Adjusting My Outfit to Suit the Audience

To a large extent we dress for ourselves and our own needs. Our style reflects our aesthetic preferences and our lifestyle, resulting in a look that’s all about us. But to some degree we also tailor our outfits to suit the audience.

For example, I find that I adjust my outfit to suit the dress code of each individual client. When I’m shopping for career wear with an executive, I’ll wear a Theory suit or pull out my most pristine professional separates. When I’m shopping with a client who leads a very casual lifestyle, I might wear faded boyfriend jeans with a pullover, moto jacket and booties. I’ll wear business casual attire when shopping with a business casual client. And a skirt or a dress when I’m with a client who loves frocks.

I think my clients will relate to me more easily when I’m wearing something along the lines of the clothes we’re shopping for. I might put off one of my casual clients if I wore a suit on our shopping day. And I would not make a professional impression if I dressed up jeans for a business formal shopping session.

I sometimes also take into account my client’s colour preferences or style goals. Although I love wearing happy bright colours, I will stick to a neutral outfit if I’m shopping with a client who has an aversion to brights. Or, if I know my client wants to add blush pink and white to her wardrobe, I might wear an outfit incorporating these shades as an example. Just recently I went shopping with a client who enjoys wearing white as much as I do. So I wore white-out that day, which she appreciated, and consequently we put together a similar look for her.

I hope that these choices make my clients feel more at ease, but they also make me feel more at ease.

I have focused on the clothes I wear in my professional setting, but the same applies in other situations. Of course, I sometimes make choices based on what Greg likes. And I will consider what other people like too, even when I’m deciding what to wear to a very casual event. I don’t do this out of a sense of obligation. I enjoy it. For me, it is part of the fun.

But as much as other people factor into my outfit decisions, I never wear something that doesn’t feel authentically me. All of that influence is confined to the contents of my wardrobe. I’m not changing my style for other people. I’m changing my outfit. While I do dress with other people in mind, I never shop with other people in mind. Well, except perhaps for Greg.

How about you? To what extent do other people influence your outfits, and why?

Weekly Roundup: Spring Sweaters

I’ll be doing lots of knitwear roundups as a nod to the year-round bumper knitwear trend. Pullovers, in all sorts of fabrics, lengths, colours, silhouettes and patterns are the item to wear with bottoms. As the weather warms up, you’re after lighter weights in cotton, linen and silk blends.

Some of the styles incorporate woven fabric inserts, which provide an arty drape and feminine touch to the style. I’m also loving the versions with open slit backs.

It’s nice to see a few structured styles in the mix. I’m all for fluid and oversized fits, but I am an even bigger fan of silhouette variety so that there is something for everyone.

Casual and Trendy in Cold Alaska

When Alicia Even moved from Texas to Alaska she started her blog, The Wild Muse, to stay sartorially inspired while learning to dress for a much colder climate. Our blogger is a casual trendy fashionista with both a rough around the edges and polished side to her style. Alicia also loves a bold lip, and she is a jeans gal through and through. That’s why we decided to turn her feature into a 100% denim issue.

“I’m a Texas native, and a few years ago I moved to Alaska. In Texas it’s hot 9 months out of the year, and in Alaska it’s cold 9 months out of the year. I moved from one extreme to another, so everything changed. I went from wearing shorts and sandals to having to wear multiple layers to keep warm. It was all very new to me, and to be perfectly honest I felt a bit lost. As cliché as it sounds, I’ve always had a passion for fashion, and there was very little of it here. Needless to say I was very discouraged at first. That’s when I started thinking about starting a blog. I needed a creative outlet. I wanted to feel inspired again, and blogging was the answer for me. This was my first winter blogging, and even though it was very challenging at times, I felt like it’s just what I needed to keep me motivated. It can be hard to look stylish while dressing for cold weather, but I wanted to show my readers that it’s not impossible. You don’t need to sacrifice fashion simply because the temperature drops. With a bit more thought and effort it is possible to look stylish and be warm during the winter months.”

I adore this sporty casual look for its modern tomboy intregrity. My favourite look! The sweater with the extra large chevron print is undoubtedly the focal point of the outfit. A utility jacket is a great casual alternative for the ubiquitous denim jacket, I really like how the olive adds some urban toughness to the relaxed feel of the sneakers and skinnies. The crisp white of the button-down is repeated in the low-top sneakers, which lightens up the outfit. Notice how they have a thin black and red stripe that echo the colours in the sweater? The leopard spot foldover clutch adds an unexpected dressy touch, while Alicia’s dark berry lip works perfectly with the strong, saturated colour palette.

