Fashion News Roundup: November 2022

A new footwear exhibition, an interesting Peta competition, and other news from the fashion trenches in November.

Fun Fashion Fact

Did you know that legendary costume designer Edith Head not only designed the toreador pants for Audrey Hepburn in the 1957 movie “Funny Face”, and diverse styles for Grace Kelly’s very different characters in “Rear Window”, “The Country Girl” and “High Society”, but that Alfred Hitchcock admired her talent so much that he worked with her on eleven movies.

Puffy Sleeves, Four Years In

Puffy-sleeved items are gathered at the crown to create a small or large voluminous pouf. They have been a mainstream trend for a while, in blouses, tees, knitted tops, shirts, sweatshirts, dresses, knitwear, and jackets. Some versions have shoulder pads to accentuate the volume. Now that they have been going strong for several seasons, I thought I would check in to see how you’re feeling about them.

Generally, my clientele and friends have been surprisingly fond of the trend. Most are wearing some version of a puffy sleeve in a top, dress, or sweater, across dressy and casual items. Narrow-shouldered clients are especially loving puffy sleeves, but broad-shouldered clients are too. Those with a larger bust sometimes opt for a more open neckline when wearing puffy sleeves, but not always.

That said, my clients and friends don’t wear puffy sleeves exclusively, and the pouf is quite subtle. Puffy sleeves in ditsy florals are not popular, but as a solid or in a larger pattern, puffy sleeves gained momentum across the seasons across a range of body types. It was a silhouette change that felt right, they were ready for, and was easy to incorporate into their styles. Not too fancy or tricky to wear. Better than basic, quite interesting, and a little flirty and romantic.

Personally, I’m into puffy sleeves and have amassed a collection while the silhouettes are available at retail. Visually, they add that “soft and pretty” touch, which I enjoy wearing. Nostalgically, the silhouettes give me fond reminders of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Proportionally, my narrow shoulders welcome the volume. As long as the necklines are high and the sleeves don’t overwhelm me, puffy sleeves are a design detail that gets my big thumbs up. Some of my puffy sleeves are subtle, and others more dramatic.

These are the puffy-sleeved items in my wardrobe at the moment. Mostly blouses and knitwear, with a jacket and dress thrown into the mix.

Hubs Greg is adamant that he does NOT like puffy sleeves. If I show him a puffy-sleeved item on a hanger or in a photo, guaranteed he will say he doesn’t like the sleeves. But as soon as I put the item on, he loves it. In fact, the puffy sleeve denim dress here is one of his favourites. It cracks me up. I guess when something works, it’s undeniably good. Now I skip the step of showing Greg puffy-sleeved items before putting them on. I jump right to the step of modelling them.

Over to you. How do you feel about the puffy sleeve trend? Do you wear a form of puffy sleeve?

Wearing Greyed Colours

Greyed colours, or what we used to call “dirty colours” back in the ‘90s when I was a retail buyer, are colours that have been dulled with the addition of grey and black. The visual result is a more muted colour than the original. They are the opposite of clean, clear, bright and crisp colours. Greyed colours can be pastel, mid-tone, or dark.

Here are some examples. Some tones are more grey than others.

Some of my clients, friends and family members wear greyed colours to perfection. For them, these are among their best, most flattering and favourite colours. They are the dirtiest whites, greens, purples, pinks, and blues. So much so that I want to give the colour a scrub to clean it up. Yet as soon as these people put them on, magic happens. It works beautifully with their complexion and hair colour

I’ve noticed that those who wear greyed colours well tend to also wear cool-toned colours well. Many wear greys and silvers well too. Some have grey or salt and pepper hair to complement the grey in these muted colours. Others have red, black, or brown hair. Some have rosy pink cheeks, and some don’t. Their skin tones and eye colour range from light to dark.

Personally, I don’t gravitate to grey or greyed colours, and I don’t wear them well. I have a very old seafoam leather jacket that I keep because hubs Greg likes it, but it’s not that flattering. I wear it with sour brights to make it look better against my complexion. I look best in warm, clean, clear, and crisp colours. Although I wear a cool optical white, rich red burgundy, and cold dark navy well too. Solid pastels look better on me when they are saturated and not as watery. And the blush pinks in my wardrobe all have a bit of acidity to them.

