Puffy Sleeves: Yay or Nay

With the massive resurgence of ‘80s fashion, and hints of the ‘70s thrown in for good measure, puffy sleeves are on-trend. For the most part, without the shoulder pad. We saw puffy sleeves return in the early ‘00s, but not for long. This time I suspect they’ll gain more momentum because we’re living in a fashion era where almost anything goes.

Puffy sleeves are gathered at the crown of the sleeve to create volume and interest. The crown of the sleeve is at the top where the armhole attaches to the shoulder. Puffy sleeves can also be gathered at the wrist openings and cuffs to create a blouson and lantern effect. You’ll see puffy sleeves on blouses, shirts, jackets, coats, dresses and knitwear.

The collection shows puffy sleeves across a range of wardrobe items:

Puffy sleeves can be long or short, and the gathers at the crown can be subtle, regular or very voluminous. The same goes for the puff at the end of the sleeve, where the gathers can be subtle, hectic, or flare into a soft flutter sleeve.

The placement of the gathers at the crown can vary. Some gathers are placed closer to the shoulder-neck-point so the armholes are cut closer to the bust. This type of puffy sleeve adds a lot of structure to the shoulder line, thereby doing a great job of visually widening narrow shoulders OR narrowing a broad shoulder line. It’s amazing how the same silhouette can magically create the opposite effect by neutralizing proportions.

Gathers of puffy sleeves that are placed at the end of the shoulder point or beyond the shoulder point on dropped armholes tend to widen the shoulder line. Unless the necklines are tight and covered, this creates a sloppy shoulder line on narrow shoulders, and can visually widen broad shoulders.

Puffy sleeves can work well with a range of bust sizes. Generally, larger bust sizes are suited to puffy sleeves that are gathered closer to the shoulder-neck-point with a V-neck, shirt collar, or lower neckline. A soft flutter sleeve with a gathered crown and V-neck can look gorgeous on a larger bust. Puffy sleeves and a high neckline can add curve to a small bust.

The volume of the sleeve on the wrist or cuff can vary too. The more voluminous the sleeve of a top, the more dramatic it looks, but the harder it is to layer under toppers and knitwear with regular sleeves. Capes, capelets, cocoon coats, and wraps to the rescue. You could probably shove most puffy sleeves into a puffer coat or jacket.

My friends and clients run the gamut when it comes to puffy sleeves. Some won’t wear them at all because they look precious, cowgirl, or juvenile. Some feel the puff makes them look wider on the shoulder and larger on the bust. Others will wear subtle versions in soft fabrics that minimize the volume of the gathers. Some have a deep affection for any type of puffy sleeve because it looks interesting, dandy, maximal and pretty.

I adore wearing puffy sleeves, but the gathers on the crown have to be set close to the shoulder-neck-point because only then does the silhouette widen my narrow shoulders and give me lots of structure. Other types of puffy sleeves either layer poorly under toppers, or make my shoulder line look sloppy. I’ll wear puffy sleeves in any wardrobe item as long as the shoulder line is strong. I currently have two puffy sleeve tops and am happy to add more. I’m a big YAY. How about you?

Florals and Midis in Buckinghamshire

Hayley Hall (36) is a brand consultant and blogger who lives in Buckinghamshire. She is a midi skirt and dress gal at heart who loves floral prints and vibrant colours. Hayley is a Modern Classic dresser who likes to mix retro and romantic touches into her style. Her stunning blue eyes and red locks are just as signature as her marvelous collection of skirts and frocks.

“I’ve definitely honed my style and learned not to force things that are ‘on-trend’ if they don’t suit my shape; comfort really is key as you get older, rather than spending most of the day holding together a too-small wrap dress or almost falling over in shoes that give you blisters. I’ve learned to embrace my small waist and big hips through midi dresses and skirts, that investing in handbags will make any outfit look expensive, and that nobody should be afraid of patterns. I guess my style could be described as classically elegant, but without being overly girlie — I adore patterns, florals and floaty fabrics, but I like to toughen them up with different textures and accessories.”

