Last-summer's dresses work for me. wiw 7/17

I've been enjoying all of the "summer of the dress" posts here and on the blog, but.....the fitted waist, longer length pretty retro silhouette is a but out of my comfort zone. I'd feel like a poseur, trying to be pretty, even though I LOVE the look on Angie and several others. Anyways, I've been wearing my collection of last-year's dresses and still feeling good - a less fitted look makes me feel more comfortable, and still feels reasonably current. This dress also has special meaning ; Vivian (viva) was wearing it when we met in Brooklyn last summer (with black/white Vans and a navy Tory Burch bag) and I fell in love (with her, and with the dress -lol). Ordered it the minute I got home, which (as I've whined spitefully and enviously about over the years here) is not how I shop at all. I rarely order on line . I was feeling confident and added the shoes to my cart at the same time - and absolutely love their refined and narrow cut. Makes me feel more polished.

This dress is reasonably crisp and polished for a workday (although when I looked at the pictures , it is rumply in the bottom half, but I've also been in the car all day) and has pockets It works with lots of my shoes - white Stan Smiths, metallic sandals and sneakers, and a matching blue Fly London platform x cross strap slide. I'm not feeling my metallic sneakers this summer as much though - so am giving them a break until next year. Too ubiquitous maybe? I'd love a pair of mustard yellow shoes of some sort - based on JAileen's recent capsule post - and will consider some for next summer.

This bag has been one of my best "designer" purchases and well worth the money . I wear it often, and with all kinds of outfits. I like the unexpected colour, the size , the closure, and the strap. 10/10 for this one. New white mani today, and pearl /gold jewellery (inspiration : Angie of course).

Anyways - thanks for reading/looking. Off to work at my "other job" and think I'll wear this (we have been given a reprieve from all black , apparently ) for my short evening shift.

Thoughts, jokes, suggestions, always welcome. Are my sack dresses sadly dated? What else do you wear when you don't have a waist or a torso anymore?

Looks great! I love those shoes - sneaker-like yet more refined.

I'm more comfortable in sack dresses too. I have a few with more defined waists but I'm built pretty straight and I tend to gain weight in my torso so I like to "surrender the waist".

The cut of the shoes is very refined, what a good spot. I wondered what colours the Marc Jacobs bag is, it looks lovely. And your hands look so neat and elegant. I really enjoy wearing clothes that have special connections. I hope you have a good shift.

Love it on you! Like you, the waist-emphasizing retro look dresses that work so well on Angie and others do not work for me. As long as I can find them long enough, shift or sack dresses are it for me.

I almost got that dress from everlane, so it’s fun to see it on you. Super cool. Love the white mani - and your make up looks fantastic!

I think it takes a bit of chutzpah to surrender the waist. It’s less of a traditional women’s silhouette, and sometimes feels just a little sad to have to do so. You make it look polished and feminine and super cool. I’m a big fan of your style!

Thanks, friends. Nothing wrong with a sack dress as far as I'm concerned. And I'm not surrendering my waist, because I don't seem to have one now! No one needs to see what looks like a pregnant belly and broad butt with a fitted waist accentuating both :0

I think it takes more chutzpah to define and show off body parts than it does to hide them. If I had a thin and curvy shape, I'd be all over that look. But reality is - this

Wow, love the whole outfit, you look so crisp and elegant. Very classy. I have a little MBMJ Natasha mini that I love (the original not the redo which was not as nice). It looks similar and it's such a great bag especially with the zip compartment, light but holds a lot and what an awesome color. Shoes are tdf cute and very flattering and practical. All around fantastic outfit!!

I think this is my favourite look of the looks I have seen on you. LOVE the dress and the styling. I have seen similar striped dresses in shops this year too, it might have been in Marimekko... The dress is perfectly current and you look gorgeous in it.
Mani is fab with the pearl ring and the bag is super.

I love this dress on you. Everlane is so good at that casually elegant look. I may have to copy with this year's version of the dress.

Although I love the waist cinching looks on Angie and others, it's not a style for me. I don't think I"ve had a waist since the 90s.

This is my kind of dress too! This dress looks way better on you tan on the model, Lisa, and you always accesorize your outfits so well. That pearl ring is beautiful.

Looking good! I have an oversized shirt in the same stripe and I love it. I think it could also go well with a hot pink lip, just for something festive. You could also try it over slim white jeans in summer or a black slim jean in autumn.
I hope sack dresses aren’t dated because I love them. I’m pretty sure they’re not dated..... just taking a slight back seat at the moment.

I love a sack dress and wear them myself. You look fab in your striped sack dress! Even if I had a waist to speak of, the last thing I’d want to wear in our heat & humidity is anything that ties at the waist!

Oh those gorgeous shoes! I still covet them. I jumped on them when Everlane first came out with them, but sadly, they were too wide for my feet.

You look great, Lisa! And while I love to define my waist, more and more I am adding shifts (especially with narrow skirt finishes) precisely because the comfortable hourglass days get fewer and fewer. Especially in summer, when it is too hot for Spanx or anything clingy, the straight dress (even straight maxi dress) in cool natural fibers does the trick. I wouldn`t mind finding more for myself. A JJill maxi dress in linen mix (no longer available) has been in heavy rotation for those reasons.

Love this! Everything you wear looks super. It’s all the pieces (shoes, hair, jewelry) that elevate your outfits, Lisa. I can’t wear dresses that showcase my waist anymore, either, because it went missing a few years ago. It definitely makes it more challenging to create interesting, flattering outfits, but if you enjoy fashion, it’s still fun.

I have been alternating two sack dress all summer so far and they make this look body con in comparison . It has been so long since I had a waist that it never occurs to be that I might emphasize it. You look fab!

I'll join you in the no-waist club. I have always had that problem so am kind of used to hiding it. The retro fit-and-flare dresses are really cute but not for me. Love this dress on you and with those shoes it's perfect.
