CHALLENGE: The Closet Edit

I really need to just do this too. I've been wearing a handful of things that fit and letting the rest just sit. The thought of letting some of my old wardrobe friends go makes me sad. We might "fit" again--lol!

ETA that i did get rid of a few shopping bags of no longer comfortable shoes and clothes that I decided I would never wear again. Baby steps, I suppose!

This is great timing, with the seasons changing. I don’t need a major edit- moving was a great motivator to clear out the closet- but there are probably 4-5 pieces that I should let go.

I need to edit my closet. I did recently pass on 5 pairs of transitional shoes so that was a start. Unfortunately some of the things that should go (and already did) were bought this year, so i feel bad about wasted money.

This is a great challenge, Angie! I did a major edit in August and it was indeed very satisfying. I will follow everybody from the sidelines, and who knows, maybe some more edit will happen.

Kathie, good job. Moving is the BEST motivator for editing your life.

Suntiger, don't worry. Learn from the experience. I just passed on red lace pants in perfect condition that I had for six months. I didn't know the silhouette would aggravate my crotch point until I put them through their paces. Now I know. Onward

Great idea! I’ve edited a handful of things out already, as I did the first part of my seasonal wardrobe turnover last weekend. (Shoulder season can be long here, so I won’t be taking out all the warm clothes for a while.) I still have them all in a pile; I’m going away this weekend but can post about them next week.

Perfect timing! I'm going to a clothing exchange tonight at a friend's house and I already did a quick edit to have some items to trade. I'll take some pictures of those and then do a more thorough edit in the next couple weeks.

I went through my tees yesterday. I have a stack for the homeless shelter. I went through my sandals before that, culling three pairs . The Naots were worn out, and the Steve Madden shooties have three inch heels. The Naots went into the trash, and the shooties are going to the thrift store.

Aww, man, I really need to do this but October is bonkers crazy this year, so not sure I’ll get it done in time for this challenge! But I will get it done before the new year, lol. (We are moving sometime in Jan most likely so that’s my hard deadline.)

Thanks for pulling all those links together Angie. I'm going to read, and get inspired. I need to do an edit, but the idea of editing my rather (very) large wardrobe all at once is frankly psychologically overwhelming to me. Plus I don't have space, or time, to try and do it all at once. But I'm definitely going to follow along, and hopefully find some bite sized chunks that I can deal with.

I’m traveling most of the month but really want play. Currently in NYC - so fashionable it is inspiring! Maybe I can do bits and pieces as I’m home. I have done a little here and there in the past few month and it really is cathartic.

I have a nutty work schedule this month, and am not sure I can get a thorough edit done, and right now the idea is a bit overwhelming. I hate the mess it creates. That said, I'll be doing an informal edit as I pull out all of my fall/winter stuff over the next week or so.

I'm in. Kinda already started. I'm restless with my current wardrobe, but am not sure where I want to go with it. I think I want 1-2 tight capsules, so culling and organizing will help those come to fruition, highlighting any holes I have just in time for my early Nov trip to the US. Lisa p, mess? The edit creates an organized space both in your home and in your head! Do what you can and it will make a difference. I like your capsule idea. A start is a start no matter how small. We'd edit it all at once if we were working together - and be exhausted afterwards! It's a workout.

Angie, how I would LOVE to spend a day editing with you!

And I'm with Lisa on the mess... clothes spread EVERYWHERE, all needing to be refolded or hung... ugh. That is, if you've tried things on, which I assume most people do!
Sure, the result may be fresh and clean, but not the process.

I'll be happy just to get my fall clothes out and summer ones put away, this weekend.

Good timing! Completed the annual edit of DH's clothing on Monday (see below) and have been procrastinating about doing my own. I haven't added much after jetisoning most of my work capsule and I'm afraid to confront the fact that some of my favourites need to go (worn out). Furthermore, I feel on the cusp of a style persona change but have not been able to hone in on the direction sufficient to articulate it in words!

One tip I have for editing is using Finds here. I have created a collection of items I'm on the fence about, which allows me to look at them all in once place and keep track of them. Then I can pick from those items when dressing, so I can evaluate whether I think each one works or not. At the end of the season, if I haven't been able to successfully wear the item, then I know it's probably time to cull it.

That's for ongoing editing, though. I do my major edits when I'm doing my seasonal wardrobe changeovers, since I have to keep non-seasonal items in storage. I check each item for fit, especially, at those times, as well as whether it's looking worn, etc.
