i can’t answer this question! i just discovered lancome la laque fever. they call it “lipshine” and file it under “lipcolor”. by texture, it goes on as a gloss but with a more subdued shine and no stickiness. wears like a long lasting lipstick but coverage is more sheer like a gloss.

since i have to pick one…gloss?

I am a lip balm gal. I’m afraid I’m one of those who got addicted early in life to having that moisture on my lips, at all times.
I don’t know if lipsticks have changed enough over the years for me to be able to wear them alone. I have never tried a lipstick that didn’t actually suck the moisture right out of my lips giving me chapped lips.
I know the stickiness of lip gloss is hard to get used to but it didn’t stop me from collecting them and have about 20 of those little tubes. I guess I’m alawys hoping to find that special product that will give the polished look I want, without side effects.

I have a whole bunch of lipstick from my mom’s Lancome samples over the years, but I never ever wear it. I’m on the bench – if anything is on my lips it’s lipbalm, but I prefer to go bare.

Lip Gloss, pretty much all the time! But I’m super picky about the brand, because I don’t like sticky formulas either. One I’ve found that never fails me is Fresh Sugar gloss, which moisturizes like their awesome Sugar lip balm but with a pretty gloss shine. Cherry is my fave right now, its just the right sheer red.

I’m team Burt’s Bees Lipbalm! Although generally I go without anything.

Something fun I tried recently was staining my lips with a beet (since that was for dinner anyway). It was a nice color, although a bit too pink for my taste.

Team gloss. I do not find all glosses are sticky and I like the shine. Lipstick dries out my lips and requires me to use a lip-liner since my lips are uneven. Gloss is not as specific to apply.My favorite lip-gloss right now is a tinted version by L’Occitane.

Definitely gloss/lipbalm. I hate lipstick with a passion as I find it collects in the corners of my mouth, never looks fresh for long and besides, I have braces on my teeth at the moment so I don’t especially like drawing attention to my mouth.

Team Lip Balm! I can’t function with my sweet smelling (and tasting) Lip Smackers lip balm. I know it’s rather childish (esp. when I whip out the jumbo version in Strawberry), but it has the best consistency!

After that, I’m team lip stain, which I end up layering with lip balm anyway – so, right back to team lip balm!

Every once in awhile I go with lipstick layered with gloss, but it doesn’t have the staying power I demand in a lip product!

If I use anything (usually in winter), it’s one of the lighter-weight (not waxy) lip balm, with or without a tint. DHC makes a really nice one that looks white but changes to a color on the lip. I don’t like glosses either; own a few lipsticks for special occasions. Fortunately my lips have a decent amount of color to them so I don’t really need to wear anything!

I think this is actually the easiest poll for me. I am definitely Team Gloss. I do own lipstick, but only about 3 tubes. I own at least 3 times as many glosses. Lipstick just dries my lips out too much and, for me at least seems to get all over the place. (I don’t know – maybe I’m a messy eater). Also, I don’t wear a lot of make-up, so I like how understated and sheer lip gloss is.

I will say though that I’m totally on board for the hatred of sticky glosses. For myself I’ve found that Clarins makes a good non-sticky gloss and for drugstore brands I like the Burts Bees glosses.

Lipstick — preferably the long-lasting paint on kinds. Just rub a little moisturiser on my lips first, and I’m fine. I can’t stand stickiness — and I like to be able to kiss people without leaving my mark!

I’ve had some lip glosses that were sticky, but not all are. I like lip glosses from EcoSevi.com because they feel great (plus they ingredients are healthy, vegan, and eco-friendly — which is good considering how much lip gloss I eat off my lips).

I have small lips so I tend to play up my eyes and go au naturale with the lips. When I know that I will be photographed from far away- a wedding, or shower, family reunion- that’s when I might bust out the color.

Because I am a lip balm girl though I stick with lip liner. I fill in my lips with it because it doesn’t come off as I compulsively apply lip balm throughout the day. It also stays off my teeth. For some reason gloss or stick ends up across my pearly whites. Lip liner seems to be the only thing that stays in place for me.

Lipstick! I can’t stand the stickiness of the lipgloss. However, I really like the shine of lip gloss as well, so here is my compromise. Dior Addict High Shine:

It goes on very smoothly and is super shiny like lipgloss but it’s not sticky at all. I find it very moisturizing as well. This is my only cosmetics splurge. I am a drugstore girl through and through but I don’t mind spending a good chunk of moment on my favorite lipstick since I cannot wear any other lipcolor.

Lipgloss is evil! I have super fine flyaway hair and I always have hair stuck to my lips with a gloss. And it doesn’t stay. I occasionally wear lipstick, particularly on special occasions. I have big lips and can’t really pull off anything darker than my natural color without clown mouth unless I am wearing lots of other makeup to balance it out. So most days I am chapstick girl. I don’t reapply though, usually only in the morning and night.

That’s easy. Lip balm with sunscreen and lipstick. I’ve tried gloss over and over and over: it’s just too sticky and doesn’t seem to moisturize, just sits there, doing nothing (in my experience).

