So I think I am ready to bite the bullet and discuss my last haircut.

In a word, it was a disaster. Not only did my hair stylist cut my hair far shorter than I had in mind, or the pictures I showed her indicate, but somewhere mid-cut she revealed she is anti-vaccination and not vaccinated. Now, I don't want to get into a debate about that, but I won't be returning and will be seeking a new stylist after many years. Sigh.

Anyway, after trying different things the below represents pretty much the best I can do. I am very open, and openly requesting, styling tips for very short hair and also goal haircuts. I have in mind something that will stay out of my eyes, but much more tousled and less helmet like. I am not posting my original inspo pics yet because I want you all to have an open mind . Suggestions very, very welcome!

#1 is a selfie that tells me that I had better be careful with what colors I wear and add some lipstick.
#2 is a newly thrifted M Missoni tunic that I think works much better with my haircut leading me to think about Kibbe et al but we can get into that later
#3 The full outfit attached to the head in #1, sorry for the mess.
#4 If you are looking for me, I will probably be with my new best friend The Hat.

The new hair cut is short but it looks great with your new best friend.

I think you look gorgeous but if you don’t feel like you then it is wrong. I don’t have any suggestions right now but I will be interested to see what others say.

Two family members ventured out to get haircuts last week. One was later notified that someone in the salon had tested positive for COVID and the other didn’t believe in vaccines etc. so much for precautions.

It might not be what you wanted but it looks fine! I didn’t know what to expect before I clicked on the photo but you look very pretty, hat or no hat.

I try not to get too stressed about hair because it grows, yet I understand the disappointment and angst after a bad or too-short cut. Maybe some extra product to give you a tousled look until it grows a bit? I have found some “lift” or movement seems to help after a too-short haircut (mine is much longer now, but I had shorter hair for years).

Double-thumbs down on an antivax hairdresser...that is scary.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience at the hairdresser. I actually like it in the full body picture, so I think that more tousled is the way to go.

Well, you could wear a rag on your head and still look beautiful, Shevia! In another month or two, with about an inch of growth, you will have your ringlets back. Your ‘new’ cut looks like the first 3 photos (below) and I think you could grow it towards the look of #4 or #5 if you are looking for a shorter fringe that stays out of your eyes. (You could probably wear any style that Audrey Tatou has tried!)

FWIW, I like the short cut!

It's cute haircut - looks great with or without the hat!
I completely understand frustration though - happened to me more than once before.
I think you've got the "Soviet Union style" of haircut - it's always takes 2-3 weeks to start looking the way we wanted it to look in a first place .

I'm very sorry about your experience. Everything is so terribly fraught right now.

I think you look great in the short cut - your eyes and smile look EXTRAORDINARY!

And it will grow back (I know that doesn't help right now).

Treat yourself to some fancy hair products - waxes, pomades, anything that strikes your fancy. Oribe is expensive but smells heavenly! Also Bumble and Bumble. Sorry I can't suggest specific products - I think your hair is thicker than mine, and curly too (which I envy - I'm just the average limp mouse).

Thank you all so much! Truthfully I am not really that upset about it - certainly not compared to my younger self anyway . It was more the double whammy of an unexpected haircut and the need to find a new stylist that got to me.

MsMaven Thank you! Your story is so frustrating. Fortunately I am vaccinated so I was not so much worried about myself but not happy - to say the least - with the situation.
Aquamarine Yes, it is only hair and mine grows fairly fast. But it was still an ungood experience overall.

Thank you Carla! I was hoping you would come through with your amazing inspo pictures! Yes Audrey Tatou is one of my hair muses as her hair is thick and somewhat curly like mine. I will try to go for #1 in the meantime. The sad truth is it wasn't just a too short cut, but not so well done so it is hard to style.

Sloper - Thank you for your very kind comments! Yes, this haircut has reminded me how thick my hair still is (nothing compared to younger me but I digress). I did splurge on a hair paste which was a disaster. Perhaps I should not have chosen hair clay for men !

Well the new haircut is very like mine, ha ha. Mine was done yesterday after 9 weeks. I quite like very short because it lasts. I don’t think you need a hat.
But it is a change for you and I am sorry you need a new stylist

I 100% agree with Carla, you do look beautiful because you have a very beautiful face. However, when you have killer curls like you, what was she thinking chopping them off! I love the Audrey Tatou cut that Carla has picked.

I feel for you. I remember when I was at university I had lots of fun with my hairstylist who was very adventurous, bold and edgy. He would love to try out all sorts of dos on my long hair. When it came to job interviews for my first professional job, I asked Paul to do something a bit conservative (so no wild colour and a shorter length). I kid you not, he dyed my hair dark mousy blonde and cut it into a Lego helmet head with a very short fringe - the perfect look for an Accountant! There was no styling that could improve this severe cut which just did not suit me at all. I was with DH back then and he still likes to remind me of the 'Lego Head Disaster' whenever I complain of having a bad hair day.

