Lands End Puffer Coat Question

The two things I have mentioned are on my list for fall are a new puffer coat (an absolute MUST in our Canadian prairie climate) and a pair of black, flat knee high leather boots.

The Lands End puffer coat is a popular choice here on YLF (waving to Rita!) and it is an excellent price point right now. Would it be smart of me to BBQ on this item? If so, is it true to size?

I got the xsp, which is a size down from what I would normally wear in tops (I usually wear 4/6 or Petite Small in tops. Land's end stuff is cut on the larger size, which is nice for wearing lots of layers. Mine fits perfectly as an xsp but I couldn't wear a blazer and sweater under it. In our winter, I would normally wear 1 layer and a coat.

Rita, interesting about the size - maybe this is my problem and why DH doesn't like it on me? I went a size up, but it would be a free to exchange for my normal size XS.

Rae, I read the reviews before I decided to order it. Most people said that the land's end sizing runs large. Also the reviews sometimes list people's heights and weights, and it seemed like the people who were close to my size were happiest with the xsp.

It is puffy but pretty streamlined for a puffer coat. We have to wear puffers in the winter around here and this is really the best fit and most streamlined one I have seen. Perhaps the $300+ patagonia's are slimmer but I can't afford them and they don't come in my petite size any way.

Thank you Rita (and Rae) for your feedback - I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this item as it's an absolute necessity in our winters and come fall, there won't be a petite in my size at this price point.

I'm going to order two sizes as the return shipping is only $7.95. Now the real question is which colour: I'm stuck between red and bright teal. What's the consensus?

I would say red for you, Shannon. It's a fun colour and works with your winter wardrobe.

Shannon, if it helps, I got a S in the JJill shirt and a S in the Lands End puffer and usually wear an 8 in jackets and tops these days. My mom also got one of the LE puffers and she loves it.

I got red (it is a deep rose red) and my mom got the bright aqua. I think either of these would work for you but lean towards the teal/aqua. Don't forget to check the ratings for low temp on the jackets. Some are rated for -40 and some only -30 or even warmer.

Oooohhh...that does help Dianthus! I got a medium petite in the J Jill blouse so thought I would order both a medium petite and a large petite in the puffer. I need to be able to layer a blazer underneath the puffer. What do you think?

I vote red! The teal was pretty but it was a little shinier than I expected. And the red is just gorgeous!

I think the medium will have plenty of room. They have a code for $20 off $75 and free shipping. If you don't have it, I might still have it at my home e-mail. Just let me know if you need it and I will look after work.

I also bought a fairly pricey down coat locally and think the LE is pretty close in quality and was a fraction of the cost. The ones rated for the colder temps have a heavier shell I think.

Dianthus - I have the code and it entered just fine. I still think I'll order both sizes. Better to send one back then find the medium is a bit tight with a blazer underneath and then find the large is no longer available.

Seems bizarre to potentially cross off a winter need item in mid June!

I actually think in this case it is prudent. Where else can you get a puffer rated to -40 for less than $75? And especially one that is being recommended by your fashion posse?

Rita and Shannon, how tall are you? I am tempted to try a different style in XSP because it says the shoulders are scaled down in P sizes, but their size chart does not give any info on how it affects the length of coats.

Rae, I do think it would be great if you could snap up one of these babies at such a great price ! As Rita says, it's gear and you'd wear it infrequently and it doesn't necessarily have to be an 11, you know?

I am 5' tall. The waist on the xsp hits me at the perfect spot. The arm length is a bit short, perhaps by 1/2". When it is seriously cold, I will wear it with gloves so it will be a non issue. If you have normal length arms, I wouldn't get the petite. The arm length will be too short.

Believe me Heather, when we have our usual 6 weeks of brutal weather (night time lows of -35 to -40 celcius and day time highs of only -20 to -25 celcius), you couldn't sweat if you tried!

Good to know about the arm length Rita - I have very short arms so this shouldn't be an issue for me but could be for Rae.

Looking at my picture from February, it doesn't look like the sleeve length is too short, but it feels like it would be better if it was a little longer when it is really cold outside.

I know....I'm actually contemplating it as well. I wonder if the P small would be my best bet? I already have a puffer coat, mind you...but at $59 (what it would amount to with the discount) that is pretty remarkable.

I think you'll be happy. I live in mine. They do run a tad large; I think ordering two sizes was smart, so you can see what you'll be happiest with.

p.s. and definitely red!

Thank you for the info! I just ordered FOUR items to try in XS. Chat rep said that you can return to Sears even if you use Paypal, so FYI no return shipping charges if you are near a Sears! I really hope one of them works out; the down is really lightweight to carry and squishes nice and small for travel.

I really like the fur but I think MaryK found it to be TMGO, esp with her blonde hair. The vest is very nice and could be a good piece for your climate too.

Here's hoping it works for you Rae - unfortunately for us Canadians, they don't offer the return to Sears, but it's only $7.95 for return shipping and they just take it off your refund so to me, that's pretty darned reasonable. Keeping my fingers crossed!

What a great price. Sadly, i find that Lands end is cut really wide in the shoulder. If I size down to fit my shoulders, then the arms are too short

I own one of the vests, Rae, and it really like it. I wear it when I'm skating or cross-country skiing and sometimes just as a fun casual piece around town.
