Today's ensemble - my interpretation . Apparently I look like an unwashed hippie :)

Me: "what do you think, is this a little weird?"
Jill (daughter, 21) : big pause, looking me over.
"I'm sorry, I can't help you"
Me: " What - the pants? "
Jill: "Those things look like what hippies with dreads who haven't showered in 8 months wear."
Me: slinks back into my bedroom to swap out the also-hippie coat for something shorter and more structured. Goes back in .
Jill: " I just don't know, mom, wear whatever you want."

So - I wore this outfit out today with a ponte moto jacket instead, which was great, but too hot. She and I went out to do a bit of shopping and , and I was aware of being looked at a few times - which freaked me out a bit. Harem pants are just not a thing here. . It's way out of my usual look zone but I really didn't mind it. What do you all think? I've been itching to wear these harems again, and today's post was the impetus for this look. I've overexposed some of the pics to show the pattern on the coat, and to give the black more contrast against my background. I wore the floatier coat thing for the photos - I really like this combo, but fear I may be missing the mark here. I'm all ears for your thoughts.....

coat - Bryn Walker (black and grey mix)
harems - Eileen Fisher - flat black jersey
tank - black silk with a sheer bottom panel
shoes - black suede Lord & Taylor.
necklace - resin, mix of dark neutrals; no earrings and just a plain black mens watch (Daniel Wellington)

From the subject line, I thought perhaps you'd bought those faux-mud jeans.

Maybe the jacket, when worn with the harems, requires commiting to ALGO, volume-wise. And your daughter's eye might need time to adjust to that? She went out in public with you, so she can't have hated it that much!

This meets Angie's brief for black on black, and you would fit right in with the crowd in TO. It is a little more art school/theatre neighbourhood than banking centre.

Ooof, daughters can be harsh.

But really? I love this outfit. I definitely love the harems and the shoes are driving me crazy with their awesomeness. The jacket is fun, too. Though if I was going to switch out anything, it might be the jacket for a more streamlined or polished piece, but just to cut the boho factor a little. However, there is no way it's a hobo look!!!!

I'm with Carla on the harshness of 20-somethings! ( Perhaps some of the lovely 20-somethings on the forum would disagree, but perhaps also by being on the forum you are more open somehow). I think you look AMAZING in all of this Lisa. My fave is pic 2 all flowing and with the gorgeous shoes which fit the outfit so well style-wise with their ties.
My own younger daughter, 23, wrinkled her nose up with my new extravagant dark navy snakeskin high-shaft boots with the random red patches. I love them so much I just want to stroke them. She eventually admitted she liked the shape but not the leather with snakeskin/patterning. I should learn not to show off new exciting ( to me) acquisitions to the girls. This has happened before. DS 20 is bemused by everything and at times so is DH. As someone said before, that's why we have the forum!

Forgot to say, I love the way you've put this together. To my eye, the loops of the shoe's ties echo the circles of the necklace.

I am not sure what I feel about the harem pants (not a fan myself, but you manage to make them look an interesting part of a sophisticated outfit).

Your coat, necklace and shoes are amazing.

I must come to Jill's defense: she and I have a perfect stand-up humour act that we carry out at every opportunity to my husband's dismay . She is about as harsh as a pillow. I laughed when she came up with the dreadlocked hippie analogy, because that's exactly who we see wearing them at hot yoga

I am loving all of your comments, and please be honest about what you do and don't love here. I am not a huge fan of these pants, but I bought them and would like to figure out one or two ways to wear them without being untrue to myself. This was a full-on experiment.

I think they look pretty sophisticated the way you've styled them. More of an artsy vibe than hippie to my eye.

Um, I love any daughter of yours simply because she is your daughter, but, I am sorry, she needs to bone up a wee bit on the fashion history!

You look amazing. I would say you look Queen Street art bar more than hippie. Love those shoes (looked at them in person today) and love how the daintiness adds structure to the voluminous pants. This reminds me of what really cool people might have worn in the 80s (minus shoulder pads) and it's a great interpretation of today's ensemble!

Yeah, if anything, this reads more "arty goth" than "hippie" to me. Since when do hippies wear black-on-black?!

Haha - Suz. Jill is a jock. Fashion is not top of her list Now I want to go to a Queen St art bar Oh , wait, I've been in one or two and nearly died from my fell-right-off-the-turnip truck provinciality . Lol.

Thanks Irina - I did like the moto jacket with them, and I'm making mental note to look for one that is unlined and not as heavy. Twice lately. I've found it to be the right piece -and I bet I've had it for 15 years, rarely worn.

I have worn these bloody shoes almost every day since I bought them 3 weeks ago. I'm not kidding. And everywhere I go, at least one person comments on them. Best purchase ever - not badly priced, and decently comfortable. They also dress up a pair of jeans instantly. I should consider buying a second pair if they go on sale....

Dang! Love those shoes!!! I have those harems so am a bit biased, but no way are you dressed like a hippie, more arty than anything else. (I lived through the hippie era, saw Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, etc.) Jimi Hendrix is my OTT icon.

Due to their comfort, I am planning to take the harems on a trip next week but also found them a challenge. I mostly like crisp and structured (found the best.white.shirt.ever from Nordstrom!!!) and tend to shy away from drapey looks, especially on top, because they make me look dumpy and my bad posture look worse. Toppers were a big challenge. Lotta trial and error, mostly error.

Harems teach one not to cross her knees while sitting or to put foot/ankle on knee the way guys sit. I never knew how much I crossed my knees until I got these babies.

My DD23 is a pretty conservative dresser and only wears skinny jeans or pants; she won't even consider crops of any width or style.

Yeah, I don't see you queued up outside the pot shop in these. More likely at an art gallery opening. I think the moto would add a bit more edge, though, which might make it seem more you.

Your #2 (without the jacket) looks a lot like an outfit I put together with my new EF slouchy pants for summer. I've been taking summer outfit photos this week so I don't have to think come July, and that was one of my favorites.

I really like this Lisa. I prefer it without the jacket as I think it is more elegant/simple... But I still like it with the jacket.

For me this would be sophisticated dinner party wear, heading out for a cocktail with friends, or a 40th or 50th birthday party.

The shoes are indeed fab and the sleek lines enhance the volume very well.

Jenni - Queen St is a deadly hip area/street in Toronto . Best restaurants , galleries and shops . Not for the faint of heart

I love the outfit without the hippie coat. A bit arty but not hippie. I think you were right to swap the jacket.
Do you have a gilet or vest? It can be a good way to add some structure without too much warmth. And, as I mentioned in my post, I use mine to cover my back view

Great idea Brooklyn , but no , nothing in a black woven . I do have a black knit long vest that might have worked - and I'll try it when it's warmer . Thanks for that suggestion - it's a good one .

Love for the outfit, jacket and all. It looks arty, not hippy. Nor do you look braless and lactating. ( been there, done that!) Hippies were not unwashed. They went skinny-dipping regularly.
