WIW 01.30.2014 How not to Wear Cobalt

I love cobalt blue, and I love the way it pairs with crisp white. But today was not a day for white trousers. So, I opted for grey instead of black hoping it would be less harsh. I then added a gold scarf, shoes and watch in an attempt to accessorize the outfit into greatness. Not so sure about it.

(Sweater and pants from Talbots, Boutique 9 gold snake shoes, Target gold scarf, Movodo watch)

How do you wear cobalt blue other than with white?

I like it! Cobalt looks great with gold… and you look lovely and very seasonally appropriate in this outfit. Sure, that cobalt top would look stunning with white trousers… but you can save that for a slush-free day. BTW -- I often pair cobalt with darks like black and gray this time of year.

Thistle, I know that some will say they wear it with bright colours and burgundy! Beth Ann and Sveta were doing some experiments in that line earlier in the autumn and didn't Angie do an example outfit with that combo?

But I think you need just the *right* cobalt and burgundy for that -- I found it difficult to do in my own closet -- which is one reason that I tend to wear cobalt much more in spring/ summer -- when it's possible for me to add white to the mix.

I actually think it works with the grey here just fine. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the scarf, but sort of for the reasons you mentioned in my thread the other day -- just my own minimalism speaking. Oh...and the fringe. Angie suggested I snip the fringe on my scarves and it was a very clever idea. I wonder if it might also feel good to you? I think for those with boho leanings the fringe is really fun, but if our tendencies are more toward modern classic, a fringe can feel like too much.

I do have exactly 1 pencil in cobalt in my wardrobe, and never reached to it for a matter of not feeling quite right the intense cobalt for me, but will challenge me to try it soon. Then I would pair it with all blacks (and) a brown//black/little cobalt plaid wool jacket for winter. Greys would be great, too-but I must admit l have never thought of pairing grey, cobalt AND gold together, but it looks good!

Another tip will be a black and white patterned bottom?(I think of one with white background, and less blacks) as Beth Ann has.

Love the color on you! One of my favorite colors ever -- I wear it with black, all shades of grey, denim blue, etc. I also like it with touches of burgundy.

I don't think this is bad, Thistle. Maybe it's not great to you because you were imaging the sharp contrast of the white and cobalt and the grey and cobalt is quite different? If it were me and I couldn't wear white due to the weather conditions, I would try black on the bottom. Then I would add a black topper of some kind, or a scarf with some black in it.

For starters, those flats are amazing! They look great with your hair. I feel like cobalt is a really regal colour combination, but I'm not sure about the grey pants. I like cobalt and black, personally. Or maybe a dark red?

I do think you'd make a stronger impact if the scarf matched your shoes or pants (somehow the shoes and scarf don't come across as the same color), but it's just fine as it is. You are so hard on yourself!

I think this is a perfectly nice outfit. But maybe a scarf with grey in it, and let the shoes shine on their own.

to my eye if that scarf were more "gold" it would bookend better. since you have those fab gold shoes looking for a scarf in that color would not be remiss!

I wear a lot of cobalt, but in flipping through my stylebook app, I must admit, its pretty much exclusively with white in the summer, and black in the winter (much like Shannon's outfit today). To my eye, the saturation of the cobalt needs the pure colours, and doesn't "jive" with grey as well.

I wear cobalt with grey and black as well as white. I like the outfit you've put together here with the gold scarf and gold shoes. I also sometimes wear cobalt with brown or tan.

Do you have a scarf that picks up the different colors and ties it all together? That would create a bit more of cohesion.

I have cobalt jeans and prefer them with white, black and burgundy best. I like a high contrast look with them.

I think the cold is getting to you and you're being extra hard on yourself. I think the cobalt is a great color for you. Maybe not work appropriate but it could work with denim (mid wash).

I had the same thought as Sona, but I suspect that the scarf is one of those that looks more gold in person than it does in the photos. My instinct would be to either wear the sweater with gray, or with gold, not both. If you wanted to wear the shoes and or scarf, I would be tempted to wear it with ink blue or dark navy trousers, or black maybe (might be a little too 80s grandma, would have to try it out). With the mid gray trousers I'd want to wear charcoal shoes or cognac or even burgundy or oxblood, and silver accessories.

Thistle, I thin the scarf is throwing the outfit off. I wear a lot of cobalt with just about everything in my closet.

I think it looks nice and I also think that Suz makes a good point that it may not feel simple enough for you. Do you ever tie the ends of your scarves together to create an infinity scarf? For some reason that feels less fussy to me and I've saved some looks that way.l

since black, white and burgundy has already been mentioned, perhaps certain browns, purples, bronze, or olive? Don't have much cobalt; I'm a weenie that shies away from bright primary-ish colors so I'm the wrong person to answer this...

I love cobalt, I think it is my favourite colour! I wear it a lot with black, and people often comment on it.
I think the cobalt looks great with your grey pants. I tend to prefer cobalt with silver, so maybe it is the scarf that is making you a bit uneasy? But really, I do not think this outfit is a "don't" at all!

Actually I like this as is...cobalt looks great with grey or black to me and I like the scarf. A scarf with some saturated red, cobalt, and gold would be fun with this too.