I am sorry that you need a new stylist too, but thoroughly agree with your reasons to change.

Your new ‘do is cute, but I completely understand if it’s not what you wanted. I’ve learned that my hair looks quite different if I blow dry with cold air vs heat vs let it air dry.

My hair is a completely different texture; I went on Amazon to find the strongest possible product for extra coarse Japanese hair with photos or illustrations of cute J-pop or K-pop boys. I guess I would seek out others with similar hair texture to find out what they use — which is what you’re doing! But I am also wondering if the humidity level where you live would also affect the effectiveness of a particular product.

I think it is stunning. It really goes well with the colour. Its very chic. If you wanted it longer, I agree that the Audrey Tatou style would also suit you.

Oh whoa! That’s short! It looks great on you tho - you pull it off. I’m so bad with hair ideas... I can’t begin to guess what your hair can and cannot do, but I like Runcarla’s Audrey Tatou thoughts.

I am sure you are disappointed that the haircut is not as per the picture, but in my opinion it is a great haircut. It takes a while to get used to the shorter style. I really like the picture in the green tunic, it suits you very well!

YLF Shevia - with or without the hat! We can see your lovely face much clearer now, without the long fringe to hide behind I remember when I had mine cut short, that was what I had to get used to the most.

Well, you sure can pull off a short haircut. I know nothing about having good hair, having given up years ago, but I think with a bit more length at the front, and a new hairdresser, you’ll be right. Love the Missoni (teal!) and the hat. You look fab, as always.

OMG Shevia---you have full rights to be angry at your hairdresser not giving you a cut you wanted (and not telling you she's not vaccinated) BUT you look gorgeous in your new Audrey Tautou pixie!!! REALLY GORGEOUS!!! You waves and color if really all natural (?) gives it a marvelous texture and detaches it from an average pixie beside that you have the face, the eyes, the contrast, the smile, the kindness glowing through-NO NEED to hide in a hat-I wouldn't even comment if thzis wans't my true own opinion,---so please believe me(us-)!!! At least, don't regret! Put on a lipstik (under the mask, too!:-)) and have fun till grows to what you originally wanted....which I am sure will also be glorious, of course...but stil,l pls. keep yourself confident as YLF in this one, too!:-))

I agree with everyone, the cut looks really cute on you. I do understand how an unexpected cut can make you feel bad though, it's happened to me several times! And with super short there's no alternative to just waiting for it to grow. I also love Karla's inspo pics, and could totally see you in them. For styling it now, maybe some gels that would give it some lift at the crown? I like it as it is but that might give you more fullness and feel like more hair

I think you're one of those lucky people who can wear any style. You're kind of giving me Juliette Binoche with your new 'do. I like her hair in this photo.

Ok, I was expecting disaster when I read your description, but I have to say this looks pretty darn amazing on you — and I am not even the biggest fan of super short pixie cuts. But you have gorgeous cheekbones and facial structure and such a wonderful smile and lovely skin, that it totally works on you (I have none of those things, which is why I continue to prefer hiding behind a lot of hair!).

However, I totally understand how you feel, and that is the most important thing. I think the suggestions that have been made for a texturizing product will help as you grow it out. And most importantly, I’m sorry you had that realization about your stylist and need to find a new one. That’s so disappointing. I’m going to call tomorrow to make my hair appointment for mid-May, when I will be officially fully vaccinated. I’m confident my stylist is keeping his salon safe. It will be interesting to hear his reaction to my head of grey hair and my sketchy DIY job of giving myself a semi shag cut. LOL

Shevia — this is very close to my cut. I suggest you pull the bangs down in front instead of sweeping them to the side. Use product to make them look “piecey.”

The missoni top is calming and fun at the same time. I’m having to find another physical therapist for the same reasons, she is not vaccinated, is no longer using a mask... sigh

I have to look for a new hairdresser, too. Mine was very good, but quit the salon to take a job elsewhere, & her replacement (who cut my hair last time) disclosed to me that she’s been going without a mask to boost her immunity, so I’m looking for someone else. My hair is in desperate need of a cut, & I hope to schedule an appointment soon, with someone who doesn’t throw caution to the wind.

It's beautiful on you, but you are 1000% justified in finding a new stylist! I was very relieved when my new stylist let only one person in at a time (her salon is her apartment) and mentioned being vaccinated. You never know who will turn out to refuse--my much-younger cousin, who is very smart otherwise, for instance.

I hope you can find a way to get used to this while it grows out!

Being mindful of toxic positivity (thank you Synne for introducing me to that concept) , I totally understand that feeling of helplessness when a haircut goes awry. Especially when hair is a big part of your look, as I know it is for you.

That said - can I offer up that this haircut shows you in a different light - and is SO youthful and pretty. A crisper look, for sure, but man is it flattering in the photos!
