Maya's pipe dream of jet setting around the world to meet YLF members got me thinking, especially when Julie mentioned that one meeting point would probably be a better idea.

So, if you can wrap your heads around being practical and realistic about this idea, which international city would serve as the best location for this event?

I have a city in mind, but over to you first.

I'm going to cast a vote for New York City. It's a mamoth international hub whose airport can be accessed directly from just about anywhere, there's no end of things for us all to do upon arrival, and it's got the requisite style quotient.
I should add, though, that my selfish preference would be to go somewhere in Europe.

Although, in seriousness, I do feel that somewhere on the US east coast is most central to everyone. It's roughly equidistant from the west coast as it is to western Europe. So NY makes sense in terms of practicality, and we'd certainly have no shortage of great shopping (because that is all we would do, right? :P).

Seattle also seems practical since so many people live there already and as I mentioned, it is YLF headquarters.

A great big fancy YLF high tea in London would be so divine though! You know what. i don't really care! I am a travel nut in theory, if not in practice, so I'll take any opportunity to go somewhere else.

Hm, that's a hard one. New York works for the Europeans, but it's pretty far for the Aussies + Kiwis, in which case the western US would be better. YLF headquarters Seattle would be cool.

As far as I can tell, though, San Francisco is about the same distance from Sydney as it is from London, flight-time wise. And of course I am biased, since I live in the Bay Area!

Las Vegas might be another option; there are usually lots of cheap flights going there although I don't know if that's the case internationally.

Well, NYC definitely works from a logistical viewpoint, but my dream location for this event would be Paris. Just think how annoying the locals would find us! Hilarious.

NYC is fabulous, probably my favorite city in the world, but it's SO expensive.

I'm voting for San Francisco for the following reasons:

1) Great shopping
2) Good weather (usually!)
3) Angie's best friend lives not too far
4) And my family is not too far as well.

Or Chicago works for me too.

Honestly, I'd love to attend a worldwide YLF convention *anywhere*, but I'd have to be gainfully employed before I could attend any exotic and/or far-away location.

For entirely practical travel reasons it would have to be either New York or LA for all the reasons mentioned above. For anyone from Australia or New Zealand LA would be the easiest as there are direct flights.

But I'm torn between Ele's suggestion of Paris and Julie's suggestion of Hong Kong, I would also like to through Barcelona (those oh so stylish Spanish) or Milan into the mix...

Very interesting. I'm not actually teasing, Ele. If we don't think about these things they will never happen!

So, it would have to be an English speaking city, which rules out a lot of Europe. London and NYC are too exspensive in my opinion even though London would probably be my first choice. SF sprung to mind actually. So did Hong Kong, Boston, Singapore, Chicago and Seattle. Fairly affordable and outstanding shopping and food options.

We wouldn't be able to satisfy everyone unfortunately. But we should keep on trying. I don't give up that easily :0)

Isn't SF pretty expensive as well? I know the rent is expensive, but maybe that doesn't mean everything else is. I was there last 10 years ago though, so what do I know.

I'm factoring weather into this. No way am I going to HK or Singapore in summer, nor am I freezing my tail of in Boston or Chicago in winter...I have to do that as it is, and it's no fun! Seattle's too rainy. Boston in summer or HK/Singapore in winter is fine though.

I don't know that wherever we go HAS to be English speaking, and I think most Europeans know a decent amount of English anyway, if not totally fluent.

In any case, I won't be able to attend so my opinion can be discounted. :p

Surprisingly, SF has some bargains as far as accommodations go, especially in its smaller neighborhood hotels. That would be a nice option, actually, although of course I would love to show off Chicago to everyone ... best city in the world, in the summertime (large caveat there!).

Maya, Seattle is less grey and rainy than London. Also, we'd select the best time of the year to visit the city. San Francisco has awful summers so we won't be going there in summertime!

I have a friend who is a travel agent who could get the UK contingent a good deal on airfares.

I've loved SF both times I have been there and will be there briefly for a 3rd in October this year.

When is the dry season in HK Angie? Am I right in thinking that now is the rainy/monsoon season?

You see! Fiona is on the ball already. Summer is typhoon season in Hong kong. Ideally you want to go off season in January when it's dry, cool and very, very bargain friendly.

Wow, that would be exciting! Of course, the east coast works the best for me! I've had a hard enough time convincing my husband that I need to go to NYC to meet people I only know virtually. I can't imagine trying to fly somewhere for a meet-up!

Boston is actually more expensive to fly to/from than NYC. Chicago seems very central in terms of flying from both coasts of the US as well as Europe/Australia. Seattle seems super practical since so many board members live there!

Chicago you can do in one hop from the UK, but would require more than one flight from Australia/NZ and it would mean immigration in LA which is the worst experience in the entire world.

I love Boston! My husband would approve if it was during baseball season or football season...flights from the UK to Boston are not too much more expensive than to NY.

Would anyone require a visa for entry into the USA? I know that NZ and Australia and the UK are part of the visa wavier scheme.

NYC and LA are too pricey for me on the hotel front. Also, NYC is fabulous but very difficult to navigate in a group - crowds everywhere, etc. Somewhere like Chicago in May or Houston in April would be fabulous.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm all for Boston - it's just been my observation from my yearly trips to Germany that flights from Boston are generally about $100-200 more expensive than from NYC. I guess that's not a big deal for an individual but for a family of four, that really adds up!
