Spotlight: Bleu by Rod Beattie

Bleu by Rod Beattie is a fabulous contemporary swimwear line. Designer Rod Beattie is inspired by his Southern California roots and his love of travel. The brand’s handwriting is a combination of modern classics with clean lines, no-nonsense solids, bright colours, bold prints, and interesting on-trend design details.

Beattie says that when he’s putting together a collection, he’s “thinking of a chic woman of any age.”

Bleu offers bikinis, tankinis, one-pieces, and cover-ups across a range of colours, silhouettes, and sizes. There are as many quiet, simple and streamlined solids as there are bold and bright looks, so take your pick. The extensive selection of silhouettes offers two important features that I personally look for in swimwear: COVERAGE and SUPPORT. Designs are alluring, cheerful and modern, but with extra fabric and support in all the right places. It’s amazing how effective thoughtful design can be. Clever coverage around the seat, midsection and bust can make all the difference to feeling more secure and confident when you’re exposed and moving around in a bathing costume.

Sizes run from a US4 to US22. But like most swimwear, fits can run small or large depending on the style and how your body fits the silhouettes. My hope is that they extend their size range in both directions. Tops are offered in D and DD cups, although a slightly smaller and larger cup size can comfortably fit the sizes too. Tops and bottoms are sold separately so that a wearer can find the right size and proportion for their body type. Personally, I will only purchase a bikini if the top and bottom is sold separately, and the top comes in cup and width sizes. That way I can achieve a much more comfortable and flattering fit.

Bleu swimwear is generally less constricting than styles from other popular brands on YLF, like Miraclesuit and La Blanca. They are sometimes more playfully designed and colour-rich too. I like the additions of thoughtfully designed and matching cover-ups. When added to your bathing costume, they can amp up the polish and make you feel more pulled together. When I can, I try to buy a matching cover-up with my swimwear. I love a good match.

Unfortunately, I can’t find info on whether the items are sustainably and ethically produced, but I’m hoping so. So if you’re looking for new swimwear, remember the Bleu by Rod Beattie brand. You can purchase online from their site, from department stores, and some small swimwear stores.

Summer Linen and Your Style

Woven linen is the quintessential Summer fabric and very popular in Europe across ladies and menswear as soon as temperatures rise. I can’t think of a breezier and more classic Summer fabric than linen. It screams beach vacation, the turquoise Mediterranean sea, and the Italian Amalfi Coast. Linen is available in every colour and in some great patterns across almost all Summer wardrobe items. When lightweight, it’s a great fabric as a cover-up for sun protection.

The downside of fabrics that are 100% or rich in linen is that they are very prone to creasing. You have to be at peace with the crease when you wear them. They can also be a little hard, stiff, scratchy, and heavy. But there’s a lot of lovely linen that’s soft to the touch, light, and gentle against the skin. Linen blends that reduce the high wrinkle factor are available too. But you tend to lose the natural integrity of linen when it’s combined with synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon. Linen blended with silk, viscose, cotton and rayon keeps the fabric natural. Personally, I like linen that’s remixed with cotton. It’s really soft, delicate, breathable, and feels luscious against the skin.

Knitted linen tees and sweaters can be nice in linen blends. In my experience linen knits don’t crease as much, and drape better than their woven cousins. I like the gauzy and texture-rich appearance of linen knitwear.

My clientele, friends and family vary greatly on how linen features in their style. Linen knits are generally more popular than linen wovens. Some love it and wear it all Summer long, and some won’t wear linen at all. Some will wear it in tops and knits, and that’s it. Some will wear one linen item at a time, but not head-to-toe. Some like to wear linen bottoms but not the tops. And some wear linen dresses.

I always have linen in my wardrobe, and usually in tops and dresses. Hubs Greg wears long-sleeved linen shirts with scrunched sleeves in the Summer with jeans, cotton pants, or shorts. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s I wore a LOT of woven linen across all sorts of colours. I wore linen tops, pants, skirts, waistcoats, dresses, long shorts, and jackets, which worked very well in the hot Cape Town heat. The offices and factories I worked in were not always air-conditioned, making linen a saving grace. Many around me wore linen, so I looked appropriately creased with everyone else.

