Eliza, Pil...most big venues which cap their races at 500 participants have age groups in 5 year increments, starting at 19 and under (you usually have to be 18 to compete, though there are special competitions for juniors and 'under 21'). I've seen men in their 70's at it, and occaisionally there is a woman in her 60's. Our venue is small with 150-200 participants, and the age groups go by 10 year increments, starting with 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49' and 50-99!
I've been a runner in one form or other since jr high school. I got into short course triathlon 10 years ago when I found I just wasn't recovering from training (marathons, half marathons) like I did when I was younger. Why be good at one sport when you can be average at three!
I trained year round, but only did our local event. When my son got serious about the sport 3 years ago, I decided if I was going to drive him all over the province to compete, I would participate in races too! I aim for one a month, or 4 over the summer.
Pil, those are my back up specs. I hand off my specs just before the swim, and have a pair sitting in my helmet at the transition spot. I can't do contacts, alas.