Over to you. Do you like greyed colours, and do you wear them well?

Fab Finds at the Black Friday Sales

Here are items that have been winners on clients this season, that have great reviews, or caught my eye because they have fab potential. Most items are on sale, but some are not on sale yet. Browse the size and colour options.

1. Nordstrom

Here are some great items that are on sale at Nordstrom right now.

See the collection page to see the items alongside my descriptions.

2. Everlane Knitwear and Accessories

Everlane generally does a great job with their sweaters, scarves, and beanies. They are casual, on-trend, sometimes texture-rich, a fab weight, colour-rich (usually solid colours), and versatile. I discovered Everlane knitwear last year, and the cashmere pullover and beanie I got then have held up well. So I’m giving the quality a thumbs up. The accessories are unisex, and some of the sweaters are too. Size down in the knitwear.

These items worked best on my clients.

Personally, I’m trying the merino cabled sweater in green. It has wider sleeves than I usually wear, but the cropped length tempers that volume. The pullover is longer on me, and I’m completely covered. Plus I wear a camisole for insulation. The cables are spaced out, which makes them less bulky. Santa Clause may or may not have popped the three-piece striped set under the tree. The white is more creamy in person, and the items match perfectly. I look forward to wearing them together.

3. Anthropologie

Maeve Low-Slung Flared Trousers: These trousers are fabulous and VERY comfy. They are not low slung, so who knows why they are described that way. Super soft and fab for working from home or when you’re out and about. They look dressier, but have a versatile casual integrity. They can work well on a curvier figure. Love the broad ‘90s cuff. Comes in standard, petite, tall, and plus.

Maeve Colette Cropped Wide-Leg Corduroy Pants: These have worked on every client who has tried them because they mould to the contour of the body. Lots of colours. Very comfy. Comes in standard, petite, and plus.

Flat White Sheer Polka-Dot Blouse: I got this dressy blouse as part of my formal capsule and love it, although it’s not as comfy and warm as a dressy sweater. My nude-for-me bra miraculously fits perfectly under the straps of the camisole so no need to wear a strapless bra. The camisole straps are adjustable so you can adequately cover your bra. The puffy sleeves are more dramatic in person. The bow at the back of the neck is fun. I wear mine UNTUCKED over dressy pants or a skirt, and it’s sufficiently short to do so. You might need to size down. Comes in standard, petite, and plus.

Team Red or Team Purple

You are on Team Red if you prefer red to purple, and vice versa. Red includes everything from tomato red, fire engine, and watermelon, to a rich wine, brick red, claret, crimson, ruby, scarlet, and red burgundy. Purple includes everything from lavender, periwinkle, heather, mauve and lilac, to bright orchid, amethyst, violet, and deep grape, indigo, plum and eggplant. Take your pick.

As far as my friends, family and clients go, my guess is that they’d be evenly split. For some of my friends, purple is their favourite colour and it’s fun to give them purple things. I have zero purple in my wardrobe and home because it’s not a colour I gravitate to. Of course, I love it on those who enjoy wearing purple because it looks smashing and makes their hearts happy.

I bat firmly for Team Red. A sour, bright tomato red is one of my favourite and best colours. In smaller doses I wear watermelon, fire engine, wine, and red burgundies. I’ve worn bright reds my entire life, throughout the year, and don’t plan on stopping. Hubs Greg wears a deep red to perfection, and red sneakers are signature to his style. Yorkies Sam and Jo wear red harnesses, sweaters, coats, and collars. Our home decor incorporates red too. The Cox Castle bats for Team Red.

Here are the red items in my wardrobe.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team Red or Team Purple? Tell us why. It’s tradition that on the eve of Thanksgiving in the US, you can bat for both teams. If you bat for neither, you can cheer from the sidelines. I shan’t be serving a meal on the bench because I’m busy cooking veggie sides to take to friends for Thanksgiving tomorrow.

If you’re in the US, we wish you a joyful, festive and peaceful long Thanksgiving weekend. The YLF team will be taking time off till Monday, although I’ll be back on Friday with a top picks list.
