Dear Fabbers, once again I need your help. I want to refresh my winter coat capsule and I used some end of season sales opportunity to do that. I ordered this coat from Boden and now I have to decide should I keep it or return. Issue here is that I have limited space in my coat closet and have to enforce very strict one in - one out rule. So I selected this very old red coat to be the one out. I have not worn it at all this winter. It is red but not my happy red, it is cold true red, while I prefer warmer orangy red. I never wore it much so it is still in almost new condition and this is why I am so conflicted. It is also very good quality and was expensive. Worst category to donate. Is it new coat better then then the old one? Which one do you like? And regardless of which red I like better, what do you think which red loves me more? Please help me decide.

Anchie, I think the warm red that you love, loves you right back imo, whereas the cool red still looks nice, but not quite as perfect for you.

Someone will be delighted with your old-but-looks-new coat if you decide to donate it

I prefer the Boden coat. The other one looks a little big, and the collar is much larger. I prefer the smaller collar, and the general fit of the Boden coat. I’m no expert, though.

I hope my husband never hears of one in one out with respect to coats!!

I do like the older one. I like the collar and fewer buttons. But who knows, those things might be out of style, I don’t know!

I also think both colours look good on you, however, the orange-red is more in line with what you normally wear.

The deep red looks a bit too big though, but are you wearing the right layers under it?

I have to admit I love the first one and think it looks beautiful on you.
In many ways it seems like a more versatile red. Maybe if you could view it more a neutral than a cold red you might wear it more? Maybe over warmer colors to balance the coolness? Do you ever wear brown?

I never say this but in this case I might give it a little more time before deciding, the style doesn't look dated to me, nor as though it will be soon.

I think both reds love you! The sleeves of the darker one look a bit long? Is that the case?

I think you can’t go wrong either way, so go with what makes you happy.

If the Boden coat makes you happier, keep that one. They both look great but I agree in slightly preferring the warmer red on you.

I personally prefer the old coat and think I see "you" better, in the new one I see the coat. Never ask me about something to do with sunk cost. I cannot get my head around it. And yet we lost some money on an investment and I could get my head around that as there was nothing I could do. I accepted it. My head is crazy.

Both coats are beautiful and both reds look good on you, but I think the new Boden coat fits you better and the color looks better on you.

Is the older coat the first one ? I prefer that one and actually think the bluer red is nicer on you .

Hi Anchie --

I actually prefer the fit of the Boden and the color of the older red coat -- but if YOU don't like the other red it's better to pass it on.

If you do donate, though, I'd suggest having a 1 in, 1-definitely-going-out-when-seasonally-appropriate unless you have a friend who'd take it and wear it.

That's such a nice coat it'd be great to consign or donate to a place you know helps women directly. Around here, anyway, it'd be early fall before they took winter coats and other places might just dump for scrap.

To my eye, no contest. I MUCH prefer the second new coat - #2. Better fit, cut and colour. Elegant. Boden all the way.

Thank you all for your feedback. Such a split opinions, almost half of you like the older coat better and think that cool red suits me more. Interesting. I could never tell wich color looks better on me, so I always go with whichever I like more and which color makes me happy. New Boden coat is slightly in the lead, and Angie also like that one better. I never regretted listening to her opinion so I am leaning towards keeping and donatthe old one. There is one issue with the Boden coat that I forgot to mention that bugs me, but not sure if it is a deal breaker. It does not have useful pockets. Because of their placement high on the waist I don’t think I will be able to use them.

I much prefer the newer coat in terms of style and fit. But, like Vix, I somewhat prefer the colour of the first coat on you. If you prefer the colour of the Boden, I think that’s your coat.

Tough call; I honestly can't decide. I'm more drawn to cool reds myself, but I think the warmer poppy-red looks very good on you. Are you certain the new coat will get more wear than the old one, or is it time to re-evaluate your need for a long red coat altogether? The older coat has a very classic shape, and I actually think it creates a better line over the cropped wide legs. I bet it looks wonderful over skirts/dresses too. Sleeves might be a tad long on that one? The Boden coat definitely feels more modern, and I think it would be the better of the two over slim bottoms -- skinnies, pencil skirts, etc. I like the visual effect of the bold buttons on the new coat; it looks to me like they end a little higher up than the buttons on the old coat -- will that make the coat drafty? I'm not sure the pockets would be a deal-breaker for me. How much do you use your coat pockets?

if you don't wear the old one and think you will wear the new one...then donate or sell the old one and keep the new....

I can see some issues with the “ old” coat but really am not sold in the new coat. I think the fit is slightly off; I hate pockets like that myself, both for functionality and for figure-flattery, and have passed up many a coat because of that, which is hard but has felt right for me. I might actually keep looking unless you’re very keen on adding this color right now or have experienced this coat as a HEWI.

I prefer the older coat. To me the new coat has a trendy feel where the older one feels timeless. Just an opinion of course.

I have to chime in again about the coat

FWIW, to my eye, the Boden coat is the timeless classic because of the equestrian vibe, length, and superior tailored fit. The older coat looks more "dated" next to it - the sleeve width is off.

I have to agree with Angie - I have 10+ years old black coat that is cut very similar to the Boden coat and I still wear it a lot and it feels current. While on the other hand I stopped wearing this red coat few years ago because I felt somehow off in it.
La Ped also has great point abot the need for long red coat. Thing is my window for wearing wool coat is very short. I get cold easily and I commute by public transport and on foot, so most of the winter I am in puffer coat. Just two weeks ago I was still in my puffy and then straight to trench coat. And today already it is short sleeve without the jacket. I may get more use in the fall though but not more then few weeks. And I do already have before mentioned black coat, another very old camel coat and a yellow Boden coat from last season that I wear the most. I did not refresh my coat capsule for many years until last year, because all my coats are good quality and in good condition and it feels silly to replace them. But is it 4 too much for such a short season? I have only 3 puffer coats and I wear them from November to March. Maybe this spot in my small coat closet should be reserved for another puffy?

The Boden because of the fit, it looks really nice on you.

I prefer the new Boden coat. I think that the color is slightly better on you, and it just seems a little more interesting. I also think the fit is better; the older one seems slightly too big in spots. The Boden one seems more streamlined.

Ah, a difficult decision but the Boden coat wins in my eyes. I love vintage coats but the Boden coat has a better shoulder fit, and I like the warmer, brighter red on you. Love the jeans btw!

Hearing more about your climate and coat needs I think...donate the old and return the new.

You live in puffers and have a black and camel wool, so: wear the yellow Boden that's only a year old til you start to tire of it and get something then.

If you need help spending what you save on warm-weather items I'm sure this group has no shortage of ideas.
