10.14 - plaids, and , is this odd?

This is my new favourite dress - and it is only $39. Yes, you read that right. Joe Fresh. Sometimes these pieces are utter garbage and do not fit, and sometimes they are downright perfect. Quite pleased with myself if you can't tell This plaid coat owes me nothing - I've had it for years, and it's one of my all-time favourites. I like the plaid mixing here, and the pendant (reason for odd close-up of my chest) ties into the angularity of the patterns. Here's where I took a leap and am not sure: black tights and boots would have been too easy, and I really wanted to wear my new brownish suede boots, AND, happened to have the perfect match in tights - so.....off I went. Is this too bizarre? Full disclosure - I like it, but am totally open to hearing if I'm off base here with too much going on. I never claim to know what I'm doing with colour mixing. There is brown leather trim on the coat, and my bag is brown and black . Curious what you think!

I think it's great. The brown ties in with the coat so you're all good - plaid is so useful like that.

I really like your coat. Over on abc's post looking for a coat with a big collar, I questioned whether I could like or tolerate or whatever a big collar and here I like your coat. Interesting..

Ha, I didn't notice the tights/boots!
Now that I think about it, I think the brown looks better than black or grey. I'm wondering if it's because it's mimicking bare legs in a sort of not-there way...not sure if that makes any sense.

I happen to like brown and gray, it's part of my aspirational tree-bark or Ent palette, and of course the coat has multiple colors. I think you could also match tights to dress and then have brown boots, as I like brown boots + gray tights a lot, especially sweater or ribbed tights. So I think you go with the best matches, here you lucked into the matching browns.

LOVE with the brown, much richer and visually interesting than black (though of course that would work well, too). Charcoal tights with black boots could be another good option for an equally softening effect. Plaid mix is right up my alley! Fab dress, fab coat, and way to rock those higher shaft ankle boots.

The brown tights and shoes were a stroke of brilliance with the coat/bag trim. I'm a big fan of black/brown together, though, so ymmv.

Love the brown and gray together. Very rich looking. Those boots are TDF. The plaids are so matchy matchy. It is great. Perfection. Joe Fresh has some great stuff sometimes. And right there when you are grocery shopping.

Wow, what a fantastic outfit!! I absolutely love it. I think the brown works brilliantly. It ties in with the coat, yes, but it also has a similar value to the charcoal dress. Love love love the coat!!

I also love the brown tights and boots with the charcoal plaid. Don't know why, but it looks splendid to me, and better than black would. This whole outfit is fantastic; I really like the mixed plaids and your choice of necklace.

Thanks all for the kind comments - and I'm glad that brown and grey and black is a good thing. I really liked it too. THE most comfortable dress to wear. It has a very slight bit of stretch - if I didn't know better I'd have thought it was an expensive stretch wool. It looks like crap on the hanger so be warned, and takes a good go with a steam iron when you get it home. I'm wearing a 6. It's a very straight-up-and-down cut - so Vivian , you'll be a 2, I would guess.

Re: the find - it isn't even on the Canadian website. At least I sure couldn't find it there. They have the worst website though...

Yes! My plaid Kuts (well, the second pair) have those colors and navy as well - a great mashup! Also I think this is very modern and the kind of mix that looks deliberately unstudied and cool.

So let me pick your talented brain....why did you shop a Joe Fresh in the first place and try on what you said is an ugly dress on the hanger that is wrinkled? What goes through your mind? Did you have that coat and boots in mind? Were you looking for a dress? Did you have an event you were shopping for?
I don't have the Knack so I don't get it. Please enlighten!

Oh dear - Sarah, that's funny Mechanical aptitude? No. Social ineptitude? Occasionally The Knack? Ok!

Well, to be honest, I saw a picture of it in a magazine ad - you know, one of those 5 pieces you must have for fall things. Superstore (where Joe Fresh is sold here) is where I do a fair bit of grocery shopping so - next time I was there, I found it, picked it up, but thought it looked gross, and walked away. Kept thinking about it,because I like the little faux leather band at the waist and the colour of the plaid. Looked at it a week later - and interestingly, it didn't look like they had sold a single one - held it up and decided to take it home anyways and see what it looked like. The minute I slid it on I knew it was right. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't This grocery store is about a minute and half from my house, so I'm there all the time anyways. I always look but rarely , if ever, buy any of the clothes. The quality of the construction on this dress is really good though, and the fabric is nice and substantial. Good square shoulders, big long zipper in back, cute faux leather insert, and well fitting sleeves. These things make a difference to me. Sorry, now I'm all wound up I get excited talking about these things .

Thanks for the explanation. It does help it if clothing is near a grocery store - although I probably would starve! Still - you had an instinct that led you to try it out. That's what I am trying to "learn"....as if that's possible ...but I'm hoping through osmosis.