Hayley Hall - 1

Florals are Hayley’s fashion go-to and she rocks them like it’s nobody’s business. Here ’s wearing a full midi skirt with amazing ditsy floral pattern in gorgeous pinks, reds and blues on a black background. For a cool Spring day she’s paired it with a cosy sweater in a light grey that doesn’t match but works well with the skirt colours. Tucking the oversized sweater showcases the high waist of the skirt and lengthens the leg line from the hips upward. White sneakers add an on-trend sporty touch. The black leather moto jacket creates touch edge by cleverly juxtaposing the romantic floral print. A blush chain-strap shoulder bag picks up the pink in the skirt.

Hayley was thrilled to find this wrap dress that works great for a curvy figure. The striking floral print in shades of yellow and blue accentuate our blogger’s blue eyes and red hair. Design details like the black contrast waist tie and flared three-quarter sleeves add visual interest. The tie closure emphasizes Hayley’s waist while providing extra support and keeping the wrap style in place all day. The slip peeking out from the neckline adds subtle allure: it’s Hayley’s secret weapon to feel comfortable and confident all day while minimising static. She keeps the finishing touches neutral with nude block heel sandals, a simple necklace and straw circular bag with wood handle.

Hayley Hall - 3

A leopard print dress makes quite the style stament, especially when it comes in an unexpected colour like this pink and black number. The self tie on this gorgeous pleated shirtdress accentuates our blogger’s waist, while the blouson sleeves add feminine charm. Black velvet ankle boots create textural interest. So do the black sheer hose that minimize horizontal lines because they’re the same colour as the footwear. The jauntily tilted black beret bookends the boots and provides a touch of retro Parisian sass. A structured black satchel with metal stud trim and soft pink lipstick finish off the look.

Hayley Hall - 4

A head-to-toe neutral look with cheery colourful accents. Hayley wears a greige empire-waist dress that hits her just above the knee. The green embroidered waistband and red trim on the neckline and flutter sleeves add a fun pop of colour. The horizontal band emphasizes the narrowest part of the torso, then the fabric floats away from the body — a breezy silhouette for hot days. The buttons on the lower part of the dress and boho-esque oversized tassels draw the eye up and down. The tassels on the rose gold slide sandals cleverly echo the ones on the dress. A circle basket bag fits the Summery vibe perfectly. The finishing touch is Hayley’s polished make-up with soft reddish-brown lippy that complements her red locks.

Hayley Hall - 6

Another stunning floral frock! This one with a darker colour palette of mustard, tan, purple and cream, which makes it perfect for Fall and Winter. This statement midi dress has a flattering V-neckline and elasticated waist to give it shape and structure. Hayley pairs the dress with cognac suede booties that echo the mustard in the dress. A textured tan shoulder bag with gold chain strap subtly adds another colour into the mix. Once again Hayley uses a black leather biker jacket to toughen up the floral pattern and create some edge. Simple bangles, impeccable make-up and our blogger’s signature hair are all that’s needed to complete this polished casual look.

When asked which F/W 2019 trend she is looking forward to the most, Hayley said:

“Yellow is set to be huge this year, and I’m excited to see different shades of mustard and lemon take over the high street. I think yellow chunky knits look amazing with denim, but also investing in a statement houndstooth yellow coat will instantly update every look and ensure you look like you’ve made a serious effort; my favourite thing to do in autumn is to wear all black and then chuck on a punchy overcoat!”

Hayley Hall - 5

Hayley casualizes a dressy lace midi skirt by wearing it with a cream knit sweater, which also adds cosy warmth on cool Spring days. The elegant full midi skirt is almost ankle length and a delicious shade somewhere between blush and apricot. Tucking the fluid-fit sweater creates structure and lengthens the leg line. Pairing it with ankle-strap pointy-toe flats in a low-contrast shade of blush does the same. Choosing a bag in a third shade of blush with antique gold chain strap creates extra outfit depth. A classic trench in stone with pink undertones is a great option if you’re after a dressy topper that works well for in-between weather. Rosy-peach lipstick and polished make-up complete the look.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Hayley’s fabulous style. Let us know in the comments, and be sure to visit her blog to browse the rest of her wonderful outfits.

Shopping My Closet for “New” Items

I’ve been wearing many of my older items this year. In many cases I haven’t worn them in recent seasons, so it feels like I’ve added new items to my wardrobe. Only they required zero shopping effort, fit perfectly right away, and didn’t cost a cent.

