Outfit Formula: Easy Tomboy Casual

I saw this outfit and thought it was fabulous. Casual, comfortable, and on trend. It’s easy to put together if you have a Summer weight bomber jacket. One that’s silky, drapey and soft is a great option, or one that’s lacey and lightweight. The bomber is great for air conditioning, a fresh sea breeze, or when things cool down in the mornings and evenings.

Vince Camuto Floral Print Bomber Jacket

The colour palette is bold, high contrast and a little hard edged. Feel free to create the look with any colour palette. Here are the components of the formula:

Slim-fit Jeans + Blouse + Lightweight Bomber + Wrapped Sandals (sandals that “wrap around the ankle”)

The jeans need to showcase the ankle straps of the footwear so choose a cropped silhouette, or roll straight leg jeans at the hem. You’ll also want to do better than a layering tee so choose a blouse or knitted top that looks great when you take off the bomber. Leaving the top untucked is forgiving on the midsection, and follows the lines of the unzipped bomber.

To my eye, the sandals make the outfit less Tomboy. Ballet flats are a nice substitute if sandals aren’t your thing. As soon as you add flat oxfords, athletic sneakers, or chunky loafers, things look more Tomboy. Add jewellery, bag and eyewear as desired.

Weekly Roundup: Summer White Tops

I think white tops are magical. Wear a white cotton camisole under a white top to make it look richer and more saturated, or if the top is too sheer. If you overheat in a camisole, try a Second Base camisole in white or a shade of nude. They are extremely lightweight, cool and breezy. You can’t feel that you’re wearing it. If a camisole is not an option, wear a pretty white or off-white bra with ample coverage under a white top that’s a little sheer.

Here’s an assortment of white tops across a range of price points, size curves, silhouettes and fabrics. Some have worked well on my clients, while others have great reviews online. Some require camisoles and some don’t. Some are available in colours other than white.

Creating Outfits with Spring & Summer Scarves

I refreshed my Spring and Summer scarf capsule because along with chunky pearl necklaces, I’ve chosen scarves as my statement accessory this year. Here’s a collection of my current Spring and Summer scarf collection, with the exact items from my wardrobe.

Apart from the neckerchief, all my scarves are working wonderfully well. I’m not into the neckerchief trend as much as I thought I would be, and have made peace with the fact that it was a failed $13 experiment. I simply prefer the elegant drape and drama of a full, oblong scarf that I can tie in a few favourite ways. Some of the scarves are made of wool and polyester blends, but most are cotton-rich, super soft, and quite gauzy.

I prefer patterned scarves because they pack a punch. This year I fancied styles with tassels because they create a tropical vibe, and add subtle texture to an outfit. I am very particular about the colours and patterns of the scarves that eventually earn a place in my wardrobe. I have to love the pattern and colours, and the colours have to work with the palette of my wardrobe. It helps that I am consistently drawn to the same colours, so scarves are generally a good match with what’s hanging in my closet.

It’s extremely important to make sure that you like the placement of the colours and the way the pattern falls after the scarf is tied because it can look very different from when it’s folded or spread out on display in a single layer. Sometimes, the parts of the pattern that you liked best are covered once it’s tied. Make sure you tie it before you commit!

Here are four ways I like to combine my Spring & Summer scarves in outfits. The collections show the exact items from my wardrobe. The colours might look off in the pictures, but they work well in real life.

The Complement

A scarf that matches the colour of a pair of shoes and bag creates a cohesive complement that can effectively pull together an outfit. Feel free to create a complement with eyewear. Use the complement as a styling tool to add pizzazz to all sorts of top and bottom combinations. Works with dresses too. It’s an especially useful styling tool when incorporating non-neutral footwear into a look.

Tonal Harmony

I like to create a tonal palette by wearing my scarves with a top or jacket that is the same colour as the dominant colour in the scarf. Here are some examples. Tomato on tomato, blush on blush, white on white, and apple green on apple green:

Matchy-Matchy Fabness

This is a harder combination to put together because you have to find a patterned scarf in exactly the same pattern as a top. I only have one of these combinations at the moment, and I LOVE it. It feels Modern Retro, unique, and fun. I add my pearls too. In fact, I will wear my pearls with a scarf very regularly.

