Folks, I put on this dress for a tiny Cinco de Mayo celebration, craving bright color. I’ve had the dress for a few years but it’s barely been worn because it’s too long and I never managed to get to a tailor. I always loved the colors and pattern, though it does feel hot on the legs (thick tee-shirt material).

I put it on and thought UGH! Tried various sandals, tried sneakers, tried a denim jacket, a long jacket, ugh ugh double ugh. It all just looked soooooo dated. Just really dull and like something I might have worn to a casual beach wedding in 2004. In the end I ran out of time and just wore it, but did not feel fab.

I don’t know how something so colorful could look boring. What is going on? Has style shifted or just my eye? Is it the V neck that is the problem? I am wearing a belt, a very thin black one.

Do you wear this kind of long jersey dress these days? Any suggestions on styling?

ETA: I forced myself to wear it again and play with pinning, knotting etc to figure out options. I think if I have the seamstress do a kind of knot (pics 3,4) at the waist to echo the knotted bodice, it works. New length is fine and pattern placement better than if I just chopped it off. With this adjustment I have a better idea of how the dress will fit into my life! It would be perfect for a BBQ or any event with kids or dogs, as it’s comfy and stretchy and would be impossible to stain! THAnK YOu all for your guidance!
