Oldies, outfit 1, short blue jacket

Here comes the first oldie. A short blue Escada Sport jacket in cotton/silk blend, bought about 7-8 years ago (don’t remember exactly actually which year). Hasn’t been worn almost at all during the last 4 years. Now, it will get a new chance.

I combined the jacket with a light blue silk blouse, dark brown trousers, blue shoes, floral patterned silk scarf (bought on a shopping day in Copenhagen with my friends 12 years ago), large brown pearls and sunnies. I also tried to match my eyeliner with the blue colours. Don’t know if that looks dated, though ...

Unfortunately haven’t managed to get any good pictures today, so it will be a few bad selfies.

After wearing the jacket in the office today the whole day, I have a pretty clear idea whether I want to keep it or not.

But I am curious what you guys think of the jacket and the styling. Grateful for your comments, ideas and whatever comes to mind.

I like the outfit you've made, and the jacket sounds like it's a great fabric and a lovely color. If it were mine, those puffed shoulders would make things more difficult for me, but you can pull off some drama.

You manage to look great in anything, Katerina. That said, I wonder if part of the reason why you almost haven't used the jacket at all in recent years is the colour. You seem to prefer more dramatic, deep, bold or clear colours than the soft blue of this jacket. The clear blue colour of your silk blouse is a lovely contrast to your dark hair.

The outfit is great, especially the brown pearls, the fit of the top of the sleeves, with the puffed shoulders seems a bit off. Not horrible, but also not quite your usual flawless fit.

I am hesitant to say anything that might be perceived as negative, since you look absolutely fabulous in everything you put on Katerina! But I do agree that the only thing throwing me a bit is the puffiness in the shoulder. It's just not quite as sharp as I am used to seeing you in - as Jenn says though, that bit of detail is a softball for you to manage. And, I absolutely LOVE you in blue, and your styling is - as usual - flawless and fantastic. The fit and texture are also gorgeous.

I agree with Kathie and Trontogirl. This jacket is not in line with your usual style quotient. In my opinion, it is the puffy sleeves. But once again, you look astonishing beautiful. So even a jacket that is not perfect is gorgeous on you.

Your make-up is extremely fab, love the blue eyeliner! I like this jacket but agree with The Cat that the colour is quite a departure from your usual bold, saturated palette. The poofy shoulders look fun and intentional to me rather than dated, but I don't think that makes them any less challenging to style!

Styled perfectly! Beautiful scarf and eyeliner. Your skin is so soft! I have seen blue eye makeup in very recent fashion magazines. For me personally I feel a little 80s wearing it which can be good or bad depending on if I'm feeling old that day or not!
As to the jacket, I like it. It doesn't look quite like the rest of your current style though.

The colors are perfection - the nude lippie, beautiful scarf... I like these shades almost as much as your bold brights.

As others have said, though, the fit of the jacket across the shoulders - coupled with the gathered shoulder, looks off from your usual high standards.

Still, super pretty, polished, and feminine.

Lovely jacket ,I really like the unusual cut and I think that the blue eye makeup works well with your dark eyes.l see what others have said about the jacket and I disagree however I think a sleeker top underneath would help showcase the jacket as it’s quite a statement on its own and although lovely Iwonder if the flowing top underneath is fighting with the “fussiness “of the jacket.

You look amazing, as ever! I agree that the puffy sleeves are a style departure and would probably be a reason for me to pass it along, but no wonder you have kept it -- the fabric is so beautiful. It's also possible that styling it as Cardiff girl suggests might give it a different life. It's really a question of how you feel about those sleeves for your current style.

Thank you ALL so much for taking your time looking and analyzing. Your wise and observant comments are very, very helpful to me. And thank you also for the extremely kind comments and compliments, you cannot imagine what that does to my confidence - such a boost.

The truth is that I have never liked myself in softer or medium blue colours. The jacket, however, has a slight element of cobalt in the texture, I have therefore not been sure whether it is the colour that is wrong for me.
I also don’t like so short jackets any more - the length of this one bothers me. That is why I used the longer top underneath - tried to extend the length...

Interestingly, the puffed shoulders never bothered me, have not reflected over them at all until many of you noticed them today. My question is - is the fit wrong on my body or does the jacket fit as it should, but does not look good on me for some other reason - because of the style and my appearance, proportions of my body etc.? I honestly cannot see that.

As such, the jacket is of great quality - the fabric is outstanding and the tailoring excellent. It is simply a beautifully made jacket. This is why I have not let it go yet.

Question:
Are puffed sleeves dated now (in general, I mean)? They were very popular on jackets when this jacket was made, I remember them being on trend, but don’t remember exactly how many years ago.... 8 or 9 perhaps.

You look fantastic. I agree with others that your make up is perfect. I do like the jacket on you, both the color and the style of the jacket. It doesn't look dated to me, but then I am not the best person to ask about trends. You have said the length is not what you prefer these days. Have you tried to style it with a skirt instead of pants? or over a dress?

