Battle of the Black Jeans: Paige Hoxton vs NYDJ skinny high waist

Both these jeans are high waisted and comfortable. (The NYDJs are an inch or so higher.). The fabrics are about the same with the Hoxtons having more rayon and less cotton. Both are a tad long which is normal for me.
The NYDJs are hemmed, the Hoxtons released hem and angled. A fun detail but not as noticeable since they are a tiny bit too long. Will they shrink a bit is a question yet.
Which would you keep? I don't need both. I have them pictured with the tee and flats I was wearing today. I lightened the photos to try to show detail. A size smaller Hoxon pair should still be on the way but these feel right.
1-4: Paige Hoxtons
5-10: NYDJ Ami skinny leggings. The last couple of photos show hem turned up an inch or so. Which ones do you like best or should I keep looking?

It's always hard to tell with photographs of black. It seems like they both fit well, but I do like the released hem detail on you. It's fun mixed up with your elegant style.

ETA: Studying the photos, it seems the Hoxtons may fit better in the thigh area, FWIW.

Before looking at the pictures, by reading your description, I was ready to say the NYDJ's. After looking at the pictures, although both look great on you, I would say keep the Paige Hoxtons. The released hem detail adds a little bit of interest that goes well with your classic + trendy style I love so much. Speaking of which, I love your t-shirt.

Thank you for you quick responses. I hope to make returns tomorrow of the XS olive coat and the too big olive jeans, and the black jeans I'm not keeping. Do you think the detail on the Hoxtons will date them in a year?

Dianna, this is one of a very small number of graphic tees I have. It's a Fender guitar shirt thrifted a few years ago.

Sorry Joy I will be a spanner in the works. I don't like the released hem detail. Otherwise they fit well. I like the NYDJ with the hem turned up. In an ideal world I would keep the top half of the Paige and the bottom half of the NYDJ. Not possible!

I have those Hoxton jeans, and I am also wondering if the hem will limit how long I can wear them for. I figure at least two years should be okay trend-wise, but a quality jeans should last longer than that. I haven't played with them much yet because of the heat. If we have a few cool weeks I will suss out my feelings about them. On the other hand for me, I have nearly zero jeans that fit, so given how happy I was with the fit on those and my limited time for shopping, I will probably keep mine. I think it ultimately depends on how happy they make you feel.

jenniNZ, I actually like how the NYDJ fit at the top better. They come up a bit higher and will not require a belt to stay up. I feel like the Hoxtons will need a belt, especially to showcase the hem detail.
Scarlet, I hope to keep the jeans in rotation more than 2 years and also need to try the Hoxtons with booties to see how the hem looks. I feel more trendy in them and suppose they could be shortened if the released hem looks dated. It is still too warm to get long jeans into regular rotation except maybe early morning or in the evening. I am surprised that the NYDJs feel like premium denim.
The back pockets on the NYDJs set a bit higher than the Hoxtons, but with the black on black, it is hard to see a difference.
Please keep your thoughts coming.

It's hard to see the fit details except for the hems. I too wonder if the Hoxton hems will date quickly. (I was considering them myself since I'd like a black pair of jeans.) I agree you could simply cut them and hem them if they are no longer on trend next year. Definitely try them with booties. If you will wear them mostly with black booties, I guess the hem detail will be lost.

I like them both. The advantage of the Hoxtons being a little long is that you can turn them up if they go off trend.
I also got the Hoxtons and although I like them they feel a bit more like jeggings than like jeans. I am still waiting for cold windy weather to see if the wind goes through, if it does I will return them. Of course that is probably not an issue where you live.
I agree that the Hoxtons look trendier and more fun. Your comment about the NYDJs being like premium denim got me curious to try them as well...
I think you may need to sit through a few TV shows with each of the jeans to see if they stretch and to see their comfort level before you finalize your decision. FWIW, my Hoxtons do not seem to stretch but I have not worn them for more than watching a TV show. Also the smaller size of the Hoxtons may fit you better in the back? It would be good for you to try both sizes side by side so that you can really compare how they fit.

If you keep the Hoxtons, after washing, could you re-creat the hem detail at the ankle with scissors and a seam ripper, if they don't shrink?. I think it gets lost at the current length. THe turned under hem on the NYDJ looks good.

I have not yet purchased the frayed/released trend, even though I like it a lot. I feel like in a year it wil look very 2016. Mostly because I am seeing it everywhere, So I am more likely to try it in an inexpensive pair.

You look great in both, so which one makes you feel more fab?

I'm biased toward the Paige Hoxton, since I got them as well. I like the hem detail, although I'm going to have to shorten mine, so I'll lose the "released" part of it. I think yours might need to be shortened as well. (Haven't washed them yet, so I don't know if they shrink.)
All of that said, once you mentioned that the NYDJ will stay up without a belt, I would vote for those. That's one reason I got the Paige jeans; they will stay up on me without a belt, and there are times when I want to wear a tunic with black jeans. (Yes, I've still not got around to buying one of those invisible belts, despite the obvious utility one would hold for me.)
I can't really compare the fit from your photos, though I do think I can see that the NYDJ come up higher, which to me would be a bonus.
The NYDJ look sleeker in a way, almost like pants with jean pockets, whereas the Paige look more like jeans.