Personally, I don’t mind linen creasing one bit. I find it to be part of the charm, and soothing in a carefree way. Relaxed, yet chic. A familiar fabric I grew up with. I mind the creasing a little more in pants and a jacket, but would still wear them if I loved the item.

I have some woven linen shirts at the moment and not much else. But that can change. If we have another hot and sunny Seattle Summer without air conditioning, I’ll be focussing on some lightweight linen tops and dresses.

Over to you. How does linen feature in your style?

Outfit Formula: Quiet Roomy Shirt

It’s a woven shirt season, and all types of shirts are having their fashionable moment. From Modern Classic tailored styles and gently fluid looks, to very fluid and oversized silhouettes, across all sorts of lengths and with varying degrees of architectural drape. Hems can be asymmetrical, staggered, curved or straight. Most shirts are collared, and their design details vary. Some are simple and others more complex. Most quiet roomy shirts are in neutrals like white, black, grey, navy, light blue, and subtle neutral pinstripes or self-coloured dots.

They make a quiet on-trend statement in a neutral. The roomy fit can range from fluid to oversized so take your pick. Very comfortable and easy to style in outfits. Here’s a good assortment of examples.

You can wear the fluid and oversized styles as is, in which case asymmetrical hems will add a little structure by tempering the volume. Soft fabrics will drape closer to the body which further tempers their boxiness. You can tie the front into a loose square knot, or semi-tuck the front, to hint at some waist definition. As for the collars, wear them buttoned to the top, or open at the collar. A white camisole will make a white shirt look more rich and bright. A little camisole lace peeking out from under the shirt is pretty too.

Here are some easy combinations across a range of quiet roomy shirts.

1. Sneakers and Slim Jeans

Combine a roomy tunic shirt with a pair of slim-fit jeans, and finish off the look with a pair of fashion sneakers. The white top and shoes complement each other here, but feel free to choose any neutral. Throw in a neutral or non-neutral bag, and finish off the outfit with fun earrings, necklace, or arm candy. Think ballet flats, mules, sandals or loafers if fashion sneakers aren’t for you.

Sneakers and Slim Jeans

2. Smart Casual

This version is dressier because of the tailored torso fit of the peplum shirt that flares into a roomier fit below the waist. The jeans are slim to offset the volume and add some casual. Footwear is dressy to add back the smart. Add accessories of your choice to complete the look.

Smart Casual

3. Athleisure

Combine a quiet and long roomy shirt with a pair of Athleisure joggers. Leggings will work too. The asymmetrical hem here makes the outfit more interesting and creates a magical diagonal line across the front of the body, thereby providing a subtle form of structure. Fashion sneakers with white soles match the white of the top. The snakeskin is a fun addition. My favourite part here is how beautifully the silver-haired model wears white, and how the white soles of the sneakers bookend her look.

Athleisure

4. Relaxed Dressy

The architectural cut of this particular roomy quiet shirt is fabulous. It’s straight but curved, asymmetrical and tailored in interesting places. A top that needs to stay untucked to showcase the shape. Dark blue looks great with black, and provides an alternative to a column of black. These bottoms are dressier long shorts, but feel free to choose your own version of black bottoms like a skirt, jeans, or pair of pants. Here are some examples.

Dressy footwear makes the look dressier, but heels are not essential. Dressy flats are fab. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Relaxed Dressy

I’m a collared and woven shirt gal because the silhouette is a slam dunk for my body type, and crisp woven fabric makes me happy. I have a large collection of roomy shirts because they are my go-to tops for warm and hot weather. They are my “T-shirts”. Covered, breezy, natural fibres, very comfortable, and dressier than a T-shirt. The untucked oversized and architectural silhouettes will work on my slight frame when the collars and sleeves are tailored, and I scrunch the sleeves to show some skin. Sometimes I semi-tuck for a little structure. Here are the quietest roomy shirts from my shirt capsule. I wear them with blue and white jeans, checked warm weather pants, patterned jeans, and some patterned skirts. Sometimes I pop a lace camisole underneath to amp up the pretty.

