Can't load photos from android smartphone

Hi Greg,
Since the new site was loaded I haven't been able to upload photos from my phone. I get the message:"Failed to open selected file"

As a side issue, when I go the long way to post a pic - ie email to myself, edit it (which always involves having to rotate it) and then upload it, it always appears sideways despite the rotation. Do you have any suggestions for this

Hi Anne,

This aspect of the system didn't (intentionally) change with the new design, so there must be a bug somewhere. Is this definitely something that changed when we launched the new design on Monday, or is it possible that the problem started before that?

Also, have you updated the Android OS recently?

Regarding the rotation... There is a little piece of info inside the photo that specified the rotation, and I honor this when uploading the file. I think what might be happening is that piece of info is stripped from the file when you send it via email. Can you email me one of those pictures directly from your phone? You can use bugs [at] youlookfab.com.

I can't say for absolutely certain that the problem related to the upgrade, as I don't load photos all that often.

Thanks Anne. That timing does seem connected to the redesign launch. I wonder if I can ask you to do a couple of things to help me to investigate the problem.

First, can you explain exactly where you see that error message? Also, is that verbatim what the message says?

Second, can you please try again and let me know exactly what time you do so? That will help me to track down the error messages in our log files.

I just checked our log files that record any problems on the server, and I can't see the problem there. The other thing is that none of our YLF code generates that particular error message.

I did a quick search for that error message on Google and it does seem to be quite a common problem on Android phones. But the question is why would it suddenly become a problem for you when you could previously upload photos successfully.

Did you by any chance update the OS on your phone recently?

Also, have you tried to upload photos to another website?

I haven't changed my OS, but my kids do muck around on the phone....
I can upload to facebook.

The problem was thus: When I clicked on "add a photo" it was going straight into "camera" - and then not loading.
What I usually did, prior to then, and I have now fixed to do again, is to press documents, then gallery and then go to the photos and upload.

I don't know why it didn't load from "camera" and does from "gallery" but it works!

Anne, I've been meaning to ask whether you are still having problems with rotation. I tried the photo you sent, but it seems that the incorrect rotation is built into that file before YLF even uploads it. For example, the photo looks incorrect in my email program.

Sorry I haven't replied until now - I haven't been around much and missed this for a bit. Here is another try with a photo - just a quick one I just took. I edited and saved it in MS Office.

The second photo was a try using carousel, downloading and saving then uploading.
