Bear with me as I need to put this somewhere…

A lovely new Canadian scarf brand I’ve had my eye on is having a significant sale this weekend (@dora.nola). I had told myself I’d perhaps ask for the Nana scarf for Christmas, but at 40% off it feels like a now or never decision.

I love the pattern and the colours. But realistically I already have a Hermes square based on similar greens (bought from a vintage picker at a good price), as well as a smaller (more wearable for me) silk scarf in green and blue. Along with a couple of of other quite nice scarves that never saw a lot of wear. Truth is I admire silk scarves so much but I think they are too fussy for my style. I can never figure out the ‘right’ way for *me* to wear them and once I do manage something, they don’t stay tied up for long. I often feel pretentious and self-conscious wearing them. Imposter syndrome, almost. I do not have an obvious bag & shoe complement for this scarf, nor any particular coat or outfit in mind.

Some of this is pandemic doldrums - nowhere to go & nothing to wear. And some might just be accepting truths about my style.

I like silk scarves too! FWIW, I like wearing them inside the neck of my coat in winter - even with a super casual puffer - because they are warm, and so much softer than most woolly or synthetic scarves. The more you wear one, the less you ‘think’ about it, IYKWIM.

Thanks runcarla, idea noted! I never think of them as warm - casual take appreciated as that’s my dominant lifestyle/formality level - maybe I overthink them!

Oh, those are so pretty!

I am very simple with my scarf style. I do not do anything tricky with them. I like a long or large square scarf to wrap loosely around my neck once and let the ends hang down. Small scarves sort of flummox me as they seem more conservative/traditional or fussy. Maybe tying them on a handbag would do.

I don't think either decision is wrong. Scarves last a long time and are great heritage items so longevity is there. But on the other hand, maybe you would be better spending money on a bag or sunglasses or something that you will wear more.

I struggle with scarves - I do have a couple I find easier, and a couple of silk ones I adore but rarely wear. I find larger ones easier than smaller. But if they are my colours and I like them, I will let them sit around for quite some time before editing them out.

Why not: in my personal experience if I don’t do something I won’t change my habits. I am not a scarf wearer and still have a drawerful- inherited from Mum, gifts, or bought by me more than a decade ago before I realised this.
So, will you change your habits? Only you can know!

I love silk scarves but can’t wear square ones. Rectangle or long ones work pretty well for me - I carry it with me often using it on public transit, or just in the evening chill. It’s a very pretty one in the pic - but would you wear it often enough to justify the purchase? Something to think about.

I am at the age where I thought I would be an insouciant scarf wearer. It did not happen. Instead I buy good jewelry, which is much more to my actual tastes and dressing capabilities.

Beautiful patterns and colors on the website.

I enjoy scarves and don't do fancy/complicated knotting, just kerchief style or looped around the neck. Under a sweater collar if my neck feels itchy. Though my nicer silks don't see much use since I stopped working.

But an object of beauty always catches one's eye. You are walking through it mentally, so the end decision will be yours. If it really is true love though, remember scarves can be framed. The site also offers the pattern as a narrow twilly to tie on a bag or wrap around your wrist.

Just fyi - I don't think you (anyone) "needs" to have complements. The nice thing about multi-color scarves is they do seem to go with most anything.

I have several silk scarves but struggle with their slippery “ floaty” nature even though silk is considered the epitome of scarf fabric I gravitate to tissue wools and cotton- linen that seem to “ stay put” better. So am likely to offload some silk scarves soon ( admittedly do not have any heirloom or designer types).

I hear you on silk scarf love/admiration. the intricacy of the pattern and design weaving, the color richness, I love it all.

a drawerful languishes because I wear only 2 90x90 cm squares regularly which mr bj1111 calls my Korean airlines flight attendant look.

but I still lust after the pretty pretty designs and nuts that you introduced me to dora Nola.

Thank you all for your therapeutic and practical replies. I’m letting the sale pass me by for now, but am still considering both the scarf and the ideas that have come up. If I truly love the scarf the full price isn’t actually unaffordable, and conversely sale goggles shouldn’t be what pushes me to buy either. Right?

Gorgeous scarf! Maybe you can wear them more often if you change the use, scarves also work well on the handle of the bag, as a belt, as a bracelet...

That *is* pretty. I stopped buying silk scarves personally because I don’t really do anything with them and when I do feel a need for one, on that rare occasion, it’s always the one Hermès scarf that works…

I know what you mean about scarves--I go back and forth about them myself. Too fussy...but beautiful...but are they me?...but so beautiful!...too busy with my specs?....but beautiful...and so on!

I find silk squares fussy too, and usually end up putting them on my bag handles. Long scarves always feel more useful and versatile.

It feels like a timely day to bump this up, re: FOMO and slow-er fashion.
I elected not to purchase the Dora Nola scarf and reject the "FOMO" caused by the sale. I am very happy I did so, because I realized that a scarf in another colourway might be more useful (since I do already have a green scarf). I started looking at their other colours. Then a few months ago they released new designs - but, unlike so many brands that create FOMO, the original designs are still available.
The inspirations behind my new scarf crush apparently include Matisse as well as traditional Oaxacan embroidery, both things I love. I am also a huge fan of insect motifs and a former bio major who took a class in entomology. It's really perfect - I am just deciding between the large and small versions, and it's nice to know I can take my time with it!

I am definitely in the minority here, but I love scarves… silk or otherwise. I have a big collection of neckerchiefs, smaller squares, plus a goodly number of the larger silk ones. I’ll pop one on at least once a week and wear with everything from a tee shirt and jeans to shirt and blazer. No fancy or complicated knots. I feel jaunty, French and … I dunno … somehow complete when I don a scarf. Will say, I never see anyone else ever with a jaunty scarf so maybe I’m fooling myself and instead I look dated, mid-Western and over-done! Haha. I don’t care, I love ‘em!

I like your attitude AndiB! When I had to go to my first "back to the office" day earlier this year, I ended up in classics: dark skinnies, white blouse, riding boots, and a beautiful silk scarf that tied everything together and made it an "outfit". I've realized that while I might not wear them often, they are classics that I can wear for life.

These are so pretty! How fun to let an idea bubble for a while and then find a better solution. I don't wear scarves a lot these days but they are small to store so I have saved them for when I change my mind.
