New: Create Your Own Custom Finds

Until now there have been two ways to collect Finds. The easiest is to click the little heart icon on the top right of a Find card. The second way is to use the bookmarklet to collect the item from a retailer’s website. While both of these are quick and easy, they exclude items that are no longer available online. Older items in your wardrobe perhaps, or items that you receive as gifts or purchase second-hand from a thrift store.

Note that you have to be a YLF member to use the Finds feature. If you would like to collect items, get price alerts and organize your wardrobe, please go here to sign up.

I found this limitation frustrating because I really wanted to capture my entire wardrobe in the Finds system. And our random outfit generator that was the source of much hilarity on April 1 turns out to be a good way to generate unexpected outfit combinations when you tell it to draw the items from your own wardrobe. Of course, this is much more useful if it knows about your entire wardrobe.

So today we have added the ability to create your own custom Finds from scratch.

It’s very easy to do. If you go to the “MINE” tab in the Finds section, where all your collected items are shown, you will see a new button near the top labelled “+ Custom Find” (if you are on a phone, the button will say “+ Custom”).

Custom Find Button

Clicking or tapping this button will take you to a form where you can upload a picture and specify the product name, brand and department. You can also add some notes if you like. Press “Submit” and Bob’s your uncle: the new item is added to your collection.

Custom Find Form

In most ways custom Finds behave in exactly the same way as other Finds. You can put them in folders, add them to collections, and attach them to forum posts. One difference with other Finds is that custom Finds can only be collected by their creators. If you look at the Find card for a custom Find created by someone else, you will see that there is no little heart icon on the top right. This gives the creator of each custom Find a little more control over the amount of exposure it gets.

Here is a collection of my coats, most of which were purchased long before YLF Finds existed (I’ve had some of them for a very long time). I took all of these photos with my iPhone 6 Plus. The backdrop is a just a spot on our off-white wall that was close to a window for natural light. I removed a picture we had hanging in that spot and used the hook for my clothes hanger. I used the photo edit feature of the iPhone Photos app to crop the pictures and adjust the colours.

It’s AMAZING to see all my coats on one page like this. I know exactly what I have at the press of a button, and I can add or subtract Finds as my coat capsule evolves. If you go to my wardrobe page you will see lots of new custom Finds and more will be appearing as I go through my wardrobe, category by category, adding all the items I couldn’t collect online.

Have fun adding your custom items. Please let us know in the technical support area of the forum if you run into any problems.

Rose Gold Fabness

A new outfit from Cynthia Yang of My Rose Colored Shades, who we introduced to YLF in March 2015.

Cynthia uses texture, pattern and shine to create a visually interesting casual Summer look. The self-colour geometric pattern of the eyelet top provides both pattern and texture. The pretty blush is low contrast against the white jeans, which lengthens the leg line. Cynthia’s streamlined sci-fi metallic loafers bring shine to the outfit. Crisp and modern. The rose gold bookends the blush top. Our blogger’s rose gold cut-out cuff bracelet both echoes the pattern in the top and the colour of the footwear. The angular lines of the cognac crossbody add a touch of polished strictness.

Outfit Formula: Fashionable Business Casual

Many of my clients have moved on from wearing classic bootcut trousers with a tucked blouse and blazer for business casual. Instead, they’ve been enjoying a more fashionable combination of cropped trousers, soft top and jacket. The components of the formula are ankle pants, a short drapey blouse, a non-blazer jacket, and ankle strap pumps

Apart from the Riley Tote, the items in this collection are the exact pieces that my client bought last week to create the look. We combined the Sloan-Fit Slim Ankle Pants in black with the Drapey Popover Blouse in navy. The blouse runs big, so size down. The blouse is boxy with theatrical kimono sleeves and would be somewhat overwhelming if it wasn’t shorter than regular length.

There is no need to semi tuck the front. Wear it out over slim-fit pants, which should be two to three inches above the ankle bone. Unfortunately the Banana Republic picture of the black version doesn’t show the correct length, but if you follow the link you can see the correct length in other colours. For example, here is the blue version on the right.

A non-blazer topper like a textured moto jacket, trapeze cut or a tuxedo silhouette is a great way to top off the look. But if the top and bottom are in sufficiently dressy fabrics, like the ones shown here, you’ll look pulled together without a topper.

Ankle pants with ankle strap pumps are a match made in heaven. My client liked the outfit best with the zebra skin Okala pumps, but on days when she wants to wear flats, the Cole Haan Skimmers in black are a good fallback option. We finished off the look with a large matte gold tote, a funky pendant necklace and gold stud earrings. My client looked stunning and was extremely pleased to be wearing something different to the traditional business casual ensemble.

Outfits based on this formula are comfortable and current. They surrender the waistline, but look “just tailored enough”, relaxing the business casual dress code with a fun dose of fashionable integrity. It’s also a great option when you’re sick of jeans, and want to look a tad dressier but feel just as comfortable.

Fab Find: Dressy Knitted Dress

A dressy knitted dress is a rare find and the Shirred Faux Wrap Dress from Banana Republic has been a HIT with my clients. There are many reasons to love this frock. The tailored and waist-defining fit is conventionally flattering, giving you an instant hourglass shape. The shirred side seams are forgiving on the midsection. It hugs the contours of your body but is not overly clingy. The curved high-low hemline is interesting. The side seams taper down to the hems providing extra structure. The flutter sleeves look fresh and modern, providing ample coverage for office settings (no topper required). The faux wrap front works well on a shorter neck. And the fabric is super soft making the frock very comfortable. It’s well made and the fabric is quite substantial.

It is available in colours as well as a striped pattern. Don’t purchase the petite unless you are very petite because it might run too short. It’s currently on sale, which makes the purchase even sweeter.
