Peri's recent forum discussion and my hectic travel schedule made me aware of the huge hole in my closet for a practical attractive personal item for airline carryon. I tend to do some long, diverse trips with only carry on luggage, and wanted to share what I have just found.
This Tumi Jena convertible backpack/tote/messenger/purse just arrived. Photo 1is shows the way I plan to use it when I'm at my destination - it makes a nice messenger bag, not too big but plenty of room to carry quite a bit as a purse. 2 shows a similar size Tumi model (Jackie) in backpack mode - I forgot to take a photo because I was dashing out of the house for an appt and couldn't wait to use it. 3 shows some of the other ways to carry it. And it has a sleeve fits over my rolling luggage handle or can be zipped at the bottom to make an open pocket.
Inside has a large main compartment with 1 zipper pocket and 3 slip pockets. The outside zip pocket has slip pockets of various sizes. The straps are very clever and wide enough to be comfortable (although I wouldn't take it on a real hike with a lot of weight). I was able to put in my iPad, rollup back cushion, water bottle, light jacket, snacks, two pairs of glasses, wallet, phone, keys, sundries and my smaller clutch/messenger.
I hemmed and hawed over ordering, because I though black would be more practical but didn't want gold zippers The navy with gunmetal hardware fits well with my wardrobe.
The navy is on sale in several places - i think they may be phasing it out, so that was the final push to purchase and I'm so glad I did. I can finally retire my ratty black backpack. I've seen a tan color way but can't find a currently in stock link to post.
