Can cropped/shrunken denim jackets be worn with pants at all?

I bought the Angie-recommended cropped denim jacket at AE last month - tags are still on. It looks nice with certain dresses, but my question is whether this style of jacket can ever be worn with pants.

What do you think?

Potential outfit is something like GAP Really Skinny black pants, flat shoes or ankle boots, crisp button-down shirt (*untucked* since I never tuck anything into those skinny pants) with the shrunken jacket? I'd wear it with a casual scarf worn in Angie's "messy" incarnatation (just loosely looped around the neck). Or would this look dumb? I guess I'm just not used to the longer top/shorter jacket idea just yet.

In any case - do any of you wear your cropped denim jackets with pants, shorts (non-denim clams) at all? Is it ok to wear a longer top untucked with a cropped/shrunken jacket? Or is it better to save the cropped jacket for dresses and "tucked only" tops?

I think it really depends on the person, the person's body type, and the image she is trying to convey.

I know Rae wears cropped jackets with longer tops/ tunics. And so does Una. And Sveta sometimes does it, too. I think in all cases it is a question of getting the proportions right for the person.

I find my own eye is a bit untrained to this look, and also, for myself personally, due to proportional issues, I have a bit of trouble making it work. For me, it doesn't work with a high contrast between top and bottom or either of those and the jacket. But your mileage may vary.

i usually wear short jackets with skinnies. i leave the blouse /shirt / sweater untucked, but slim.

Thanks Suz - I think this is why I'm 'on the fence' about the jacket ...I do love it, just that I don't wear dresses as often as my imaginary life would have me believe.

I wear cropped/short jackets with longer untucked tops a lot. I actually like it because the crop of the jacket can help show/define my waist, even if the shirt has a little volume. I often leave jackets open.

eta: yay - glad you chimed in Janet - thank you! Good to know that you think a button down shirt worn untucked with skinny pants, flats and the cropped jacket is workable - I will get more wear out of the jacket if this is the case.

I only wear mine with pants. Oh, and the B44 dress.

I wear shorter/cropped jackets (denim and my new moto and a bomber type olive twill jacket I've had for years) with pants and longer tops all the time. I never even thought about it, honestly. It feels natural to me. Cropped jackets usually hit at or around my natural waist, so maybe that's why it feels natural to me.
Unless maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean--you mean an outfit like this, right?

I wore an incarnation of that outfit on the weekend with a button-down shirt: raspberry jeans, motorcycle boots, chambray button-down, waxed denim cropped moto worn open.

I think I'm just not used to the idea of seeing a cropped jacket with a longer top on me. Thing is? I don't always love tucking, especially when it involves skinny pants.

I'm leaning toward keeping the jacket - because I do love it - it's just that I realized that I don't wear dresses as often as I think I do. Well, maybe that will change later in the fall/winter.

vc, i hate tucking too...so we have that in common! the untucked tunic topped with a crop jacket is my go to formula. as a bonus, it's effective as a buffet outfit.

I pretty much *never* tuck. I think it looks weird on me. Perhaps my eye just hasn't adjusted.

Here's a cropped leather jacket look (it's a K/R but these are the proportions I usually wear). I don't wear denim jackets but I think the same rules apply.

Thank you all so much - I will be brave and just cut the tags off. It's a shorter/cropped denim jacket, and it looks best with dresses, but like I said - I'm not wearing dresses all that often lately, and it would be useful to have this jacket work for other, more casual outfits.

This will be my first denim jacket in years and years though...next up? A leather jacket

Forget all these elegant trench coats (I have three). I am determined to feel as good in 'casual' as I do when wearing slightly dressier clothing This has been a real sore point for me over the past year or so - 'casual' has been badly neglected. I've always thought of casual as being some ancient old t-shirt and cut-off shorts because I was cleaning or painting the place. Hate to admit that, but it's true.

Thanks again everyone - it's just this $30-something jacket (bought on sale, and really no big deal price-wise), and yet, it feels as 'odd' to me as my first couple of pairs of Converse shoes. Don't laugh! I am much more comfortable in dress pants, pencil skirts, nice blouses, blazers and the like. I like (and feel best in) slightly dressier clothing, even in casual situations.

So much drama (likely because this is beyond my comfort zone) - and yet, the jacket was really inexpensive, I got it for 40% off during Labor Day weekend sales, so even if it's only there as an add-on for certain dresses, it will be ok. Hmm...I must be getting a wee bit picky? That's a good thing though, isn't it?

In the meantime - I will go ahead and wear it with pants. If anyone laughs, I can just take the thing off, and drape it artfully over my cross-body bag, right?

I think the cropped jacket is great to make legs look longer & over an untucked top with skinnies you get to hide your tummy. You said your secondary bodytype is apple so that might be a good thing. I need to hide my tummy in skinnies, in any jeans really, so I like a longer top but the cropped jacket helps with leg lengthening. If I were going to buy more denim jackets I guess I would get a longer one, like high hip length but I don't see the need as yet.

Absolutely, and I'm glad you cut the tags since you like the jacket Cropped denim jackets are amazingly versatile. It does help if you have a longer torso because then you can make it look very intentional, but I don't think that's necessarily a requirement. I have a high-hip length denim jacket and a properly cheeky cropped denim jacket... and the cropped one gets worn ALL the time; that high-hip jacket is rarely worn, even though I primarily wear pants and it's the right length for pants. Go figure.

Your example outfit sounds like it would work wonderfully! And by coincidence, I'm wearing something awfully similar today. I assume your black pants aren't lightly drop-crotched like these skinnies, heh, so your longer top should work even better proportion-wise.
