Charming Modern Retro Dress Style

We thought if would be fun to check back in with freelance artist Veronica Popoiacu (34) from Bittersweet Colours to see what she has been up to stylewise. Turns out she is loving dresses at the moment, so we decided to do a dress feature. Pennsylvania-based Veronica’s style is Modern Retro, very pretty, feminine and polished. Our 5’5″ blogger has an excellent eye for proportions, and is always up for trying new silhouettes. Unexpected, daring colour combos and advanced pattern mixing are her trademarks, and her shoe and bag game is on point. Since we first featured her, Veronica has become a Mum, and her style has taken a more singular direction:

“My style has changed drastically, but this change happened before I became a mum, about a year earlier. If previously I was oscillating between femininity — the old classic style (where pretty dresses & high heels were involved) — and a more minimalist and modern look (with clean lines, sometimes oversized pieces), NOW I’m just on one line: pure femininity! It took me some time to find out who I am in terms of style, but I realized that my heart skips a beat when I see a full-skirt midi dress. I had to look closely at what makes me feel confident, comfortable and is still me at the same time, and now I know. If I have to mention one thing that has changed since Noah’s birth, it’s that I don’t wear high heels as often as before. I pretty much prefer mid and low heel pumps, flats and sneakers (I’ve discovered how great the last two styles work with my feminine dresses, a pretty big surprise for me).”

This is a great example of the types of elegant dresses Veronica likes to sport these days. The frock is custom-made and fits her perfectly. The eye-catching print on this full-skirted dress with elegant boat neckline reminds me of Delft pottery. The fitted sleeves create structure, while the self-belt emphasizes our blogger’s slim waist. Mid-heel pointy toe pumps elongate the leg line. The pink suede makes the blue in her dress look even more vibrant. The green, yellow and pink print on the tasseled satchel picks up the colour of the shoes, and adds romantic flair.

Unexpected, bold colour combos continue to be Veronica’s strong suit. The rust paired with emerald green, mid-brown and bright blues packs a serious punch. Veronica’s sleeveless, fitted mini dress with dropped waist and front pockets is delightfully ‘60s. Pairing the sueded frock with a quirky patterned pussy bow blouse only adds to the sassy retro vibe. The knee-high brown boots hug the leg closely for a flattering fit. The suede adds further textural interest. So does the stunning green coat with oversized rounded collar and large buttons. Veronica’s leather shopper in vibrant metallic blues, and black cat eye sunnies finish off the look.

Pattern mixing expert Veronica is sporting a Diane von Furstenberg-inspired vintage dress with black and white pointy toe pumps. The zipper neckline on the dress is a fun design detail. Going with two graphic patterns, and choosing patterns in a similar colour palette creates style cohesiveness. The brown leather obi belt and wide Chanel cuff bracelet add soft edge to the feminine frock. Our blogger’s colour blocked bag cleverly echoes the colours of the belt and the dress. Veronica’s dark locks complement this outfit perfectly.

Here are Veronica’s thoughts and tips on finding one-of-a-kind dresses:

“Let’s start by mentioning that these days it is pretty hard to have a distinctive look and I will give you a basic example. When a big brand launches a stunning design, all the (more affordable) fashion retailers reproduce that piece and then you can see a uniform on the streets, all the girls have ‘that dress’. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you are like me and want something a little bit different, then go browse the vintage shops in person or Etsy.com if you are an online shopper. Of course, there are other ways to acquire rare pieces: estate sales, vintage auctions etc. This is what I do, and I love my collection of vintage dresses, coats, bags and jewelry. Not to mention that the quality is great if you are lucky to find THE piece in great condition. Another way, which I prefer from time to time, is to custom make my dresses ( I love to live in dresses). Luckily, these days you can find online shops that customize your garments.”