Hi Katerina- for once I will by pass specific comments on top and scarf which is super- I want to talk jackets if I may-
I love the jacket- it has a tweedy quality and a texture that is striking. Love jackets with that type of collar (if that neckline can be considered as having a mini collar) I think it is unusual in a fab way. I think the color, seaming and zipper detail are great also.
About the sleeve/ shoulder area..... yes the little bit of puffiness dates it a little but not badly. Because there are so many other great details on the jacket that draws the eye and attention, the shoulder does not “stick out “ as it would if it was a plain coat and the shoulder was the only place to look.
I had a skirt suit I loved and looked fab in with those same shoulders. In an attempt to update it ( even though I sew) I took it to someone to try and minimize puffiness. It made it too tight and restricted movement. I kept the skirt for a while but threw the jacket away. I was heartbroken. I should have left it alone and continued to wear it and love it.
So unless you want to turn it into a wonderful vest- please just wear it as it’s fantastic self because it is truly beautiful.

Katerina I don't think puff sleeves are dated, because they are now 80's retro. So similar to mod styling being 60's, puff sleeves are 80's. I must say I always enjoy your styling masterclasses, you look wonderful. It is the little touches that really make your look so special, the brown pearls, the blue eyeliner...in my book, you can do no wrong!

The jacket is very nice, you are right about puffed sleeves ,maybe 8-9 years ago.I have one short blazer with that sleeves and love it and wear with skirts and dresses, as it is short for pants. If you feel good in this jacket wear it with pleasure.

Once again, you have created a gorgeous outfit! I am glad you are giving some old favorites another try. I noticed the puffed shoulders and my first thought was, “Look at that. Katerina is going to make those shoulders stylish again!”

Hi Katerina -- I have the same issues when assessing fit on my own body. From the WIW, I do not think the fit of this jacket is wrong for your body. It IS a different style/silhouette than what I am accustomed to seeing you wear. That threw me off a little bit. Additionally, the color is not as "clear" as I am accustomed to seeing. Neither of those factors affect how impeccably you dress.

This jacket works for you. I love the cut and tweediness of the jacket. The puffy sleeves do not date the jacket. I only commented on them because I did notice them. They are not a problem though.

As we go forward in this challenge, I will be paying more attention to the colors you wear. I feel this blue struck a discordant cord and I need to understand why? Perhaps then I can provide you with a better response.

On a side note, I have only recently begun to notice your makeup. It is exceptionally well applied (i.e., looks like you don't wear any makeup whatsoever, except some eye liner). I have recently been experimenting with makeup. I don't apply it nearly was well as you do, but even with my uneven hand, it makes a major difference in how polished I look.

Lovely to see you in a different colour palette. Another fab outfit. I think what may be bothering you about the jacket is this: the shoulders have a little puff, which is fine, but it may be this feature combined with the shortness and nipped in waist of the jacket that is making you feel slightly unbalanced. If it was a few cm longer and not so shaped at the waist I think it would be a little more relaxed looking. Currently it has so much shape to it it’s almost a teeny bit star-trek. Please don’t take my words harshly Katerina, you look divine in it still, I just think it’s a little far away from your typical style and I wonder if it’s worth the effort involved in styling it when you have so many other fab clothes?
I think it does fit you though, and is not a bad look by any means.
However, in my opinion, and I know many will disagree, red leaning blues (the jacket) don’t mix well with yellow leaning blues (the eyeliner and the top). I have a poison eye for it.

I agree with Bijou. Puffy shoulders are retro 1980s and not out of style. I have seen them here on current jackets. I do wonder if the colour suits your current style preferences. But I can see that it has a lovely texture. You look fab, as always.

Well it is indeed a beautfiful piece. And you sure know how to bring out its cobalt sparkle (eye liner, scarf).

You might have found it challenging to pair with other items if your recent wardrobe has been based on brighter palettes. However, the shade of this jacket would be perfect with a denim outfit. For example: with denim and firy orange; mustard yellow; tans and browns. It's also very textured, so you can take advantage of this, and try with a simple black or white tee, or a very soft turtleneck sweater for contrast. I think it could also tone down leather, give it a little rebellious note.

I like it a lot here, and I find the layered look you have created very pleasing. You brought it back towards your palette by pairing it with a light blue shirt and addining eyeliner. It's really nice.

For fit, in a couple of the pictures (2, somewhat in 3), the fabric appears to be pulling just below the puff. It’s hard for me to tell if that’s just the way you’re holding your arms, though. Or perhaps, if that’s a design detail, that makes the puff more pronounced.

The texture of the jacket is wonderful- different from your usual color, but a lovely departure.

I think the color looks great on you, and the puffy sleeves still work - I do agree with you that I find the jacket a bit too short. The combination of the puffy sleeves and the short length make it look just the tiniest bit dated to me. If the length really bothers you, maybe pass it on? Though it does work with the longer top!

It is a nice jacket on you but I am not too sure about the shoulder fit or maybe that is how a puffed shoulder fits? The outfit is lovely regardless.
