The YLF forum has always struck me as a place where forum commenters try very hard to be tactful, sensitive, and responsible. And Angie is very good at gently reminding us of the "rules" if a thread goes sideways.
Like Isabel, I'm not fond of careless labels used to describe a stereotyped image or a careless generalization, but I think my dislike has to be tempered with the realization these labels are almost inevitably going to be part of a lively discussion. Asking everyone to self-monitor every label, categorization, abbreviation, and self-mocking comment would be both constraining and, ultimately, futile in such a diverse forum. Instead of feeling insulted or marginalized, my inclination is monitor my own reaction and not assume ill intentions on the part of others.
Seeing that YLF thread labeled a "fat hating" thread is a good example. As someone who last wore a size 2 in kindergarten, I was blown away by the openness, support, and insight of the YLF community on a highly sensitive issue. I have enormous respect for Angie's courage in letting that thread stand because, to me, the end result was the exact opposite of "fat shaming". So--two different reactions and two different labels for the same thread--and neither of us owe an apology to each other or need to self-censor our labels as long as we disagree within the "rules" Angie has established for her website.
