Hi Everyone,
I am NOT a stylist or a fashion/style expert. I am not going to claim I know how to make *any* look work at all. But today, as I was trying to style white jeans, I realised I saw a few issues. This is my attempt to try to fix those issues; nothing more.
I wrote about having troubles with wearing white jeans and how LisaP helped me power through it earlier today. On my thread, I read that many other Fabbers are scared of white jeans too. So I'm not alone. I also know that not everyone reads all the comments on threads, so I want to talk about a few points here.
Suz said something on my thread that gave me a lightbulb moment. White jeans are hard to wear the first few times in summer. That's it! After seeing ourselves in darker denim for colder months, the white suddenly puts emphasis on all the areas that we have brilliantly camouflaged in the winter. So it's a 'different' look...and not necessarily different in a bad way. Suz is so smart, ain't she?
So I thought - how to style white jeans in those first few wears while the eye is still adjusting? Even when white jeans are roomy and fit well, they still look very different to darker denim colors. For someone curvy, the biggest problem is that it makes legs look heavier. The lack of the thigh gap is most evident in white jeans, and for me, that's the biggest problem. My eyes keeps going to the crotch/upper thigh area again and again...noticing how WIDE that looks.
(To put this all into perspective: I am 5'3" with a curvy body. I have short legs and am a US size 8-10....usually 8 for bottoms and 10 for top, though this can vary).
I did a little research and saw lots of photos, and this is what I've gathered so far. Angie, if you disagree with any of this, please point us in the right direction. As I said earlier, I'm no expert...this is just what I found through research.
This may not apply to those who wear white jeans in winter too. This may also not apply to those who are long and lean...and those with longer legs, as you can already wear white jeans without any fear.
So, how to smoothen out the transition to wearing white jeans in the summer?
1) Wear white jeans with a longer top. One that covers that pesky upper thigh area. Tunic tops are great. Add a bit of heel to balance out the look, so you look longer & leaner
2) Wear nude or white shoes to further lengthen the leg line
3) Keep the look simple. Don't try to mix too many colors just yet. When all else fails, match your top to your shoes
4) Wear a printed top so that the eye is drawn to the top; not the bottom. Wear neutral sandals.
5) If you can wear black near your face, a black top looks great with white. Add black shoes to bookend. LisaP proved that silver shoes look great too. If you don't wear black, I think grey, red, burgundy and navy are other great colors.
6) If you want to wear white skinnies, a longer voluminous top looks great and is easy to pull off.
I can't exactly put all this data into an outfit creation experiment right away (it's 11pm) but I fully intend to do it this weekend. And post pictures....then compare them to the white jeans outfit photos I took today.
But I do hope some of this info helps those of you who are scared of white jeans. Angie has ALOT more expert advice on the blog, so I'm going to find every single post she's done with white jeans tomorrow and see what else can be added to this list.
Add to this list, ladies. I'm sure together we can come with a White Jeans Troubleshooting Handbook!