There’s nothing like sporting pastels to bring a splash of Spring to a cold Winter’s day. The pale pinks with the denim feel refreshing, while the fluffy texture of the coat and sweater create outfit depth. I love how the cosiness and soft colours on top contrast against the tougher looking skinnies and cage pumps (their blush colour also soften things up). The oversized fit of the round-shouldered cocoon coat is fashion forward without being overwhelming. This is achieved by adding structure back into the outfit. Here the skinny jeans and contour-skimming V-neck sweater that exposes some skin do the trick, as does the tailored footwear. The bright red quilted Chanel-esque crossbody provides a great accent colour, so does Alicia’s bright red lipstick.

I’m filing this under advanced pattern mixing. Not because different patterns are involved, after all there’s three plaids in this outfit. But because all three are large scale, and equally “dominant” — as opposed to one dominant and one supporting pattern. Add in the statement patchwork jeans, and you have an eye-catching maximal look. Alicia has picked her colours well, and this helps tie everything together. The blues in the jeans match the colours in the shirt. Its tailored fit and shorter length provide structure and balance out the roomy fit of the long boyfriend cardigan and big scarf. The scarf is exactly the right size to add “controlled” bulk; the red really pops against all the blues. The black of the cardigan is repeated in the smart leather tote and ankle strap pumps that both bookend Alicia’s dark hair. The straps come up right to the rolled hems of the jeans, which elongates the leg line.

At first I thought Alicia was wearing denim shorts over leather leggings, then I realized these are mixed-media jeans. How delightfully rock ‘n’ roll. This eye-catching look is also the perfect example of Angie’s cropped sweater over a longer shirt formula. Alicia kept things streamlined by opting for a tailored regular length shirt and a somewhat more fluid fitting but not oversized sweater. The outfit has two cutting horizontal lines: the high contrast of the untucked white shirt and grey pullover, and the spot where the blue denim transitions to the black leather. I think it works great on our blogger. There’s also the above-the-knee wool coat bringing it all together. The grey bouclé repeats the colour up top, works nicely with the blue, black and white, and echoes the greys in the snakeskin print pumps. Alicia’s consistently put-together hair and makeup also play an important role. No matter what, they always add a polished element to everything she wears.

Alicia loves her destroyed denim. Here she girlies up the look by going with white jeans paired with delicate pastels. The nubby textured peach and white cardigan is such a fun casual topper. The colour works great with the deliberately blurry soft focus print on the graphic tee. The untucked T-shirt is fluid and forms a column of colour with the jeans. This creates a long lean line together with the longer length on the cardi and the high-heeled shoes. The two-toned pumps with see-through detailing add a fun matchy-matchy element to the look, as they pick up both the colours in the modern clutch and the blingy statement necklace. Our blogger is also sporting another one of her beloved M.A.C. lipsticks, neon pink this time, giving the pastels extra pep.

Alicia is a skinnies gal at heart, so these flares are a somewhat different look for her. I really like the softer, more minimal and elegant vibe. She sure is working the subtle volume on volume here. The bold striped top has a wide boat neck and oversized kimono sleeves. They are elbow length though, and the top hits her above the hip bone, which helps create structure. The dark wash jeans (perfect length!) are fitted through the hip and thigh and add further structure to the outfit. So do the refined pointy toe pumps, bare forearms and alluring splash of skin up top. The beautiful blue satchel, simple wire bangle bracelets and metallic oversized watch keep the look minimal and polished. The huge umbrella as a prop immediately put me in a good mood.

A Salute to Spring White-Out

I’ve been wearing a lot of white-out over the last year, across all four seasons, and loving it. Along with pointy toe footwear, knitwear, and fluid fits, it’s my favourite trend. It ignites a special feeling when I wear shades of white from head to toe. It looks crisp, bold, dressy and modern, and I feel powerful and in control. Plus the visual effect of wearing this much white is soft, bright and pretty, which appeals greatly to my style sensibilities.

I have been champing at the bit to wear the skirt and pullover that Greg gave me for my birthday day last year together in an outfit. It seems like a comfortable and fresh way to usher in a chilly Seattle Spring. The combination of  a skirt with hose, cozy pullover and topper is a good match for our weather at the moment.

Jumper

This is not a conventionally flattering outfit for several reasons. I’m wearing roomy fits both on the top and bottom. The coat is worn in an open unstructured manner. The high contrast booties add a cutting horizontal line. Plus, the booties are low heeled and round toed, which does little to elongate my leg line. High heeled pointy toe white booties would have instantly made this outfit look more proportionally flattering.

