Today's outfit, yesterday's outfit and K/R Gap plaid blazer

First: today's frustrating frumpy outfit. Oh, well. Better without the cardi, but not as warm.

Next: WIW yesterday to run errands with my friend before they move to the Mayo clinic.

Last: Ordered this Gap plaid academy blazer with a discount code and a rewards coupon. I LOVE blackwatch but have had a hard time finding anything that seems like me. What do we think of this on me?

I like the blazer on you, but ... Is that how you're going to style it? I see you funking this up in some way. Not so corporate.

Love the purple color on you in the middle pic. And you didn't look horrible today, but I see what you mean about the outfit not being you. You've spoiled us with so many fab outfits that this one just doesn't meet Una standards!

Oh, I have that blazer, and wear it ALL THE TIME. I wear it over denim shirts, button downs (white, blue/white striped), and blue/white striped t-shirts. I love it. It looks great on you. What makes you hesitate?

I do prefer 1/2 without the cardi. 3 is very cute!

Anne, I just threw it on. I am trying to think how to funk it up. I have had this problem with conservative blazers before (the purple j. crew hacking blazer) but the plaid speaks to me somehow. Any ideas?

Sarah, hesitating on whether it's my style - have I seen it on you? Worried it will be a struggle for me somehow as too conservative, although I LOVE the cut and fabric. Or will it meet the cute preppy schoolboy vibe?

You are too hard on yourself. I think the outfit is awesome sans sweater. You just learned something new! Love the magenta sweater and love the blazer! I wear my plaid Target one all the time too. I like to edge it up with fun footwear. I usually just wear a striped tee under it--preferably one that isn't too matchy!

Wear the blazer with BF tucked into your Gidgiio boots or with skinnies. You have tons of edge and I know you can make it work for you. It's fab on you!

Those were some of my thoughts too - Gidigios get back hone from cobbler Saturday. I can't believe how much I miss them! I think dressing the blazer DOWN is the way to go.

Since the blazer wants to be all prep school, I'd try pairing it with opposite items, like a graphic tee or boyish boots and denim. My wheels are slow turnin' tonight!!

Una it's a great blazer but I just don't think it's your style. I equate your style with edge and to my eye this is not an edgy piece, it reads a little more preppy (I think) to me. My general feeling is that this going to take a reasonable amount of effort to style and it may not be worth the effort.

Love the slouchy outfit with the cardi in #1. Your loose pants are perfect ! and the blouse dresses up the outfit. I wish my thighs looked that good in light colored skinny jeans. Would someone please tell me to stop eating Christmas cookies...holiday M&Ms .... mini cheesecakes ... blueberry bars.

Una, I haven't posted it yet. I'll try to over the weekend. I was thinking, tho, that since you don't wear button downs, it might be a problem. I wear mine with my BF jeans which takes care of the preppiness factor, in my mind, but I do wear it over button downs... hmmm...

I see what you mean about the cardi Una - it's just not your thing that's all. The outfit looks fine though, although definitely better without the cardi so more of the shirt shows. Would look fab with your Theory blazer though.

LOVE that second outfit! Good grief that purple colour is amazing on you. And I'm with Denise - your legs look fantastic in those grey skinnies.

I like the Gap blazer and have actually been thinking of trying it myself. I like it on you...but I hesitate that you may end up orphaning it because it's not exactly your style. My suggestion would be to try a few outfits with UWP influence (the Gidigio boots, the leather skinnies,etc.) and see how it works for you before making a decision.

That snake print blouse thrills me every time I see it on you...I'm so glad you got it! I agree with Deborah and Shannon about the blazer, though. There's just something about it that resists "funking," I think, even though it's got the on-trend boxy shape and you have it paired with those fantastic slouchy pants.

I love the blazer and think it's made for pattern mixing and weekend funk. Can be worn in the week, too, in certain situations. But then I have the preppy boy gene, too, and love Black Watch.

As for outfit 1, thank you for posting it. It is great to know that everyone, even YLF royalty, can have an off day. The outfit is great without the sweater....the problem is the sweater, not the outfit! And not you.

I actually really like the cardigan and think it's preppy rather than frumpy. But it doesn't work with the rest of the outfit. I have a thing against mixing different shades of black and a thing against cardigans over button-down shirts.

Not sure about the blazer. How's the fabric quality? It manages to look both stiff and rumpled in this picture. Would you even consider keeping it if it cost say 300 rather than 60?

Hmm, yeah, I see what you mean about the cardi. A jacket would have been much better. I have definitely had a similar shift in my own closet where I don't ever wear my plain fitted cardigans any more (I do still wear the weirder, handknit, funky ones). Love the purple color of the other outfit on you too!

Re: the plaid academy blazer. I had considered this one for myself too but ultimately decided not to get it because it just felt too "American preppy" to me as opposed to "British preppy". Maybe this is just a distinction in my own head, but to me British preppy would be more riding jacket style with curved hems and maybe leather elbow patches, you know? Like, you know, English country estate not CT estate. =P

Anyway, that was a rather long winded way of saying that I don't think the style/vibe of the jacket is for you. It would be hard to un-prep it IMO. I do love Black Watch plaid though.