The exact wardrobe oldies and golden oldies are represented in the collection below. They lived happily with the rest of my wardrobe, and weren’t stashed away in a holding zone or separate closet. They fell out of favour simply because I was feeling different or newer wardrobe items more that season. Yet when they were reviewed during monthly closet edits, they continued to earn a place in my wardrobe because they sparked joy despite lack of wear. That’s why I don’t believe in passing on wardrobe items that are left unworn for a season or more IF you still love them, they fit, and they are in good nick.

My seven year old navy Theory blazer became my best travel topper for long flights. The short neon coat and citron trench coat were wonderfully warm during our chilly Spring, and fit well over the slim-fitting tops and knitwear I’ve been wearing this year. The old seafoam leather jacket and cropped twinset are fab with newer high-rise bottoms because they are short.

When I bought the red loafers three years ago, I triplicated in white and blush. I wore the white into the ground right away, the blush next, and the red the least. This year, I haven’t worn the white or blush at all, and I’ve worn the red a lot. They have a matching red belt that went virtually unworn for three years because I wasn’t into belts. But I bought the belt anyway because tomato red belts with gold hardware are hard to find. This year, my old red belt and loafers are workhorses with the addition of a few new pairs of wide crops.

I bought a navy and burgundy Furla satchel about three years ago. The burgundy became an instant workhorse, while the navy rarely came out to play. This year, the burgundy hasn’t come out at all, and I reach for the navy often because I like the way it neutralizes my extra bright and somewhat maximal 2019 outfits.

I’ve had the plaid shirt for years, and wore it a few times around the holidays. This year, I much preferred sporting it in the Summer with white jeans and red accents because why not! You don’t have to reserve tartan for Christmas.

And last, my ten year old grey pinstriped Theory suit came out to play with citron sneakers and bag after hibernating for six years. My five year old white flares made a smashing re-debut at a dinner party last week with new Stella McCartney zipper top and cream Vagabond booties.

I find it satisfying and fun to shop my closet for old items that haven’t seen much wear recently. Rediscovering them and wearing them feels like I got an extra wardrobe stash for Christmas. Incorporating them into outfits in new ways and with new items is refreshing and panders to my need to be creative. Absence can absolutely make the heart grow fonder.

Weekly Roundup: Assorted Items

Here are some items that have worked well on clients and forum members recently, or just caught my eye. I’m thrilled to see the abundance of colour and pattern this season, especially online. There is plenty of variety if you don’t fancy oh-so-trendy earth tones and animal print, or neutrals like black and grey. Be sure to check out all the colour and size options.

