Thanks all for your creative suggestions, I obviously have to carve out a couple of hours in my day for some serious experimenting before any final decisions. I don't have a lot of items from your suggestions though, but some I cam play with.
Adelfa :: thank you for not shying away from being a spanner That's what this thread is all about for me. I think I know exactly how you feel/felt about your outfit and I think you are spot on with why I struggle with this shirt. It is not as crisp or as bold as the clothes I enjoy wearing the most.
This is even more obvious to me when I compare this chambray to denim shirt I used to have (but passed on as it was a bit narrow across the shoulders) - the structure and texture, even the dark colour of denim is much more me than the relaxed chambray. I am aware of this, yet I cannot ignore the feeling I am also missing out to see something with the shirt I currently have.
In any case, I'll get on with styling experiments as per suggestions and pick some outfits to wear outside. I find that a few hours of wearing something IRL gives the best opportunity to fine tune with what I really like about something and identify it's actual potential. If I return home full of ideas how to style it the next time, or even determined that what I wore is the formula well worth repeating, the item gets demoted or passed on.
