parts creates the clever optical illusion of two extra tiers. This draws the eye up and down. She adds some pattern with playful black and white gingham peep-toe wedges. The gold hardware on the structured satchel, black and gold cuff bracelets, and gold watch add polished shine. Debra’s signature bright red lippy finishes off this dressy skirt look.

A patchwork dress is an easy way to pattern mix as it comes with a built-in mix of different patterns. Debra’s loose-fitting midaxi dress is easy breezy for hot days. The patches create a high contrast with each other, yet look very intentional and coherent at the same time. The flouncy elbow-length sleeves add playful volume. Our blogger takes the pattern mixing a step further by pairing the dress with black and white block-heeled sandals that combine stripes with polka dots. The shoes echo the polka dot patches and striped necktie of her dress, which ties everything together. A dressy black satchel and red lipstick complete this delightful Summer outfit.

Debra’s extra slouchy boyfriend jeans make a second appearance in this borrowed-from-the-boys look. Here, she’s wearing them with a vibrant orange crew neck sweatshirt and voluminous mixed-media bomber jacket. The bomber with high-low hemline is a mix of silky olive material and cream teddy fabric. Olive and black booties add hard edge and bookend our blogger’s dark curls. The neoprene in darker olive relates back to the jacket. The distinctive rubber tip matches the black on the circular patterned tote bag, that creates subtle texture. Orange red lipstick matches the sweatshirt and adds bright polish.

This eye-catching monochromatic look in different shades of red is divine! The combination of cool and warm-toned reds creates visual depth and interest. Debra is sporting a tomato red midi pencil skirt with flirty flounce. Her unique cherry red jacket with dramatic collar and brick-esque pattern adds tons of visual interest. The self-coloured belt cinches in the waist and adds structure. Round-toe platform booties introduce a third shade of red into the mix as they almost but not quite match the colour of the skirt. Then Debra skilfully adds two more reds with her crossbody bag and moody dark red lipstick.

Another striking skirt outfit, this time built around an olive above-the-knee flippy skirt with asymmetrical flounce. Debra has paired it with a black ribbed sweater with big turtleneck. The vertical ribbing has a lengthening effect. Our blogger’s hard-edged black rubber Chelsea booties with cheery chartreuse sole cleverly echo the colour palette of the skirt and sweater. Her midi colour-blocked coat adds gorgeous colours that work brilliantly with the base colours and brings maximal drama to this fashion-forward look.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Debra’s stunning outfits! Let us know in the comments, and be sure to browse her Instagram account for loads more style inspiration.

Fab Finds: Sandals, Slides, Skirts, Toppers

Summer is longer and hotter here in the Pacific North West than it used to be. It’s no wonder that many of my clients are stocking up on Summer merchandise, taking advantage of end-of-season sales, and embellishing their heatwave capsules. Here are some of their recent winners, and other items with good reviews that caught my eye. Many of the items are on sale.

1. Wolky Sandals

If you’re looking for supportive casual sandals for regular width and higher volume feet, Wolky sandals are an option. They are made in Portugal and great quality. Their adjustable velcro straps allow for a more forgiving fit. Most of the soles are black, so they work especially well if you wear black or can bookend your look with black hair. The hardware is silver which makes Team Silver happy. The styles are chunky, so not for Team Dainty Sandals. They make for excellent walking shoes and are surprisingly lightweight.

2. Banana Republic Utility Fleece Jacket

If you enjoy wearing shorter, soft fleece jackets in neutrals, this one is a goodie. It has worked on a range of body types and is VERY comfortable. Easy to launder too. The breast pockets are not as intrusive as they look, and the silhouette works well on a larger bust. The jacket hangs straight, and is not shaped at the waist. Might need to size down if you need a narrower fit. You’ll get an extra 15% discount on the sale price at checkout.

3. Eileen Fisher Kitts Sandal

Eileen Fisher does a version of these sandals every season, and they’ve become an iconic classic. Many of our forum members and some of clients have them, and swear by their comfort, support, flexibility, and sporty aesthetic. This version has soft knitted textured straps, and comes in a delicious and unique citron.