Pattern Mix

And last, I like to pattern mix stripes with florals. My bright scarf works well with all my Spring Summer stripes. Modern Classic and flop proof.

How to Stop Pastels Washing You Out

I believe that everyone can wear pastels. Yes, they may have the tendency to wash you out, but you can prevent that from happening by adopting one or more of these styling strategies.

1. Choose the Right Pastels

Pastels come in all colours. From mint, lilac, peach, nude and lemon, through to many different shades of pale blue and light pink. First, you need to pick a warmer or cooler pastel depending on your complexion (some can wear both.) Second you have to choose the clarity of the pastel. Does a crisp and clear pastel flatter your complexion more than a dusty and dirty pastel? And last, choose the intensity of the pastel. A saturated pastel that is bordering on a mid-tone might be the best way to go.

2. Add Dark Neutrals to the Mix

Colours change when you wear them with other colours, which is why you shouldn’t consider colours in isolation. Pastels can become very flattering when you add your best dark neutral to the outfit, like black, ink blue, navy, charcoal grey, dark olive, chocolate brown, or dark blue denim. Or throw in a favourite bright instead of a dark neutral.

3. Add White to the Palette

Optical white is the lightest and brightest neutral, which is one of the reasons it’s close to my heart. Pastels have a lot of white in them, which makes wearing them with white a harmonious combination. White brightens the complexion and strengthens pastels, making them look fresh and crisp. The effectiveness of wearing pastels with white is quite magical. Try it!

4. Strengthen the Make-Up

Wearing darker eye make-up, a richer shade of lipstick, and defining the brow line can make pastels look lovely against any skin tone. Defining and accentuating facial features with a sharper make-up regime balances the blandness of a pastel more effectively than you might expect.

5. Wear Pastels as an Accent

If none of these strategies appeal to you, simply add pastels to your outfit as accents through footwear, bags, belts, or a scarf tied around a bag. Wearing a pattern with pastel components is another way to go.

wear pastels from head to toe. My favourites are a crisp and clear light blue, blush pink and peach. They’re hard to find, but I adore a pastel neon green and yellow too. I also wear mint in the form of sea foam. I enjoy wearing pastels most when I pair them with optical white and metallics because it brightens things up, and brings out the white in the pastel. I seldom wear them with dark neutrals. I always were eye make-up and lippie, which adds drama to soft pastels. I absolutely bat for Team Pastels.

Over to you. Have I given you hope that you CAN wear pastels if you want to? Or are you steering clear of them no matter what.

Ensemble: Summer Cinnamon

This ensemble was inspired by a stylish lady I saw on the street last week. She was wearing a cinnamon or rust-coloured silk top with a gauzy tan maxi cardigan, cropped straight jeans, and wedged tan sandal booties in a luscious soft suede. She carried a giraffe-patterned tote, and wore tortoiseshell sunnies. She had a warm complexion, long auburn hair and was slightly freckled. Polished to the max wearing flawless make-up and gold jewellery. Casually elegant and fabulous.

It was fun to see earthy Autumn colours worn in a Summery way. Why not! The outfit on the left approximates the one I saw on the stylish lady. Let the creative juices flow, and think of any way to combine earth tones like cinnamon, tan, gold and brown into a Summer outfit. Cognac footwear and bag works well as the cinnamon component if wearing cinnamon is not your thing.

Cinnamon & Tan with Jeans

Combine a rust top with a tan topper and wear them over a pair of blue jeans. Choose cognac, gold or tan footwear that works with the style of the jeans. Finish off the look with an animal print, tan, cognac or gold bag.

Cinnamon Dress

Combine a rust patterned dress with a tan topper, or denim jacket. Feel free to wear the dress over cropped straight jeans, if you like that look. Choose cognac, gold or tan footwear. Finish off the look with a tan, cognac or gold bag.

Cinnamon Top & Skirt

Combine a cinnamon top with a patterned skirt in the same palette. A denim jacket or tan jacket will work as a topper, but is optional. Choose cognac, gold or tan footwear. Finish off the look with a tan, cognac or gold bag. Matching the bag with the shoes pulls the outfit together.

Ensemble: Summer Cinnamon

These combinations are for those who enjoy wearing warm colours like spicy browns. However, combining a pair of blue jeans with a white top (or blue top with white jeans), and adding cognac footwear and bag will cool down the palette for those who prefer that vibe.
