YLF Picture Perfect Challenge - Day 2

This is Day 2, and our inspiration is

When Will you Marry? by Paul Gauguin dated 1893.

Gauguin went to Tahiti with the aim of painting "primitive cultures," but Tahiti had already been colonized, and the Western influence on the native population was evident. In this picture, it can be seen in the Western style dress of the women at the back. The woman in the front, on the other hand, is dressed a traditional garb, and apparently is of mariage age and looking for a husband as signalled by the flower behind her ear.

I participated back then so I'll do it happily again- but I missed the announcement somehow and so I had to cheat on first day(yesterday).

Today is real. I went for using the colors but really struggled with, there are so many torrid colors each on other. It's spring-so I wouldn't use these colors now- and I dress for an office!

First I wanted to include my olive plaid cigarette pants for the greens but then it occured me the pictie is showcasing feminity in it's all glory-(primitive or colonised) so decided showing some leg is more feminine and I changed for a green pleather skirt. Another challenge for me wearing again now as on the shorter side and with all these midi trends I didn't wear it for ages:-).

Then it all came together quickly including the white V neck vest top underneath and a flower on my neck (as am married already!:-)).

It's really fun to be aware of the story behind my outfit and puts a smile on my face all day, thanks Bella.

ETA: and my bluish nails will do for the blues in the art, isn't it?

Loving this challenge! Thanks so much Bella, for organizing it!

The bright skirt of the woman in traditional garb really appealed to me - and provided the inspiration to style a red check shirt I’ve been wanting to wear, but was struggling to style (#1 photo montage). I came up with a second outfit channeling the demure outfit of the second lady (#2). My older specs are the perfect blue-ish lilac. Though I really like the second outfit, and will use it at a later date, I went with the brighter first outfit for today - a rainy day that needs a little brightness.

Great outfits! It is amazing to see what a wide spectrum of outfits these paintings inspire. Colors, shapes, mood, feeling! I love it.
For my turn, as soon as I typed the little paragraph about the painting, two elements stood out to me. The flower, and the collar of the dress that woman in pink is wearing. So this is what I ended up with. I've never worn this blouse in this way before as an underlayer, so I call this a win.

PS: Excuse the weird angle of the pictues. Haven't taken wiws in a while, and I didn't have a photographer.

Bella thanks for organising. I wore my yellow brocade dress that has flowers on it. I normally wear red shoes and bag with this, but felt that there was quite a sombre mood to this painting despite the bright colours so went with a more conservative shoe and bag. My dress is very covered up, which is what seems evident from the lady in the portrait in western clothes and the people in the background. I read that Tahiti had a population of 80,000 prior to French colonisation which fell to 4,000 after disease introduced by foreigners, including small pox killed the locals. So whilst an idyllic paradise the foreigners did much to damage the health and culture of the indigenous people.

Wow, it's so much fun to see these. Bijou, you are the queen of this challenge! So elegant and feminine yet in key to the images every day! And Lyn, so great you've joined in! Nice to see your outfits again. Love that red bag.

But equally, I love the outfits of those of us who are trying to dress for our more casual days. I have no idea what I'm wearing yet (it's just 7 am here and I'm working from home so still in PJs). But the mind is working...

These interpretations are all so great.

Today I looked for hot and cold colors that felt tropical to me, with hair up to match the painting. In lieu of a flower, I tried to add bits of light with shoes and jewelry. It feels prim and covered yet bold and feminine to me. The jeans make it something I can actually wear all day today in my casual lifestyle.

Christel, great colours!!

I tried to come as close to the colours as I could in my wardrobe and also make the outfit wearable for my work-from-home day.

OK, here is my native, California native, interpretation. The colors of the art piece are not in my closet so California it is. I wore my flowers on my jeans and a black scrunchie in my hair. It is hard to see because of my lousy photography. And California native would not be complete without a white sweatshirt.

I couldn't process (or replicate from my wardrobe) all the colours in the painting so I just focussed on what the two women are wearing.

Red pants and white shirt for the lady in the front. I have a scarf in a warm pink like the second lady's dress. I would never have thought to pair these colours, but I liked the effect and felt energized in a meeting with colleagues in black, grey and blue.

To offset the tailoring of the outfit, this was the best scarf-tie I could come up with to bring some relaxed casualness. For a snowy day (I usually reserve these pants for bone-dry weather), I tucked them into my floppy black snow boots. And black shoes at work (disregard the slippers in the picture).

Here's mine for today, featuring my one and only yellow item. Yellow is the first thing I see when I look at this photo, so I knew I had to use this handknit yellow sweater. It has a leaf motif which also echoes the leaves in the painting. I paired it with a floral cardigan, which brings in the green and red and coral tones from the painting, plus my floral watch. Plus blue crop flares and brownish oxfords to bring in some of the other colors from the painting.

Everyone is doing such an excellent job with outfits inspired by this painting. I had to wear black bottoms and a plain white top and no accessories for an initiation at my first meeting this morning, so will probably save this picture for another day. If the weather were warmer it would help.

Inspired by the warm, earthy colours and billowy shapes, particularly the woman in the foreground. This thrift store sweater is more fun IRL than I can capture in a photo: vintage Land's End, chunky cotton knit with a welted hem and big dolman sleeves. I'm very fond of it. I don't normally wear red and toffee together as it feels too bright and warm, but it's a bright, warm painting! I chose the olive sneakers to ground the outfit and echo the grass in the painting.

@Angie - Danier Leather Emery cross body. Comes with a guitar strap, too. I picked it up July 2019. Don’t see it on their site, so probably sold out.

I missed Bella’s first posts on the challenge and consequently, the first day. Then I had to switch some things around so late to post for Gauguin. When I saw the painting, I immediately thought of my new sweater. The rounded shapes and the colors are great to represent this painting imo. What to pair it with, was another thing. I wanted to reference the earth tones and the intimate atmosphere of femininity. So I paired my sweater with this cinnamon midi skirt. Since the earth tones don’t match, I’m not sure of the end result. But for a day working from home I sure am comfy. And I liked flexing my creative muscles, which was the entire point, at the end of a long and dreary winter (mostly wet over here).

I am actually wearing this Day 2 inspired outfit today on Day 3. The jeans are actually a watermelon red and probably having g their last wear on me as they will be donated after they are washed. They do not stay up well without a belt.
This outfit was mostly inspired by the first ( front) girl I. The painting and I went with colors she is wearing rather than the background. My brownish top because of the color of her skin. The white vest because of the color and shape of her top, red pants for her red skirt. White pearls inspired by her white flower. Brown booties again thinking of skin tones. My pinkish scarf is a nod to the other girls’ dress. Underneath it all I am wearing golden yellows. My bags are rust and brown.

La Pedestrienne, you are tempting me to wear the watermelon jeans once more with my mustard sweater, the reverse of your outfit. Maybe for the colder temps and rain and snow tomorrow. I would never have thought to wear them together.