Coat Wide

But I do think that this outfit is just flattering enough. To my eye there is sufficient structure in the right places. First, the column of white enhances the vertical integrity of the outfit creating a pulled together look. The colour of the column is repeated in the footwear, which draws the eye up and down. The hem of the skirt is just above the knee, which elongates the lower leg. The pullover is cropped, which elongates the leg line from the waist down, and prevents it from overwhelming my frame. The welt of the pullover hints at a waistline, thereby reining in some of the volume. And although the coat is less structured when left open, the vertical line that is created down the centre front of the body is slimming because it provides more vertical integrity.

Ideally, I would have preferred the cream booties to fit more closely on my ankle. I have become increasingly intolerant of booties that gape too widely when worn with skirts and dresses. But it’s hard to find cream booties that are low heeled, comfortable, dressy and super tailored, so I’m going with these until I can find a more suitable pair.

Jumper Zip

I finished off the outfit with some splashes of colour to break up the white. Apple green eyewear, because those are the only specs I want to wear right now, and an aqua clutch as a nod to the pastel trend. Flesh toned hose are a great way to keep warm without looking like you’re actually wearing hosiery. No jewellery required other than my watch and wedding ring.

Wearing lots of white is the least practical aspect of my style. But I do seem to have a knack for charging around a rainy city in an outfit like this one without it getting visibly grubby. Maybe that’s my superpower.

Spring Fever: Fifteen Fab Finds

Spring Fever has hit Seattle and we are ready to refresh our wardrobes. Below are some tried and tested items that have been winners for my clients, and I’ve bought the occasional item too. Be sure to look through all the colour options.

  • Giove Leather Bootie: Super soft, made in Italy, and very comfortable. The textured leather is sublime, and the sole a great light colour. Fab pointy toe. Refined yet casual. A little distressed but still quite polished. Suited to orthotic inserts.
  • Giove Leather Bootie: Another style by the same brand. A little glitz on the elastic inserts for Team Magpie and a versatile shade of taupe-grey. Also super soft, made in Italy, and very comfortable. Works for a wider foot.
  • Frye Reina Bootie: A third casual bootie that’s quite refined. The angled vent in front is flattering on bare legs. The bootie is lightweight and also very comfy. Works for a wider foot.
  • Textural Stripe Tunic: The photo does not do the style justice. The cotton is delicate and gorgeously textured with an ultra fine self-colour stripe. It could be just the shirt you need to create avant-garde layers. It looked stunning when my client layered over a soft pink oversized high-low pullover.
  • Carter Flat: Pretty, ladylike and elongating as far as flats go. Comfortable, but runs half a size large.
  • Vince Camuto Cutout Leather Sandal: Fun caged sandal.
  • T Tahari Crystal Jacket: My client took my breath away in this number. It’s well made, and an excellent topper option for Spring. The insets are ink and the tweed is a mixture of white and light blue. Beautiful detailing and quite slimming despite its boxy cut.
  • Boden Silk Linen Sweater: A fab sweater to wear untucked over skirts. It’s very breezy and lightweight. Note that Boden’s smallest size is a US 2, which fits like a US zero, so size up.
  • Boden Mya Bag: The most crisp cross body bag in gold that I’ve seen. Well made and quite roomy.
  • Boden Mid Heel Wedge: I thought these peds were going to be dreadfully uncomfortable because the leather is hard. But they softened up a lot after an hour. A great little heel height and fashionable pointy toe. Will not work on a wider foot, or feet with bunions.
  • Boden Pencil: Gorgeous quality and fully lined. Very tailored but not overly tight. A US 2 fits like a US size zero so size up. A fun assortment of patterns.
  • Boden Richmond Blazer: The best cropped striped jacket I’ve seen all season. Beautifully made and very crisp. Runs small.
  • J. Brand 722 Love Story Jeans: I bought these flared jeans last week because I need a third denim silhouette to wear along with boyfriends and straight legs. They are dramatic, well made and very comfortable. Snug on the hips and thighs and voluminous from the knees down. I love the way the hems cover most of the shoe, other than a small portion of the toe box (I prefer extra long lengths on flared pant styles). To my eye this effect is ultra elegant. I’ll be wearing them with low pointy toe pumps so I need to have them hemmed (they run very long).
  • Mother Runway Skinny Flared Jeans: I almost bought these because the light blue colour of the denim is gorgeous. They are softer and lighter in weight than the J.Brand Love Story’s. But I didn’t like the way the hems draped over the shoes, thereby showcasing too much of the foot. The effect was less elegant than the wider flare, but it might be more to your taste.
  • Tommy Hilfiger Signature Logo Belt: The logo looks like a fun geometric pattern, and isn’t recognizable at all. It’s hard to find patterned belts in wide widths and this one fits the bill. My client bought the black and I bought the white.

I am enjoying Spring fashion more than Fall fashion, which is a first for me. I love the colours, the abundance of white,  the crispness of the fabrics, and the closed footwear choices.