It's interesting about the "premium" denim. In NZ we don't really have such a thing. We started getting NYDJ imported here a few years back, I have noticed ads in the fashion magazines for maybe 5 years. They were quite heavily written about as a step up from what we had had, which was essentially Levis and mainly Aussie brands like Just Jeans. Plus one reasonable NZ brand made in China, Macjays, and ultra cheap stuff from like The Warehouse, which is sort of our Walmart or Target equivalent.
I have been interested to read about "premium denim" on YLF. What is the difference, exactly? And I have been pretty happy with the quality of my NYDJ bought at outlet in 2015 cheaper than the crazy prices we are asked to pay for them when new in to the boutiques. They are not as comfy though as the 2 newer pairs I have bought since, which have elasticated waists- one Macjays and one a plus size brand called K and K.

Aquamarine, I will definitely try the Hoxtons with booties. I also have tall black riding boots but tucking would definitely hide the leg detail.

Joyce, I know what you mean about cold wind going though things. That factor always made sweater coats or knit jackets rather useless out of doors. I use silk long underwear to help stay warm. I have been wearing both jeans today around the house and watching TV. Both relaxed some but did not get baggy. Maybe the smaller sized Hoxtons will be perfect.

Karen, I have been trying the released hem trend with cheap jeans and DYI. I have enjoyed them but may feel differently if I see them everywhere. I'm not sure yet which feels more fab.

Firecracker, I was nodding alone as I read your words. Yes the Hoxtons should be shortened unless I can get them to stay up closer to my waist with a belt. Eventhenthey will be longer than ideal.

JenniNZ, premium denim has a wonderful softness and smoothness to it that feels luxurious. Kuts are a step up from those brands. Some of my Kut jeans feel and look more premium than others. I try to stay away from elastisized waists as it is too easy to gain a size or more without even realizing it. A pair or two are ok but all the time can be a disaster.

I like the Hoxtons and agree with those who mentioned the possibilty of altering the hem later if you get tired of the look.

I love the Paige Hoxtons on you - they look fantastic, and more modern than the NYDJ's. Brilliant with the t-shirt and your shoes, this is a great ensemble.

I also prefer the Paige Hoxtons (I'm biased because I'm now wishing I had gotten those during the sale too).

I'm wondering about DIYing some hems like that on a pair of jeans I already own, but I need a closeup photo of those hems!

Thanks , Janet. Here are some close up shots. Let me know if you want different ones. The back hem is simply released. The front is released and cut at an angle from one side seam to about 1.25 inches before the other side seam, then straight down.

Oh, cool, Joy! Thank you for sharing those photos -- really helpful. I could probably do a DIY with a similar treatment. I have two existing pairs of black skinnies/straights. I wonder how this would look on a straighter (not skinny) leg, hmmmm....

I like the fit and look of the Hoxtons. I like mixing modern denim with classic pieces and think these would be great. You could shorten them with a hem, or try to trim them in line with the way they are already cut. I like the angled cut and released hem.

Looking at your close up pics, it seems that they sewed across the jeans hem above the released area with a single row, maybe to keep them from fraying too much? (almost like a serge row) My Frame Le Nouveau jeans are like that all around the vertical cut and also the released hem at the bottom. I'm not sure why? Someone who sews may be able to weigh in here.....

Janet, I am sure that you could do this. The angle may need to be more dramatic on straights because the leg pulls the opening wider, if that makes sense.
Staysfit, I checked and what looks like a line of stitching in the photos is not. It is tiny dents in the fabric from where the pants were once hemmed. (they were hemmed normally first, then released with thread removed, then cut and , I suppose, frayed just enough to show. The denim fabric weave is pretty tight and smooth. The fabric is 54% rayon, 23% cotton, 23% polyester, and 1% spandex.

I vote for the Hoxtons but they both look good. I think being able to stay up without a belt is useful, even though I am happy to wear a belt there are times when it is nice not to need to.

Hi Joy --

I'm voting for the Hoxtons for a couple of reasons.

One, in this set of photos they definitely look sleeker on you.

Two, I think the hem detail is fun and as you said you can alter if you tire of it.

Three, I have some regular-hem black Hoxtons (can't swear to fabric etc as they're 1.5 years old) and they've held up well to frequent wear -- little bagging even with repeated wears before wash, black still deep with cold-water washing etc.

Also, purely subjective four -- I have a friend about your shape and age and whenever she tries on NYDJ vs premium the latter always looks so much more elegant and hip on her. I think as mentioned above it's the cut of the hip/thigh zone.

There is a visible difference in the fit, I think there is more room in the hip and leg in the NYDJ? Which in theory means they should work for someone built more like me, but I don't like their jeans on me AT ALL. The rise is too high and the overall effect is decidedly not cool (on me! they look fine on others!).