Team Lipstick! I love the look of lip gloss, but have yet to find one that doesn’t feel too sticky and doesn’t attract my hair like flypaper attracts flies. And why are so many of them scented? That’s fine for those who like the scents but for those who don’t, it’s hard to find an unscented one. Maybe I haven’t looked enough though, as I am very happy with the gloss and healing power for my often chapped lips that I get from Lansinoh lanolin cream ~ I discovered its many uses when I had the kids, and love dabbing a tiny bit on my lips, including over lipstick. Functions as the best lip balm and lip gloss around in my book!

Team lipstick! I apply at least once a day and carry my standard MAC lip colour in my bag at all times. I have a favourite lemon lip bomb, but I only use it when my lips are *really* dry, and even then in conjunction with my lipstick.

Team lipbalm! My lips are very sensitive and break out from any sunscreen products, so I have to be very careful about what I wear on them. I very rarely wear lipstick, although sometimes I’ll use a stain under the lipbalm.

I am Team Lip Balm, specifically Blistex Medicated (in the teal tube). I will occasionally wear a bit of lipstick (MAC) or lip stain (drugstore variety), but not on a regular basis. When I’m going somewhere fancy, I will do the whole smoky eye thing, with almost-bare lips.

Team Balm. It’s the only thing I wear every day. I can’t stand gloss, but I’m not good at maintaining lipstick. I find it wears off too quickly and I get tired of reapplying it and getting lipstick stains all over my glass of water at work. Nothing keeps my lips feeling good for too long though.

I am team lipstick solely because I can’t stand when my hair gets stuck in the gloss, and it happens every time. I do wear Burt’s Bees balm under all lip colors and to bed at night.

I like the idea of lipstain, but haven’t found a natural looking color.

Since Meg shared her fave lip gloss, which I appreciate since it’s free of a lot of ingredients I try to avoid, I figured I would share my favorite lipstick, which I discovered a few years ago and LOVE. It’s the brand Primitive, and I get it at my local Whole Foods store. They carry the perfect shade for me, and I love how it goes on smoothly and stays on well, even on my often-chapped lips. And all healthy-crunchy ingredients I can pronounce for the most part. Made in the US too, if I remember correctly. Well worth the $15 or so a tube (even better when it’s on sale).

(Blame it on playing flute on a near daily basis until I was 22 – there’s no point in putting on lipstick only to have it smeared all over your chin & head joint in a matter of hours.)

For most of my life I was Team Chapsick or Lip Balm – not even using a gloss, but a preventative to keep my lips from breaking open in the winter. (Another occupational music-related hazard, I think.) I really like Alba lip balm, which has yummy tropical scents and is not sticky. I also picked up a tip from my dermatologist, who keeps a tiny tin of L’Occitane shea butter in her purse to put on her lips, or spot-treat eczema. I’ve even used it to smooth flyaways in my hair if it gets static-y!

Lipstick though most days I am team tinted lipbalm more than anything. I can’t stand lipgloss – not only do I not like the tacky, yucky feeling, I don’t particularly care for the shine. I prefer my lipsticks low shine or matte. My favorite lip balm is the labello ones from Germany – the color & glide is just right! I ran out of my stock and have been purchasing the Nivea ones but they are not as good. The lipsticks in my makeup bag right now are Nars & Lorac. Nars consistently has a great pinkish/brown neutral color every year that works great on me (though the name seems to change!). I’m on the hunt to replace my red lipstick that I seem to have lost.

Angie-I use this, Isabelle Rivière Peony Liquid Shine Lip Color by L’Occitane. I find I get the color of a lipstick but the shine of a gloss, and none of that grabs your hair when the wind blows sticky-ness. Any product for the lips in a squeezable tube, I agree are way too sticky. I look for lip products with little wands to apply.

I’m addicted to lipbalm. I’ve been wearing Carmex for the last few years, various brands before that. I only just recently started wearing lipcolor on a regular basis, and I do like it, but I’m not sure if it’s something that will become part of my long-term style, or if it’s just a fad. Also, I always put Carmex underneath or on top of the lipstick.

Lipstick! I can’t bear the sticky feeling of lipgloss and the rare times I’ve worn it, the wind invariably picks up and blows my hair into my face, gluing stands of hair to my mouth. Not to mention, lipgloss just doesn’t last long enough.

Still, the first layer is always lipbalm…the one item I would have to have on my deserted island list:)

Lena, I have exactly the same experience!

Ladies, you aren’t using the right lipstick if you find that it dries out your lips. Lip stains tend to do that but not lipstick. I am still a Mac user and believe that their lipstick is very moisturizing.

I own a lip gloss I was given about 4 years ago. It’s used so rarely that it hasn’t ran out yet! I don’t mind the shine, but I don’t like the way it makes my lip feels either. I normally prefer the look of matte lips anyway.

I think I’m the first member of Team Bare Lips. I don’t like lipstick or lip gloss (I guess I like lip gloss more because it looks more natural on the lip), and I don’t use lip balm–I think it is addictive. There might be one or two times in the winter where my lips are really dry, and then I will break down and use balm, but I try to avoid it as much as possible because I think it dries my lips out even more. So my lips are always natural.

