WIW: Pandemic and Evacuation Watch

Feeling pretty fortunate that we haven't had to evacuate from the Bay Area Fires. We were on the watch list but were downgraded last night as the fire moves SE and containment is improving. After gathering all of the irreplaceable paperwork, briefly considered what else I would take and you know what crossed my mind? Note, I'm not very sentimental so I didn't have a bunch of stuff I wanted to save but I did think about all of the things that I really like but don't wear often or haven't worn at all. We're still not out of the woods but it's food for thought and I shall keep this in mind when I get dressed. Thanks for reading!

HOW STRESSFUL. This, on top of a pandemic, and still, you look soooo KILLER stylish, and are posting on YLF in a calm and kind way. Kelly, you have even more of my admiration and respect. WOW!! Glad you've moved out of the evacuation zone. May it stay that way!!!

I'm a very sentimental person, but in your situation, I'd grab Greg, Sam, my pearls, the Valentino YLF gave me, and call it good.

Interesting that you thought about what clothes you’d miss. I’m glad you mentioned that as I always thought I’d take basics but I have a few things I’d really miss that aren’t replaceable.
I love your style. Casual and stylish and intentional. My favorite is #1 as I love a black on black pattern.

Thanks, Angie! Hoping that conditions improve for the fire fighters. The temps have cooled but the terrain is difficult and then there are the unpredictable winds. They really have their work cut out for them--the size of the fire is almost incomprehensible.

I packed a few pieces of jewelry (even though I never wear it) and thought about taking my leather jacket but that's about it. Poor Oreo has been out of sorts--she must have sensed the stress and smelled the fire. She's been the velcro dog lately. She's still my best accessory.

Thanks, Barbara! I guess it is a wake up call for enjoying your closet now. I tend to "save" things for the right occasion. Sometimes, that occasion never arrives so may as well enjoy it while I can.

Years ago we were threatened by wildfire. There were necessities (ID, insurance papers, clean clothes) and irreplaceables (photos, and handmade things such as the blanket chest made by my grandfather). Once you determine what should be in those groups, you don’t care about the rest. One thing we all should do is video our things - walk through the house and document what we have, for insurance purposes. Probably should do that annually.

Kelly so glad you are out of the danger zone. As if we needed one more disaster in 2020. My company is based in Palo Alto, and the local folks have been pretty stressed.

My instinctive reaction is that I can't even imagine what I would do and take with me in this situation. But, it is a very good idea to imagine it. Because, 2020.

You look great in all, but i extra love #1 and you are va-voom in #6!

I’m very sentimental. I don’t live in CA, but we also occasionally have wildland fire. For years I’ve had a list of sentimental items to evacuate, and while there are no clothes on the list, I certainly understand the desire to wear all my clothes. It’s weird to look at all the work and professional clothing in my closet that I’m not wearing during WFH.

And it's so great to see blue sky again in my area. We got the word today that we can go outside and get some moderate exercise. Went out and found our patio furniture and surfaces coated with fine black ash. I'll be cleaning up for a while. Our cats are distressed as well. They've insisted we open a window, they sniff the air, and then leave. They know. And they are indoor cats.

Unfortunately, in all our years together we've accumulated a lot of stuff. And when the heat wave started I stayed in and kept shopping NAS, so during the last smoky week the items have been arriving in different batches. Didn't foresee I might leave them behind.

So glad the fire is moving away from your area, Kelly. We haven't been in the evacuation warning area so far, but many of our neighbors have been having a lot of anxiety over the possibility.

You look cool and calm. You must be a rock for your family. Interesting observations about clothing. I might add that you should wear those things you like now while you can. There are other reasons than fires, hurricanes and floods. You may lose or gain a bunch of weight or for medical reasons can no longer wear your favorites. Styles can change so that you no longer feel attractive or confident in an old favorite. And wish you had bought a new outfit for that special occasion. Wear It Now.

So sorry you are going through this. I can’t imagine. It seems whenever I think things can’t get worse in 2020, something else comes up (hello, Hurricane Laura).

I think I’d grab my jewelry box, not because I have a lot of valuables but because some of the items are very sentimental and irreplaceable.

How stressful for you - awful on so many fronts but pleased that the worst has eased.

You do look wonderful in black and in the terracotta rust - I wonder if you are a Dark Autumn (I don't take colours too seriously though).

Growing up, there used to be lots of earthquakes and my dad prepared a rucksack for each family member! Mr Minu was shocked when I prepared one for us - I think it's nice to have it ready in the event of an emergency.

In our emergency bagpack, I have copies of our passports and wedding doc, 1 picture of us, medicines, 1 change of clothes, tinned food for us and the cat, keys, empty thermos, first aid kit, toothbrush and tooth paste, some cream samples and phone recharger. Incidentally, it's close to the cat carrier!

I hope the fire get under control, bushfires are definitely the thing I hate most about summer. You look wonderful and your hair looks great, have you had a haircut? Poor Oreo, dogs really do pick up on the stress of situations.

Interesting observation about wearing the clothes you love rather than saving them because if this year has taught us anything it’s that you never know whats around the corner.

Fire is awful! I hope your home remains outside the evacuation zone. It was tragic when my neighbors house burned to the ground a few years ago, and it was only one house, not an entire community. The firemen retrieved some of her jewelry, her wallet, laptop and cellphone. They could not find her pets (cat, dog), who had hidden themselves in their fear. Even though Oreo senses something is amiss and seems stressed, hopefully, Oreo’s clinginess means she will be right nearby if you need to grab her and go quickly, My neighbor has repeatedly said that the only regrets she has is losing her non-digitized photographs and her pets.

OMG, what a (night-&day)-mare! Trully sorry for the stress you are living through in top of all other actual worldwide stressing conditions...and really I cannot even imagine this- but yes- family members safe including pets are primordial! Really hope you Won't be forced to leave your home in the end--- please you all stay safe and healthly!