  • Old Navy Striped Poplin Popover Tunic Shirt for Women: A good popover shirt for petites with a larger bust. The cuffs fold back and look architectural. Comes in a pink stripe.
  • Maeve | Anthropologie Parkside Knit Dress: The flattering effect of these diagonal lines is SUBLIME. They accentuate OR flatten curves depending on your preference. Super comfy, elegant, and you don't need a flat midsection to wear it. Looks amazing with animal print flats too.
  • Casi Myra Bootie: Fun flat red boots with trendy square toe that are comfy and nicely made. They need another cushioning insole so that your feet don't feel so close to the ground. Quite wide in the toe box. I found them to run TTS and not small like the review mentions. Lovely deep blue-red.
  • NASHELLE 14k-Gold Fill Initial Mini Circle Necklace: Monogrammed necklaces are in and here to stay. Another iconic classic having its trendy moment. This type of dainty necklace can layer well with others, and looks a lot nicer than I expected. I wear a similar dainty monogrammed necklace almost daily with my pearls these days. Why not!
  • Barbour Millfire Diamond Hooded Quilted Jacket: A great jacket for a curvy hourglass. Plenty of room, and some shape thanks to back elastic contouring. Practical, polished, classic, and fab.
  • NEUVILLE NEUVILLERio Satchel: Metallic green bags are hard to find, and this one is adorable. It's less dressy in person, and not too big. It has an extra comfy wide crossbody strap that looks hip. Comes in red and silver. The red is more muted in person.
  • Caslon Jamie Perforated Bootie: These perforated booties are good for transitional weather or mild Fall & Winter weather. Of course, you can wear hosiery and knee-highs for insulation too. They are comfy and work on regular volume feet. Casual, yet neat and tidy.
  • DICKIES Relaxed Fit Carpenter Pants: I got these in red and they are fun, comfy and different. They are baggy in the thighs and legs but reasonably fitted in the seat and waist. They'll work for a curvier figure because of the room in the thighs and bottom. They bag out a bit during the day because they're 100% cotton. Moderate quality, and definitely needs a press after wash and air-dry. Comes in four colours.
  • Sole Society Dwani Faux Leather Satchel: Fab non-leather bag in a two-toned floral and structured silhouette. Comes in solids.
  • Blanc Noir Hooded Moto Blazer with Faux Leather Sleeves: Super cute "hard edge" hooded moto with LENGTH that's comfy, streamlined, and works well on a curvy figure.
  • Halogen Double Ring Leather Belt: Try a double-ring belt if you're a belt wearer. Available in neutrals.
  • Anthropologie | Anthropologie Gale Merino Pullover: A swingy pullover is a great way to wear an untucked top with interest. The silhouette works quite well for a larger bust because of the wider neckline. Arty and fun. NOT streamlined, so consider yourself warned.
  • Anthropologie | Anthropologie Wanda Cardigan: This is a good cropped cardigan to wear over skirts and dresses because it's short AND interesting. Its straight drape is architectural, and the V-neck works on most body types. The side vents are different. You can wear the cardigan buttoned up like a top too. Comes in colours.
  • Bl-nk | Anthropologie Honning Knit Pullover: This is for chartreuse lovers who run warm because of the short sleeves. Fab oversized drape with just enough tailoring in the neck and length of the sleeves. Works well on a larger bust, and/or broader shoulders. Of course, you can layer something warm and streamlined underneath.
  • Anthropologie | Anthropologie Dallas Carpenter Joggers: If you have a mild Fall or Winter, these chino-carpenter-jogger hybrids are a fun addition. They fit a curvier or straighter figure quite well, and come in olive.
  • Halogen Bias Cut A-Line Skirt: The best bias cut skirt I've seen this year. Nice to the touch crepe fabric. The drape and fit are GREAT. Really good on a curvy body type because the bias cut is more circular than tubular. No bumps. They did not skimp on the cut! As good on a straighter body type because it moulds to the contour of the body. Runs big if you need a narrow fit. Available in other patterns and colours. Some fabrics are nicer than others.
  • Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Gore-Tex Waterproof Lugged High Top Sneaker: These are beautifully made, and weatherproof because of a Gore-Tex finish. Gorgeous quality. SUPER cute on the foot in a chunky trendy way. They are warm, and will fit most feet because of the ample room and lacing. Extremely comfy. They fit low-volume feet like mine with thick insoles to take up width. NO ZIP, but the hiking hooks make taking them on and off a lot easier. The thick soles do make them heavier than my other three pairs of leather and weatherproof hi-top Converse, but it's not a train smash. The yellow is more mustard in person. Comes in black and burgundy too. Burgundy is available on the Converse site. The mustard earned a place in my wardrobe, and I've worn them several times already.
  • Boden Bella Ponte Top: A fab fitted knit top for a mild Autumn or Winter because it does not layer well under a jacket or cardigan. Fine under a coat with roomier sleeves. Comes in five colours. Pretty!
  • Boden Andrea Jacquard Tunic: A comfy, cosy and streamlined tunic to wear over skinnies, straights, cropped straights, leggings or cropped flares. Four fab colours. Make sure the length of the sleeves works under your toppers. Not good on pear shapes, unless you are slightly pear shaped.
  • Boden Tara Jersey Shirtdress: A comfortable knitted dress that works in mild weather and is best on a straighter body type. Casual and polished. Fab with white sneakers.
  • L'Amour Des Pieds Fruma Lace-Up Boot: These '90s inspired booties work well on regular volume feet with bunions. Roomy in the toe box in all the right places. Rugged, yet crisp.
  • Boden Abigail Jersey Dress: A comfy and flattering dress on an assortment of body types, although best on a regular and smaller bust. Plenty of length for tall gals. Fab for Fall and Winter with booties, hosiery, and long cardigan, or midi coat.
  • ELOQUII Wrap Waist Jersey Midi Dress: A beautifully flattering and pretty dress that comes in black. Can work on a larger bust. Elegant and comfortable. Layers well under a cashmere wrap, or cape.
  • Miz Mooz Miz MoozLetty: A good shoe for a wider foot, and very comfy too. A fab cool-toned red. Comes in teal on the Nordstrom website.
  • Dansko XP 2.0 Clog: If you enjoy wearing Dansko clogs - try a trendy pair in floral patent. They are super cute under full-length bootcuts and flares.
  • Geox Leelu High Top Sneaker: These are very comfy on a regular and slightly wider foot. A glitzy sneaker with lots of interest, and comes in black. Tailored on the foot.
  • Karen Platform Sneaker: A refined and on-trend flatform sneaker that's comfy, works on a range of feet, and is a slam dunk worn with bootcuts and flares.
  • Banana Republic High-Rise Wide-Leg Jean: These flares look great on a curvier and straighter body type. The rise is long, but not too long for my shorter rise. The length that they are showing with the sneakers is fashion-forward and practical. Very roomy in the legs, and fitted on the midsection and seat. Stinking cute new trendy silhouette, which earned a place in my wardrobe. I LOVE these, and am wearing them a lot with a TUCKED top to showcase the structure on the midsection and bottom. I like how the fabric floats around my thighs instead of clinging to them. Fab with flat boots and chunky sneakers.
  • LE STELLE Evie Water Resistant Faux Leather Moto Jacket with Removable Faux Fur Collar: I haven't seen this in person, but it looks gorgeous, and could be fab over skirts and dresses.
  • FRAME Shirred Shoulder Tee: This is for Team "80s. It looks SO good with a bit of lace camisole peaking out from under the low V-neck. Comes in navy too. Quite fitted.
  • Nili Lotan Shon Stretch Cotton Pants: These lantern pants look stinking cute on my curvier petite client. They look good on a straighter figure too. Avant-Garde Fabness. If you like fun casual pants, and don't mind a bit of volume - try them. They run a size big.
  • SOL SANA Megan Wedge Oxfords: These trendy platform and wedged oxfords are very comfy and can work on feet with bunions if your feet aren't too wide. Extremely fun and trendy under big baggy pants, wide crops and wide full-length pants.