Pairing a white minidress with sweet ballerina kitty flats emphasizes the girly vibe of this outfit. The short smock dress showcases Veronica’s shapely gams. The loose fit is tempered by the gathering at the chest, the high neckline, and the turned up scrunched sleeves. Large gold and black drop earrings, that echo the gold detail on the shoes, add a glamorous boho touch. Putting up her hair in a ponytail and sporting a wicker bag — a reproduction of a classic Japanese picnic bag — gives this look a relaxed Summer feel.

This classic ladylike look brilliantly illustrates that Veronica is on a huge retro kick. This little fit-and-flare number in pretty pinks, reds and oranges is another vintage find. The paisley print, midi length, pussy bow neckline, self-belt, and pleated skirt scream ‘70s elegance. The top knot creates elegant strictness that works well with the high neckline. Pairing it with pale pink d’Orsay pumps lets the dress do all the talking. But leave it to Veronica to come up with a way to add a big dose of modern to the outfit with a statement bag. The suede colour block satchel in yellow, grey and black is unexpected without feeling jarring. Big round sunnies and soft pink lipstick complete the look.

Marigold and pink make for another unusual and striking colour combination. Veronica is wearing a long-sleeved pink shift dress with dropped waist and stand-up collar. It’s interesting how she chose to layer a scarf over the high neckline. The top knot keeps her hair from interfering with the lines of the outfit. The above-the-knee frock and pale pink pointy toe pumps create a long leg line. Tying the Hermès scarf in a big bow adds tons of retro charm. The texture-rich mango coat matches the yellow in the scarf perfectly. The colour block tote with architectural lines, another stunner from Veronica’s enviable bag collection, complements this Jackie O-esque outfit to perfection.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Veronica’s fabulous Modern Retro dress looks. Let us know in the comments, and then hop on over to Bittersweet Colours to browse the rest of her outfits. Or find more visual inspiration on her pinboards.

Four Ways to Wear the Simple Maxi Cardigan

Maxi or knee-length cardigans, in black, grey or burgundy, are unexpected winners at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. The silhouettes are straight and simple, which means no fussy waterfall collars, A-line flares, ties around the waist, round-bottomed hems, or cocoon-shaped torsos. The maxi cardigans are fluid on the waist, and streamlined on the hips and legs.

Here are some good examples:

The item is popular among my clients because it’s a practical, versatile, slimming, camouflaging, comfortable and a fairly dramatic addition to an outfit. Here are the top four ways we have been styling them.

Over a Sleeveless Dress

The maxi cardigan became a fast favourite to wear over sleeveless dresses as a way to cover up arm exposure, AND add layering interest to an outfit. It’s also a great way to add warmth in cold air conditioning during the Summer months. Wearing a sleek long cardigan over a tailored or body-con sheath dress is a logical pairing because the silhouettes are similar. But the straight maxi cardigan looked as good worn over a flared dress. More unexpected and fashion-forward.

Over a Sleeveless Dress

Over a Pencil Skirt

Layering a maxi cardigan over a pencil skirt and top has the same effect as layering it over a sheath dress. You can create a high contrast between the top and skirt like the picture shows, if that’s more to your taste.

Over a Pencil Skirt

With a Tunic & Leggings

The ease and comfort make this combination an instant hit with those who stay or work at home. The picture below doesn’t quite reflect the outfits I’ve been putting together with clients because the top is short and the footwear is dressy. Instead, combine an interesting asymmetrical tunic with the cardi, and think chunky loafers, slip-on sneakers, flat oxfords or pointy-toe flats for footwear.

With a Tunic & Leggings

With Flared Crops & Top

This was my favourite combination because it was the least expected and most fashionable. It’s counter-intuitive to wear a long top over flared/straight cropped pants or jeans, but it looks fresh and fun. As long as the lengths of the items are right, and the style of the footwear complements the bottoms — you’re in business. The top on the model below is short, but feel free to substitute it with a tunic, either with a straight or an asymmetrical hem.

With Flared Crops & Top

Cardigans are not my thing, but I love these combinations on others. What I like most of all is how happy the outfit formulas have made my clients. The drape and swoosh of an unbuttoned, simple maxi cardigan has a graceful and soft integrity that is quite powerful.