I don’t like lipstick.

I use Blistex Silk & Shine lip balm on a daily basis.

However, put me on team lip gloss. When I want a little color, I do use gloss, but I don’t like the ones that are super shiny and/or sticky. I like Neutrogena MoistureShine gloss. Nice subtle shades and no stickiness.

Oh I use all three products.

I apply lip balm morning and night. Then I add my lipstick, (a purchase I made for my holiday) but the colour is not quite right so I then add a light gold gloss which mutes the shade perfectly.

I still have to side with team lipstick, it makes me feel polished.

I used to be team lipstick, but modern lip gloss has won me over to the glossy side. The newest formulations are NOT sticky or gooey; they are very flattering and last for hours.

NOTE: Clinique Almost Lipstick in black honey has a permanent place in my makeup bag.

Team lip stick! It has to be over a layer of lip balm – preferably with a sun screen. I have been wearing the same Chanel shade for the last 3 years or more and I wear it day and night. Blotted and 1 layer during the day so it’s more of a stain. I feel a little washed out without it.

I agree with you completely about the stickiness of lip gloss being totally unpleasant, plus it just wears off too fast, and I find lipstick to be generally too heavy and troublesome for daily use… I do wear lipstick for special occasions but that’s about it.

For the most part, I’m Team Bare Lips too. I just tend to focus my makeup on my eyes and my lips are sadly forgotten. I have a stash of lipsticks for dressing up times…and maybe one tube of gloss (I hate that my hair is pretty much guaranteed to stick to my lips with gloss, so I rarely use it) but I always have a MAC Tendertones lip balm in purse for times when I do remember my neglected lips and need some moisture. I have found it to be non sticky, but definitely makes my lips feel healthier and the slight tint helps too…

When I can be bothered, Team Gloss, hands down. I own at least 20 glosses but the one I come back to time and time again is Laura Mercier’s beige gloss. I don’t perceive it to be sticky/tacky but I think I have a higher tolerance for that than others (cough, Angie, cough). It’s great with lipliner, over any color of lipstick, or on its own for just a hint of shine and that nude look that I tend to go for.
Again, that’s when I can be bothered which is generally limited to some sort of public outing (beyond just going to the office).
Otherwise, I am a lip balm addict. I’m writing this very post while staring at my pot of Smith’s Rosebud Salve that sits on my monitor stand and every purse I own, as well as my nightstand, is stocked with various balms. Kiehl’s is another favorite. I CANNOT go to bed without applying Kiehl’s on my lips after I brush my teeth.
I’m not opposed to lipsticks (and was happy to recently purchase a true red color that I’ve worn a few times), but they just aren’t part of my regular regimen, though I own plenty.
For truly special occasions, like weddings or fancy events, I’ll go whole hog: lip liner, lipstick AND gloss on top. And I must admit that I prefer pictures of myself when I’ve taken the time to add a bit of color to my lips.

Team gloss. My lips are on the thinner side and a gloss or a balm definitely makes them appear a little plumper. Darker lipstick shades tend to emphasize their thinness and lighter shades and neutrals just tend to make me look washed out (my skin is pretty fair).

Balm, definitely. For years I’ve always carried strawberry Chapstick with me. I dislike the really tacky feel of gloss or the dry feeling of some lipsticks, so the colored lipsticks/balms etc. I do wear have the feeling of balms.

Lipstick for me. It’s the first cosmetic I was allowed to wear, and it’s still my first love. Nothing brightens up my face quite like lipstick. I’ve refused to have my picture taken until I’ve reapplied my lipstick.

I own a lot of lipgloss, but I usually apply it over lipstick to get the color I like.

My absolute favorite is L’oreal Color Juice Stick – it is VERY sheer – but gives a nice shine – my shade was discontinued but I found a source and stocked up. I tend to stay away from lipstick because it always seems cakey to me – that said I don’t like to feel like my lips are about to drip either. Worse case – I use a lip liner to fill in my lips and lip balm to smooth and blend.

Team gloss, since I have not found yet a color that works against my skin, my teeth and the thickness of my lips. Anything, even light pinks, look like too much on my face -or they look like to much to me, anyways. I mostly use lip balm though, and many times I forget.

I was on Team Lipstick…….but in this past year in an effort to update my makeup look I’ve been batting more for Team Gloss.

But I’m a Lipstick girl at heart…..so I’m siding with them. *wink*

Another Team Balm here. At least twice a day, every day, and I rarely wear lipstick and hardly ever lip gloss.

I like and wear both, but if I had to choose that it would be gloss. I have been wearing gloss layered over lip stain for the past year or so.

I don’t think I ever got around to commenting here. Team Lipstick now, although not long ago I’d be on neither team because I wore nothing. My lips crack and peel with lipstick…any lipstick. I’ve finally figured out that I can wear it with a layer of Aquaphor underneath. I used to play up my eyes rather than my lips, but now feel I need the lip color more.
Lip gloss looks too shiny and strange on older women, especialy if it’s a wet look or brightly colored.