Outfit Formula: Hot & Cold

Spicy earth tones are trending big time at the moment. Although some are cool, they are generally warm colours. And when I was in the Netherlands last month, retail stores were packed with the new season’s warm earth tones. The Dutch customer loves their blues, so earth tones were remixed with all shades of blue, and with shades of white for good measure. It made for a delightful mix of hot and cold and inspired this post.

Some of these hot and cold combinations might make you rethink your “I can’t wear warm earth tones” point of view.

1. Mustard Bottom

Wear pumpkin mustard bottoms, like a skirt and pair of pants or jeans, and combine it with a top in a shade of white and a blue denim jacket. If denim jackets aren’t your thing, try a navy, light blue, French blue or cobalt topper. The model’s black hair bookends her boots, and adds another cool shade to the mix. The animal print bag picks up the black and the mustard.

M&S Collection Pleated Midi Skirt

2. Cognac Accents

Combine any top and bottom in shades of blue and white, and finish off the look with earthy cognac footwear and headgear to match. If headgear is not your thing, add a cognac bag to pull together the outfit. Combining blue jeans with a blue and white top is another way to go.

Scotch & Soda Mixed Artwork Sweatshirt

3. Cinnamon Bottom

The addition of cool-toned silver and grey is unique in this mix. Combine a navy and white top with cinnamon bottoms, and add a light grey topper. A navy and white scarf adds interest. Here the navy and white sneakers do a great job of repeating the colours in the tee. The orange in the trim of the sneakers complements the cinnamon bottoms.

Anthropologie Jefferson High Rise Slim Utility Pants

4. The Clash

The clash of hot and cold colours in this cardigan is bold and different. To my eye, there is harmony because of carefully repeated colours. The dark denim is neutral. The black belt and boots create an effective complement. The camisole repeats the earthy olive and khaki of the cardigan. The cobalt of the cardigan brings out the blue in the model’s eyes. The burgundy is ever so slightly repeated in the model’s lips. Clever! Add jewellery, eyewear, and watch as desired.