Prevent Thigh Rub with Slip Shorts

Thigh rub and chafing can happen when you wear skirts and dresses. It’s particularly uncomfortable in the Summer because of heat and perspiration. Some stick to wearing shorts, pants and jeans to avoid the rubbing. But the right foundation garments can have the same effect, and allow you to wear skirts and dresses comfortably.

Skimmer boyshorts underwear effectively prevent your inner thighs from rubbing together. They’re like wearing a slip with legs, hence the description, “slip shorts”. Under flared skirts they have the additional advantage of some extra coverage if a breeze lifts your skirt.

Slip shorts are NOT an item of shapewear. The idea is to wear them very comfortably like a regular pair of knickers, so size up appropriately to ensure that you don’t feel constricted.

Slip shorts are available in a variety of colours, so take your pick. The examples shown in the collection come highly recommended by my clients.

Top Picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has officially begun. After a week of early access to cardholders, it is now open to all. Brand new merchandise for Fall and Winter will be discounted for two weeks only. Prices go back up on August 8.

I spent a week preselecting the sale with clients and it was FABULOUS. We refreshed our Fall and Winter wardrobes while laughing up a storm. Along the way I noted the top items I saw, and just posted five lists that might be helpful if you are navigating the sale:

I’ve seen all of these items in person and on a range of body types and sizes, across petite, regular and tall women. You’ll see a wide assortment of items here, reflecting the range of lifestyles, style preferences and budgets across my clientele.

A few things to consider as you browse the lists:

  • I have collected a particular colour in each item, but be sure to browse through the other colour options too.
  • Check whether the items are available in petite and plus because I have only provided the description in regular sizes. Nordstrom’s in-house brands usually provide petite and plus sizing.
  • My descriptions are detailed and specific for a reason. They suggest a match for a particular body type, comfort level or style preference.
  • Items do come back into stock throughout the fortnight of the sale, so be tenacious and keep on checking back on the items that tickle your fancy.
  • Some of the collected items do not show the “Sale” sticker, but the items ARE on sale.
  • At the end of each list there is also a link to the relevant collection page where you can see the items together with their descriptions.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments sections about my picks or any other NAS items, and I’ll do my best to help you out. And please share your own winning purchases in the comments sections too.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Skirts, Pants & Jeans

Finally, here are my top picks for all sorts of bottoms. Jeans were particularly good at the sale and there are some trouser gems too. The best skirts were straight and tapered, which is a pity because I adore flared skirts. I warned my clientele against leather skirts because they crease terribly at the back after sitting in them for a while, and you can’t iron the leather.

It has been a ten day marathon working the NAS, but I’m in my element and enjoy every minute. It’s my busiest time of the year and I absolutely thrive on it. My clients are wonderful, and our forum members have been excited, supportive and very helpful. I haven’t covered lingerie, activewear, menswear, home wear and children’s wear in my lists, but do check out those areas too.

Remember that items DO come back into stock throughout the fortnight of the sale so keep checking back on the items that tickle your fancy. Good hunting!

