WIW- black for summer

Well, I try to get away from black but I always come back to it. It’s just so darn practical as a base for summer outfits- hides sweat and the grit and soot of the urban environment. I like to pair it with warm colors like cream, orange, pink and yellow. And I got lucky on my last trip to Myanmar, and snagged this bag woven of just those colors. (Pic 4)

I have noticed a lot of black in retail for summer this year,maybe they are trying to tell us something!I think black suits your urban style vibe perfectly.l really like that dress on you.l try not to wear black anytime of year but you are right about it’s practicality and availability.

JK -- I do wear black in summer, except when it's ungodly hot and humid. Even then, I find that what bothers me more in the sticky heat is the tightness and weight of a garment rather than its color.

I have a loose, breezy, solid black silk shirtdress that I love in summer.

I like black for all temps. There is something great about black in summer and I agree with April, you do look wonderful.

Team black here. I might even like it best in the summer, when there is usually some skin showing (arms, legs, ankles) which mitigates the darkness. Works for me. And you look smashing as usual.

Your accessories make it fun! I avoid black in the summer, but I allow myself one black thing per category (like 1 dress, 1 top, etc) because it sure is darn practical and versatile. But dark colors bum me out once it gets hot. I open my closet and feel like everything's the same, and not in a good way, a la uniform.

These colour combos look terrific on you! (By the way, I love how some of the colours are reflected in your hair.) Great examples of how to wear black in summer!

Though I wear less black now than I did years ago, I don't avoid black. I just pulled out my summer items, and there are several black ones among them. But like you, I mix them with other colours--in my case, pastels, brights, white and silver.

I think black can look cool in summer--if the fabric is relatively light, the styling is summery and some skin is showing.

I'm trying to get away from too much black this summer too, but, as you say, it is a challenge. I like your outfits and the way you've lightened them up. I have a black, sleeveless, jersey maxi-dress that I usually style very similarly to your first outfit--a light-colored statement necklace, yellow cardigan, and cognac flats or sandals.

Love you in black! That tie waist dress is so great. I never wear black except pants. And find it too warm in summer (sun at 6500 feet of elevation is extra intense). Since I burn so badly And hate sunscreen I tend to cover up arms and legs with fabric. Although I guess nomadic desert tribes wear black.

Love the bag especially, and your jackets! I like black more in summer, since I have bare arms and legs to warm up the color. Then the overall effect is dark brown. Its harder in winter since I wear more greens, purples, and teals-and without much skin showing-it feels too cool toned.

I’m a huge fan of black for summer. I actually think black looks best when balanced with some exposed skin.

Interesting to hear all the opinions about balancing heavy black with exposed skin- I hadn’t thought about it that way but of course it’s true that it maintains a breezy feel if there’s not full coverage.

JenniNZ, I am VERY lucky that over the years I’ve gotten to do a ton of travel for my own work (at various jobs) and also a ton of tagging along with hubby’s work trips. So much to see in this fascinating region! I really enjoy the opportunity to live in Asia as opposed to just quick visits—the element of time adds a whole other dimension. Going on 12 years now that we’ve built our lives in Japan, Cambodia and now China. (Still haven’t visited NZ though!)

Excellent, thank you! I have only been to Singapore, Koh Samui in Thailand, and Bali so far. But Vietnam here we come in November. Keen to see Hong Kong and China after that some time. Not enough time off work

True black is rare in my wardrobe and even more so in summer. It highlights my pale skin and is unflattering on me with a blushing, sweaty face :). Though I do have one breezy, slightly transparent black summer dress with a silver thread woven through that is surprisingly easy to wear.

Well, if I was going to, this is how I'd want to look.

I think you're really onto something with the supporting colors, "warm" but also "natural"? More cream and cognac, less chrome yellow and scarlet? Of course all colors exist in nature but your choices are more commonly visible where I live and the effect for me is that it moves the outfit away from the urban black looks of winter.

Love this! I’ve been wearing lots of black lately too. It’s such a great fall back color for me. I don’t have to think about what to pair with it—anything goes.

I’m another who wears black more in summer than winter because exposing skin gives me more contrast. All over black, with no contrast, doesn’t make me happy.

The first outfit - the black dress outfit - is one of my favourites on you - it is just so brilliant with the necklace and the shoes, and all the smashing accessories.
The second one is super too - cool, actually, even though it is not so in to say "cool" any more
