Ensemble: The Gingham Top

Street Style InspirationThis ensemble was inspired by a street style outfit that made me fall in love with cognac footwear. I love the crisp integrity of the outfit despite the torn denim and earth tones. Gorgeous.

A gingham top is a classic. Much like a white or denim shirt, you can mould it into any style at all because it’s that versatile. A gingham top does NOT need to look preppy if you don’t want it to. Here are more looks with a gingham shirt that might inspire some of your own outfits.

I’ve used neutral gingham tops here, but feel free to use coloured gingham. There are four outfits, each with a different vibe to showcase the versatility of the gingham top. Here are the components:

Gingham top: Choose a gingham top in a silhouette that tickles your fancy. It can be a shirt, blouse, drape front top or shell top. Any style at all.

Bottoms: Choose bottoms to create the mood of the outfit. I chose white jeans to create a simple and crisp look. A pair of olive harem pants for a funky, casual vibe. A pair of blue denim flares for a boho lite look. And a patterned tube skirt for some ladylike pattern mixing. Perhaps you like the colour or pattern of these bottoms but wish to change the silhouette. Go for it. Of course, you could have matched any of these tops with a pair of black ankle pants or pencil skirt.

Footwear: Choose a pair of shoes that works with the outfit. I chose cognac ankle strap pumps for the crisp outfit, which creates a cohesive look with the cognac belt. A pair of unexpected cheetah flats for the harem pants. Either black pumps or wedged sandals for the boho lite look. And a chunky pair of white ‘90s platforms for the skirted look (although any of the other styles of shoe would work too).

Accessories: Finish off the outfit with a belt if you’re tucking or partially tucking the top. Choose a bag that works with the look. Add jewellery eyewear and watch as desired.

Ensemble: The Gingham Top

This is the outfit combination I wore last year. I used my cow print Okala pumps at the time because they have light cognac ankle straps. But this year, I can wear the same outfit with my new cognac ankle strap pumps.

Link Love: Summer Hats

Sporting a Summer hat is an easy way to make a style statement, and helps shield us from harmful UV rays.

Bucket hats are having their fashion moment, so Refinery29 rounded up 17 breezy Summer options.

From straw hats, and sassy fedoras to dramatic floppy hats, there are plenty of other options, of course. The Huffington Post lists 9 must-have Summer hats under $100.

If you’re not wearing a hat, but want to prevent sunburn on your scalp, then InStyle has some tips.

Travel Outfit: Flight 6032

Outfit 1 in the series on my travel capsule for a 4 week trip

I’m kicking off a series on the outfits from my travel capsule with the one I wore yesterday on our flight from Seattle to Amsterdam. We travel quite frequently so I’ve got my outfit formula for long flights down. Comfort is important, but so is feeling pulled together. I usually combine jeans with a camisole, comfy top, jacket, scarf and booties. The jeans are best with stretch and the top needs to be soft and cozy. The jacket must be crease-resistant, and the scarf is an insulating necessity (it can be freezing on flights). My handbag must be large and lightweight. The booties must be flat and comfortable. This outfit ticks all the boxes.

Five Reasons To Wear White Footwear

White shoes get a bad rap. Sometimes viewed as frumpy and jarringly bright, they are also less practical than darker colours. I won’t defend white shoes on the practicality front, but I will stick up for them in other respects. I think of white footwear as fashionable, crisp, modern and graphic.

White shoes are an important part of my personal style. Here are five reasons to love them.

Bookending

White footwear is an effective bookending tool for platinum blonde and very light grey hair. The repetition of a light colour at the top and bottom of your outfit creates a more cohesive whole. Whenever you are stuck on the question of what colour footwear to add to an outfit, try the colour that bookends your hair for a more pulled together look.

Visual Harmony

It’s easy to add white footwear to an outfit when you’re wearing a white top, topper or belt. Or when you’re wearing a pattern with white components, or a garment with white trim. The white shoes pick up the white in the rest of the outfit, creating a harmonious look.

Light-Coloured Outfits

If you tend to wear light neutrals and pastels, white shoes are one of the best ways to complement the colour palette. I’ve also found that white shoes are a great way to complement outfits with bright colours. In fact, when categorizing the colours of items, it’s often helpful to think of white as a bright.

White Bottoms

White footwear looks great with white jeans, cropped pants, shorts, skirts, dresses and trousers. It lengthens the leg line when worn with white bottoms.

Unexpected

Last but not least, white footwear often looks more unexpected because it’s still quite fringe. Most people prefer to wear dark colours on their feet because it’s practical, and because black footwear is also more widely available. The dress outfit below would have looked more predictable with black, brown or even metallic footwear. But the white styles it up a notch, especially with the colour repetition introduced by the addition of the white bag.

Party Look with Slogan Print Blouse

A new outfit from Annette Hoeldrich of Lady of Style, who we introduced to YLF in January 2015.

Annette wore this fun slogan print blouse to an informal Spring party. Opting for a graphic black and white print, and picking a top in a silky fabric amps up the dressy factor. Pairing the blouse with refined pieces in luxurious materials like the black classic tailored blazer and sleek, slim-fit faux leather trousers creates a sophisticated edge. Inside, Annette left off the blazer which showcases the top’s playful asymmetrical detailing. An eye-catching black and glass stone bracelet and chandelier earrings fit the vibe of this look perfectly. Ladylike strappy sandals, a small black clutch and our blogger’s polished make-up and ‘do finish off the outfit.
