[Outfit 1.] No recollection where I went in this, but given how exciting my life is at the moment it could have been something exotic like food shopping or school run. Either way, I tried typical Vix pose to snap it and as added bonus my neighbour had complimented my outfit when she saw me that day

[Outfit 2.] I have struggled to fall back in love with my bootcuts -- I mean, in love, so I can actually enjoy and not just tolerate wearing them.

Then Amy threw a lifebelt with her the recent post featuring floral blazer. Don't you just love when a fabber posts something you can't wait to try yourself??

Bootcuts - check; purple top - check, floral blazer - no check, but check my shot at it with the grey blazer and abstract print scarf (in this incarnation we pretend it's flowers on them, ok ladies?). Worn to the amazing day out with our son's friend from school and his family to the Museum for Communication, where I even attempted to write with feather and ink.

[Outfit 3.] We have kids birthday parties by bucketloads, so this time it was our little neighbour's turn and her b.r.a.v.e parents actually had a party at home. *insert a smiley with a horror face when I found out* It was so crowded, but great and I have met a lot of interesting new people - always a bonus.

Instead of going OTT with bling (little girl's birthday is perfect excuse for that in my book), I decided to go for comfort instead. I'm working my way through the endless combinations of tops, belts and scarves I can use to transition this dress to colder days, and this time it was turn to have a go with teal.

Joyful extra: YLF -- with feather and ink.

As usual, comments, suggestions and observations are most welcome.

Love the Vix pose in #1! You look very chic. I like the country vibe from #2 and 3 is perfect for a kiddies party.
Btw I'm still scarred from a small party I held for DS's birthday 3 years ago. He had only 3 friends round but one of them turned out to be very naughty, thinking that it was fine to jump on my furniture and push one of the others downstairs!. DH was supposed to get home early to help and was held up at work, by the time he got home, I was a nervous wreck and promptly went upstairs, poured a large whiskey and left him to it!

Oh Diane, poor thing, I can totally imagine that - this is why I called a celebration at home a brave idea! OK, there were all parents there as well, it was actually very friendly and nice, but still... the logistics of it, the crowd, kids of various ages... no, thank you

No surprise that you got compliments in the "Vix pose" outfit. You look just as elegant and glamorous as she always does. And...um...for a school run? I think Mr. O. needs to take you out for a date night in that outfit. Love it with the coat and gloves as well.

You wear bootcuts brilliantly! With those legs that go on forever (she said, enviously...)

And #3 is going to be a workhorse dress for you.

As for children's birthday parties...I think Diane's story of the boy pushing another child down the stairs tops anything that went on in our house. But the time one of my daughter's guests came into the kitchen and started rooting through the cupboards in search of chocolate still stands in my memory as an interesting moment.

Can't resist adding my birthday horror story--I thought I had kid parties down with my 2 daughters and their little girl friends. Then DS turned 8 and had his 8 boy school friends over--it rained, hard, so I thought they'd stay indoors and forget about he outdoor games I had planned. No, half them ran out and back in through the rain, the other half took the games equipment (golf clubs!) and used them on the furniture...

You really rock bootcuts! I love #2, preppy but with a very warm and arty edge (the scarf). Like your choice of colour palette as well, this set of outfits could be easily expanded into a capsule, I bet.
We had my youngest's 6th birthday party this past weekend, about 1 dozen school friends. Thank heaven I hired some entertainers, they were amazing: so many balloon animals! My DD had a great time. Still eating cake though...

My favourite is the birthday party outfit--a little dotty for whimsy but with grown-up colours for peer parents!

Curiosity prompts the question: Where are birthday parties typically held these days? I have only ever had one celebrated outside the home as a minor, because Ma was ill. The urban Indian trend now is to use the nearest mall or McDonald's.

Parties here in SA seem to be all about the activities - maybe that is just the age my kids are at... we have had ski-decks for bum-boarding, go karting, climbing walls, adventure parks, drumming and indoor soccer already this year. My kids who are both winter babies have requested an ice skating party next year. I have thrown parties for them at home, but I find it far less stressful and sometimes a bit cheaper to have them at a venue.

Yes, the bootcuts have definitely earned themselves the place in regular rotation (thanks again Amy), and everything else will be making regular appearances in the coming months too.

Mandipa :: I think the style and way of celebrating comes down to many factors: age of the children (the little ones might be entertained much easier), preferences (I can imagine girls sitting doing some crafts, but not boys), whether you have parents staying with the kids or not (to look after them - this, I find, is also a cultural thing), the budget of course...

As a rule, I personally would refrain from home parties unless for smaller circle of closes friends, because of the logistics of entertaining alone, let alone the possible havoc it can leave behind - read a few stories above. Plus, I've heard some friends saying that their guests stayed forever, which stops being fun after several hours when all entertainment options are exhausted and kids especially get too tired. My formula has so far been to do it outside home, we'll see what the future brings.

Well I'm glad Amy inspired you to dust off those bootcuts because they look gorgeous on you! As I said in another response, I swear you keep getting leggier and leggier. Maybe get measured the next time you're at the doctor?

As a sucker for a simple silhouette with one bold accessory, I also love #1. To really capture my typical pose, though, you may need to look a lot more tense and "did that $#$%$ timer go off yet?"

All of these are great! The scarf in #1 looks fabulous with the dress. I love the bootcuts with the blazer and scarf, I'm going to try that as soon as I can fit into my bootcuts again (I have so many outfit ideas saved up over the last few months). Also like the dotted scarf and skirt in #3.

I always have my boys' parties in another venue too. My boys' birthdays are only 6 days apart so I have one combined party, which means a lot of little boys that can get very hyper when together. I find it's best to do something that keeps them moving and active so they get into less trouble.

Ornella, you look so fantastic! Your Vix pose is perfect. Everything fits well and you look comfortable yet totally pulled together and cheerful, just as you are.

My bootcuts are also mostly tolerated, but they are so useful for certain days and with certain boots that I have put together a couple of FFBOs with tops that work, and those are the only ways I wear them.

Also - love #3 - the teal polka dots are perfect for a kid's birthday party. I too, am struggling with my bootcuts - I honestly haven't worn them for 2 years - but, you have inspired me to get them out and give them a shot!

Ah, I've written a detailed comment in the evening, but was blown away by a storm so far:-((( but still couldn't let your post without a comment, Ornella!
Loved all your outfits here, the Vix pose:-), the coat, the scarves,the pocketed dress and the using of colored tights which never look quite right on me, but I really have to learn doing subtle and chic, like you do!

Ref. children parties... just wait to have teenagers around, and you'll see:-))

We were those brave parents which kept all our DD's (16) birthday parties at home, outdoors and/or indoors from her turning 3 years old up to date! Our house was always crowded inside and outside exactly as experienced at your neighbours-but we had so much fun during the years.
It's a tradition by us to do myself her birthday cakes-so the topsy turvies, the mushrooms or later a "30 seconds to Mars" themed cake was always a big surprise and success between my DD's peers.
I remember one year I even made a salty cake (from bread, ham, creamcheese etc) and a sweet pizza (sweet dough, pudding patches as mozzarella, and strawberry jam as ketchup) to change things up a bit and trick them, so it was all screaming, goofing and laughters.
Now, as they are teenagers is more about some "lecker" house made tortilla wraps, hot dogs, or chinese snacks and they crowd up in her separate room only-to see a film or listen to some music-and our hall is full of big sized trendy booties or converses:-), but they don't want to miss a special cake, either! I'm thinking a London theme this year as they will have a trip there in spring, with the school:-)