Skirts

  • Leith Floral Stretch Knit Pencil Skirt: Best affordable skirt at the sale. Excellent fit, great fabric, cute pattern, elegant length, versatile, easy to launder, comfortable and crease-resistant. Slimming. I WISH they had offered this in a wider assortment of sizes.
  • Classiques Entier Jacquard Front Pencil Skirt: A classic beauty that works marvelously well with the matching jacket for a business formal look. Good on an hourglass and slight pear shaped body type. Fabulous quality.
  • Halogen Asymmetrical Zip Pencil Skirt (Regular & Petite): Clients either loved or intensely disliked this style. When it fits, it's killer. Very affordable. It runs small so size up. Works well on a long torso and curvy figure. Not as good on narrow hips and a wider waist. Stay away if you are apple shaped. Great length and easy to style with a black support act.
  • Hinge Denim Pencil Skirt (Rain Dusk Vintage): Best denim skirt at the NAS. GREAT length and fit. Tapers back to the knee, and has worked on many body types. The front slit is surprisingly subtle, so don't worry about it. Runs at least a size big. You need to wear it a little lower on the hips, so pull it down.
  • Lafayette 148 New York 'Revelin' Tweed Pencil Skirt (Regular & Petite): Modern Classic Fabness. Ultra polished and beautifully made. Gorgeous fabric that does not crease. Good on a curvy hourglass.
  • MELISSA MCCARTHY SEVEN7 Digital Print Ponte Pencil Skirt (Plus Size): A great tube skirt with plenty of length. Fun pattern and easily paired with a black top. Streamlined and forgiving.
  • Boss 'Vulara' Stretch Wool Blend Suit Skirt: The fabric and colour are sublime. Very lightweight with good drape. It has a matching blazer for a formal suited look. Good on many body types.
  • BP Rib Knit Pencil Skirt: An easy textured tube skirt that also comes in a two-toned grey and black. Super fabric and affordable price. Plenty of length for tall gals. Runs small.
  • Vince Camuto Ponte Midi Skirt (Online Only): A wonderful basic back knitted skirt with LENGTH. Weighty fabric, and quite forgiving of belly bulges. Great fit because it tapers back onto the waist. Works on many body types. Good price. Dress it up or down.

See the items alongside my descriptions on the collection page.

Pants

  • Halogen Kick Flare Knit Ankle Pants (Regular & Petite): Best cropped flares at the sale and affordable too. Very substantial fabric, and wonderfully dressy. They have worked on every body type from super straight to very curvy, and from a size 2 to a size 16. A genius cut. They mould to your body but do not look like a "sausage casing" either. Easy to shorten for petites.
  • MAX MARA 'Pegno' Jersey Crop Pants: Incredibly comfortable stretchy cropped pants that work well on a straighter hourglass. Good on tall gals. It has a matching long blazer that looks incredible when worn as a suit. The grey is slightly textured. Very luxurious.
  • Classiques Entier Leather Trim Flare Leg Pants (Regular & Petite): Best bootcut trousers of them all. They are relatively slim on the legs and flare out at the hem with magnificent drape. Luxe and chic. Glorious in motion. Works on many body types. Petites looked amazing in the petite sizes. Stunning fabric and beautiful quality.
  • Jen7 Stretch Sateen Slim Straight Leg Pants: Wonderful sueded casual pants. The green is as fab as the burgundy. They work extremely well on a curvy figure, and might run a size big. They have plenty of room on the calves if you have wider calves. They also cuff well into cropped pants with a wide cuff.
  • 3.1 Phillip Lim Pleated Glen Plaid Crop Wool Pants: Modern Retro Fabness. These ultra trendy trousers are an acquired taste. They bring back the '80s in a wonderful way, although the fabric is very '40s. You have to wear them with a tucked top to showcase the buckle detailing, otherwise what's the point? Works well on a curvy figure with a defined waist, or a more rectangular figure with a defined waist. They pouf out when you sit, so you have to be okay with that. Exquisite quality and very comfy.
  • Joie 'Bardot' Crop Flare Leg Pants: Glorious fabric and dressier than jeans. The flares are quite dramatic so consider yourself warned. They also have a very high rise. Worked on many body types. Good on curvy bodies too.
  • Lyssé High Waist Faux Leather Leggings: Machine washable pleather leggings that do NOT create muffin top. The knees might bag out a little. Can be shortened for petites. Read the rave reviews.
  • Spanx Faux Leather Leggings: Best leggings at the sale. Super Hero Liquid Mercury Fabness. It makes everything look more modern. Fabulous under dresses, skirts and tunics. Great tummy control too. They are hard to get on, but worth the effort.
  • Eileen Fisher Crop Wide Leg Trousers (Regular & Petite): Smart casual comfy knitted culottes. They look relaxed rather than crisp. Fab with a shorter sweater. Works on many body types and size down.