4. Fun Skirts

Here are some on-trend midi and midaxi skirts that won’t break the bank. If gathers, pleats, tiers, wraps, ruffles, bias-cuts, tulips, and flounces appeal to you in skirt silhouettes, now is the time to shop for them. Notably, the green Boden pleated midi has pleats that lie very flat around the waist and tummy area so they don’t pouf out. Also, the narrower styles are either cut on the bias, or have slits and vents in places that make them a lot easier to move in than expected,

5. Bueno Jesse Slide Sandal

These buttery soft slides are made in Turkey and have a smashingly comfortable footbed. The square shape of the heel and toe box give them a geometric and interesting vibe. Another nod to the ‘90s too. Chunky in a refined way. They run small so you might need to size up half a size, especially if you have wider feet. They run more true to size if you have narrower feet.

Barefoot at Home: Yay or Nay

I tried something new at home this Summer. Instead of wearing slippers or supportive house-only sneakers, I’ve been walking around in cotton footies. I hoped this would improve the strength and flexibility of the muscles and ligaments in my feet. We have tiled wooden floors, so opting for a thin but effective footie adds just enough cushioning.

My feet hurt a little in the first week, but they soon adapted and now feel better than they have in a long time. No cramping, no blisters, and no pain on the balls of my feet. I have also been able to wear sandals comfortably. I’m not sure if walking around in footies at home all Summer explains these improvements, or whether it’s the workout my feet get during yoga practice. Maybe it’s a bit of both.

Researching whether walking barefoot at home was good for your feet, I found a mix of perspectives (examples here and here). I’ve decided that for now, while my feet are feeling great, I’ll continue to walk barefoot with footies at home for the rest of Summer, so I’m a yay. I’ll be back in cosy and supportive house shoes in the Autumn.

Over to you. Do you enjoy walking barefoot, or with footies or socks at home? Does it make your feet feel better or worse?

Outfit Formula: Earthy Dresses for Fall

The heat has been record-breaking in the northern hemisphere this Summer. A cool Autumn will be a welcome change, but while some people will experience cool, crisp and rainy Autumns, others will stay hot. If you’re among the former group, sleeved dresses with bare legs and boots can be a fab way to dress in the Autumn. Add a topper if needed. If you keep the colours earthy, it will have a traditionally Fall vibe.

Of course, you can wear Fall-coloured dresses year round in seasonally appropriate fabrics. But if you enjoy wearing them to transition into Autumn, here is some outfit inspiration. These are patterned dresses, but you can also choose solid colours.

1. Elegantly Sacked

An earthy leaf-patterned unstructured shirtdress looks autumnal. The shorter length adds some structure to the dress by showcasing more leg. The mustard complement of structured satchel and espadrille slides picks up the spice colours of the pattern and adds polish to the outfit. The palette beautifully matches the model’s hair. The addition of a brown belt creates waist definition if that’s your preference. A fab way to dress on a warm Fall day.

2. Nod to the West

Wearing an earthy, flowing and soft patterned fit-and-flare midi dress with cowboy boots has a Western vibe that might be just your cup of tea. Here the boots are tall and a light neutral. But you can wear them shorter and in a darker neutral. A dark brown boot would pick up the browns in the pattern. Note the mix of jewellery. Dainty items, but many of them.

3. Pattern Mixed

This dress isn’t as earthy as the others because of the purples in the palette and Summery hibiscus flowers in the pattern. That said, if you look closely, the pattern has an earthy component. Furthermore, the animal patterned bag adds a lovely Fall touch. Black slides that match the bag are a fab way to keep it breezy on a hot Fall day. The patterned strap of the bag cleverly repeats some of the colours in the bag and dress. I love how the patterns harmonize here.

4. With Chunky Boots

Neutral animal print has a Fall integrity to it, like this more abstract one on the dress. The swooshy empire-cut silhouette is very comfortable. A pair of mid-calf and chunky tan lug sole boots create a rugged contrast with the pretty frock. They are extra fab with their sporty orange soles. The light neutral bits in the pattern perfectly pick up the light hair of the model and complement the tan boots. Combat boots are another way to go if lug soles aren’t your thing. Add jewellery, bag, eyewear, and watch as desired.