Spotlight: Cool Planet by Steve Madden

US footwear brand Steve Madden, which is based in Long Island City NY, recently launched a sustainable and ethical footwear brand called Cool Planet. The range is starting out small by offering on-trend sneakers and sandals in a variety of colours for Spring and Summer. Prices range between $50 to $80, and you can see the full range on the site. Like many fashion brands and retailers these days, there is a genuine attempt to produce and distribute in a way that is kinder to our planet. These are big steps in the right direction.

To quote Steve Madden: “Our shoes are for a generation that believes in a world where fashion and sustainability live together. Where using less, reusing more, and being transparent defines the status quo.

With Cool Planet, Steve Madden is leveraging the power of fashion to be a global force for good. They are making their sustainability reports public too.

Steve Madden is committed to incorporating better materials into their products and packaging, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions across their supply chain, and reclaiming used products once they’ve served their purpose. I particularly like their recycle footwear programme, which encourages you to drop off unwanted shoes in their Shoecycle boxes for recycling. On the packaging side, their boxes and bags are made of post-consumer waste, and are 100% recyclable. The brand also did its bit by generously donating PPE to our COVID-19 healthcare heroes, and helping out at homeless shelters, all this despite being hard hit themselves as a retailer surviving the global pandemic. Impressive.

I’m thrilled that a big footwear supplier like Steve Madden is making sustainable and ethical changes to their business practices, AND keeping their prices on the more affordable side. Many of the sustainable and ethical footwear brands are three to four times the price, which makes things tricky. It’s my hope that Steve Madden will make the entire brand sustainably and ethically over time and continue with their price points. If the Cool Planet brand is not to your taste at the moment, keep them on your radar anyway because you never know how a brand’s handwriting will change over time. Generally, Steve Madden footwear is too wide and not sufficiently cushioning for my own low-volume feet. But in the spirit of leaving no retail stone unturned, I will happily keep looking at their styles because I appreciate their new business model.

Hoodies Under Toppers: Yay or Nay

This vibe is about wearing a hoodie under a jacket or coat, taking the hood out from under the topper, and featuring it quite prominently in the outfit. The visual effect creates a statement collar of sorts.

The hoodies can be of the very casual sweatshirt and T-shirt variety, or a little dressier in a wool blend or cashmere. Hoodie fits can be anything from oversized to gently fluid. The toppers can be jackets or coats, dressy or casual, and in any colour or pattern. Some jackets have built-in hoodies, or dickey hoodies that are detachable. The combinations are endless. Here are some good examples.

You can wear a thicker hoodie under a roomy coat, but need to keep the hoodie streamlined under dressier jackets. A hooded T-shirt can work too. Fluid-fit hoodies in substantial but not too thick fabrics are versatile. Creating a high contrast between hoodie and topper is the usual way to go, because it makes the hoodie stand out. But feel free to create a lower contrast.

I love this look and vote YAY. I think it’s interesting, sporty in a less casual way if you wear dressier toppers, and is comfortable to boot. I like all renditions from super casual to smart casual, and the interesting Sporty Luxe juxtapositions you can throw together too.

I have a few sweatshirt loungewear hoodies, but those aren’t used to create this look. Instead I prefer to add a dressier touch with two more refined hoodies. One is a cashmere stripe, and the other is a funnel neck that gives the impression of a hoodie. Both have very neat necklines that keep the look polished. I wear them under my dressy and casual coats and jackets and add my pearls. I wear jeans, dressy pants, and a few skirts for bottoms. I’d like to wear a hoodie under a suit with fashion sneakers, but don’t have the right components yet.

I see a lot of very casual hoodies layered under casual toppers on the streets of Seattle. It’s like a uniform for many people, including hubs Greg. I see the dressier and Sporty Luxe versions less frequently, but they make their way to the streets too.

Over to you. Are you a yay or a nay for wearing hoodies under toppers?
